From the AP, 6/6/05:

Cheshire is growing again with annexation of township

6/6/2005, 6:54 a.m. ET

The Associated Press

CHESHIRE, Ohio (AP) — Three years ago, this Ohio River village nearly vanished after American Electric Power bought out most of the residents and bulldozed their homes.

But Cheshire is on the way back, now that Gallia County commissioners have approved annexing 394 acres of neighboring Cheshire Township.

That will bring in about 120 residents to join the 21 who remained after AEP bought out most of their neighbors, often for three times or more than what their property was worth.

a year or two ago, when all this stuff was going on, the dispatch did a huge series of articles about this. quite good, i thought.

anyone who has gone by there can see how polluted the place is. 'tis unfortunate

I remembered seeing a piece on it somewhere on TV, which is what brought it to my attention.

Maybe I can try to find some articles on it.

After a 4 second Google search, I found a couple of sites that are pretty interesting:

1) Forgotten Ohio: Cheshire

The synopsis of the story and phots.  There are also a couple of links to news stories at the bottom.

2) Columbus Dispatch: Cheshire photo gallery

Small "photodocumentary" with 8 photos from Doral Chenoweth III.  No, you don't have to pay to see them.

3) Brad Farwell: Cheshire, OH

A few black-and-whites from a professional photographer taken in 2002.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When Daniel Paul Stinson looks out his back door, he sees nothing but the Gen. James M. Gavin power plant.

The plant’s owner, American Electric Power, bought out almost all his neighbors in Cheshire four years ago. Nearly everyone in the village of 221 took AEP’s money, signed away their rights to sue the company for health problems and moved.

The utility bulldozed their homes, but about 20 residents who took the deal and stayed can remain in their homes as long as they like, Stinson said. AEP will take their homes when they leave.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A settlement could be near in a pollution trial that pits American Electric Power against people who live in and near Cheshire.

Attorneys for both sides notified U.S. District Judge Gregory L. Frost yesterday that they had reached general agreements but would need about two weeks to have their technical staffs review and sign off on them.

Should a deal fall through, the trial is to resume. Neither side would comment yesterday.
