Ontario-Superior intersection caves in downtown

A water line break downtown caused the intersection of Ontario and Superior avenues to collapse about 7:45 this morning.

Jackie Johnson, 57, was watching water crews try to locate a shut-off valve when the pavement went "faloomp," she said. "Like wow."

Police have closed much of Public Square. Ontario is closed between Euclid and St. Clair avenues.

It was a real mess getting across the square, especially for people who refuse to dress for the weather and still wear dress shoes or whatever instead of boots.

wow.  Public Square collapses (any pics??  hint..hint) and a bomb goes off on Times Square.  What a way to start off rush hour, in two busy employment centers.

Low quality, but hopefully it comes out.

I have a great view from my office, but no camera.

I might be able to get some later depending no how my day goes.

Wow!!!.  thanks for the pics.  I miss working on PS

Perhaps the work of public square quadrant unification guerrillas?

lol...man would I love to see the entire square green  and people forced to drive the around to each of the ave's....wishful thinking

Yes, we demand a swimming pool in PS

very disconcerting.  makes you wonder about the structural integrity of other parts of the city's water system.

It's the first venue for the Senior Citizens games!  LMAO!!

Its the future home of the Cleveland International Natatorium and Aquatic Center on historic Public Square!

Every city has old water pipes. Every City has these problems.

But these are new pipes.  They were put in as part of the EC project, from what I read.

seriously dude relax, not every perceived negative comment is a blatant attack on the city.

Fox 8 said this morning (on air), they previously thought it was new pipes, but now they believe they are older ones.

Are you sure, I thought the utilites (etc.) work started at East 2nd then continued east on Euclid. :?  Where did you get your information?

Someone has a persecution complex - how else should someone read your comment?

Where did you read this?

I heard it on the radio this morning.  I'll see if I can find anything online that disproves or supports it, hang on.

Edited to add: Humph, WKYC says they are 150 year old pipes.  Also, the water is flushing yellow in our toilets now at Key Center and there's still no boil alert.  I think I won't be drinking the water here today.

Here it is.  Not sure how credible.  From fox8cleveland's site:

"An official with the city tells Fox 8 News that the water lines in that area are almost all new, having been put in last year as part of the Euclid Corridor Project. The spokesperson believes that the water main break was likely an unavoidable "act of nature" that occurred because of the ice and freezing temperatures."

i really don't care how you read into it....

you are kidding yourself if you don't think city officials aren't posing the same question I posed earlier

the hole is growing!

Or the photo is just bigger.

From another angle and a little closer...

War of the Worlds? :-D

War of the Worlds? :-D

LOL .. I was thinking that.

Or a fucking dinosaur stomped through. One that could hop on one leg. REALLLY far.

I was just out there taking some photos.  That hole is massive in person

Cool shot.  That's a good pretty picture of just how much car-dominated concrete there is at the center of Public Square.

Any reports of injuries from this thing?

wonder how all those fiber optic cables are holdin' up  :-o

aren't those under Euclid, not Superior?

God is telling us to make PS more ped friendly!!!!

On a side note, does anyone think it's physically possible to move the Soldiers and Sailors Monument if the case presented itself?

No, i don't think its possible. Why do it? You could still consolidate the 4 squares and leave the monument where it is.

the actual word is in... channel 5 news just stated that this waterline was installed in 1880.  It was 128 years old. And judging from the footage i just saw, it looked every bit of it.  They have also now had to turn off a gas main that goes right next to it until everything is cleared.  Also flooding has been reported in the basements of Tower City, the Park Building, and 75 public square.

Based on the manpower/equipment AT&T had down at the other Superior (17th-21st) cave in, there's something under that street...

I would love to see the roads removed and all 4 squares left as is, and make the areas in between landscaped walks with benches and some greenspace...and maybe put something in the middle where the paths meet.

I agree!  If not at least do it like shaker square.

I think the problem is superior?  It can't be removed, because it's a federal route, no?

So is Ontario in the southern quadrant (US 422).

EDIT: OK that made no sense, there can't be a "southern quadrant".  I meant "from the south to Superior".

EDIT-EDIT: And so my brain is really farting today, and I can't even type the edit in the correct box, sorry.  I'll just stop posting now.

I feel like this is the official excuse for everything these days (not blaming you MTS, it's the excuse from "the powers that be").

4 US routes intersect at PS; 422, 322, 20, and 6.

MayDay....I think you can get closer!  LOL  I'm surprised you didn't kick Jack out of your pic.

These apply only within the square (and I'm including only US routes):

Ontario from north - no US routes

Ontario from south - US 422

Superior from east - US 322, US 20, US 6

Superior from west - US 20, US 6

I don't like that the US routes are a problem...if they don't want them going around the square, then lets:

Route US 20 and US 6 up E. 9th to the shoreway (where they end up anyways west of W. 25th St.).

Terminate US 322 at E. 9th St.

Run US 422 up E. 9th St. and terminate it at the Superior/E. 9th St. intersection.

I'm sure it'd be easy to convince ODOT of this, right? :)

Did you see the part about one of the concrete slabs resting on a gas line? Yeah, I'm all for getting a good photo but I have a party to go to tonight.

Go for it!  They shut off the gas line!  The pope can be an admin if something happens to you! :-P

That's amazing (and great) that noone was injured.

why is jack marshall always dressed like it's 30 below zero?

True, but the pope isn't suited for other roles I fulfill, i.e. being a PITA to my partner, etc. ;-)

man.....ummmmmm
