Posted March 5, 200817 yr North Hill Highland Square (I was a little disappointed in the commerial district, honestly, but the residential areas are spectacular) Middlebury Goodyear Heights Odd little neighborhood square-ish area Nothing is quite like trash day in Akron
March 5, 200817 yr Disappointed in Highland Square's commercial district? I thought there was a pretty interesting mix of businesses there... Square Records, Aladdin's, Angel Falls Coffee, etc.
March 5, 200817 yr Highland Square (I was a little disappointed in the commerial district, honestly, but the residential areas are spectacular) I totally agree. I expected Oregon District or Coventry. Though I do like the residential, as you pointed out. Akron is probably my favorite city in northern Ohio, as it is so damn comfortable and the topography sells it. March 5, 200817 yr And here I thought the Oregon District was lacking the last time I visited (good number of "for rent" signs). Nice to see some Akron hoods.
March 5, 200817 yr Nice job! Akron neighborhood pics were a needed addition to the site. Highland Square has always been a cool neighborhood, but the commercial strip is just not dense enough. I know that most were not happy with the recent redevelopment of certain parcels...probably that boring set back building with Chipotle in it. March 5, 200817 yr Got to love mary coyle's... I remember when I use to go and get the RCC shirts in highland square.. I'd stop in for ice cream..
March 5, 200817 yr I think the fact that it appears to be a cold winter day, was part of the reason for the absence of activity. And there have been a couple business that have moved out, I heard. The neighborhood has always survived and I'm sure it will this time, as well.
March 6, 200817 yr ^Market path is a non-profit retailer of handmade mainly decorative goods from Third World countries. I've never heard of "Middlebury" in Akron. I'll have to look that up. That's usually called East Akron.. I frequent Highland Square mainly at night and with the 4-5 bars that are there it has a lot more pedestrian traffic. I don't check out the residential too much. So that was pretty cool seeing those pics and a good find on Dopler St. I had to google blue sky gallery to find that. Never knew there were businesses over there. Highland Square is still in the middle of a long transition It lost its main diner, grocery store, Mexican restaurant, and several other establishments for a variety of reasons. Because of the density of the area, new stores/restaurants will come back and replace those its just a matter of when. Then people can start b!tching about lack of parking again. Thats when you'll know Highland Square is back to normal.
March 6, 200817 yr Highland is a pretty good neighborhood business district, but the way it has been discussed, I was expecting more of city business district--something of a much larger draw. The businesses that are there are probably unique and fun, so that is a plus. Really, however, my main disappointment was to the built environment. The "older" side is a couple one and two story nondescript buildings while the "new" side is a strip mall with the building at the street and parking moved to the side, but still visible. The theater is nice, but it has been mucked up a bit. Both sides are pedestrian friendly, but don't try to cross Market.
March 6, 200817 yr I've never heard of "Middlebury" in Akron. I'll have to look that up. That's usually called East Akron.. East Akron is technically a separate neighborhood. Information on Middlebury can be found here: http://ci.akron.oh.us/planning/cp/neighborhoods/Middlebury.pdf
March 6, 200817 yr Market Path is a fair-trade store along the lines of Ten Thousand Villages http://www.themarketpath.com/fair_trade_faqs.html The commercial strip of Highland Square used to extend further east along Market - there used to be a lot of antique shops which 1. made for a longer stroll/district 2. added to the eclectic mix. I think if it was located closer to the university, it would be more built-up and have more pedestrian traffic. For comparison's sake, here are some same-scale overheads of Coventry and Highland Square: Note the HUGE amount of apartment buildings west of Coventry's commercial strip: Note the lack of dense residential areas like Coventry. The blue area is where the antique shops used to be: Great set, ink! :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 7, 200817 yr Excellent Job and I live just east of Highland Square and I'm disappointed with what's gone on with the retail also. It's still a great neighborhood though.
March 7, 200817 yr Has anyone considered taking some pictures around Five Corners and The Wahaven Area? There are some great neighborhoods north and south of West Market St., from Highland Square, toward the west, all the way out toward Fairlawn.
October 4, 200816 yr This building was a meeting place for cubscouts back in the 1970s. It had a large hall and a kitchen. Probably dates back to the 1920s or earlier.
October 4, 200816 yr I've never heard of "Middlebury" in Akron. I'll have to look that up. That's usually called East Akron.. East Akron is technically a separate neighborhood. Information on Middlebury can be found here: http://ci.akron.oh.us/planning/cp/neighborhoods/Middlebury.pdf Middlebury is the area where Akron was founded. In the Case street/ Arlington/Exchange area. I had a girlfriend who lived in the area, on Bank st. So called because it was next to the bank of the Little Cuyagoga river, which runs through the neighborhood. I remember the river smelled like chemicals back then.
October 4, 200816 yr Highland Square was my fave out of the set. Although the name Goodyear Heights makes me chuckle.

October 4, 200816 yr Airport pics: This used to be an airport terminal/control building. Now its a restaurant: Airdock:
October 26, 200816 yr More pics of the airdock: Can you imagine the day they flew the Akron out of its hanger, driving to the airport in your Model-T, to witness the event? A more modern pic showing the immensity of the building:
November 9, 200816 yr Anyone who has never been up close to that airdock, has no idea how huge it is. It is the largest building in the entire world, without interior supports. It looks like it could just cave in at any minute. It is so big, it has it's own atmosphere and clouds form and it rains inside. I forgot how many football fields would fit in side. I use to know. Definitely more than one.
November 9, 200816 yr No, it WAS the largest building without interior supports at one time. Also, it doesn't rain inside - when the humidity is high, condensation forms on the upper part of the interior - if there's enough, the condensation drips. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
