With more than a foot of snow in much of Ohio, I thought it was appropriate to post Ohio's best college town on a hot September Saturday.

Nice job.

Great lookin' town!

I love downtown Athens and the campus, and the vibrancy of the downtown -- it's something you wouldn't expect in the state's poorest county. The county really needs to embrace tourism -- especially those that appeal to college students -- and really take advantage of the natural beauty.

I have lots of friends from Athens, so it's amazing that I've never even been there. Judging by the pics, I am missing out on a great weekend trip! I will have to make the drive down there this summer.

As always, great pics, Ink!

I've always thought that Athens County should copy whatever Albemarle County, VA. did to get all those rich people to move there, unless that means sprawling up the place.

I too, have not made it to Athens yet. It sure looks nice and it is the capital of Ohio's Appalachian Territory.

Ahhhh, Love the 'Harvard on the Hocking!!!!!!!!'  :drunk:

Great Pic's Ink!!

It's just shocking to me how much that place has changed in the 9 years (holy sh*t, 9 years ) since I graduated. Sigh.  And if anyone is going to the MAC tournament in Cleveland to watch the bobcats take on Miami this Thursday... The Clevelander (right down the street from the Q) might be owned by a group of Bobcats. :drunk:

Athens... spent a month there one night.

Love love love Athens.

^^Is that a recycled comment?  8-)

Have never been there, but sure looks inviting.  And busy.

Ohio's best college town

But, this isn't Columbus.

BEST FIVE YEARS OF MY LIFE!  God I miss that place sooo much!  Thank you for posting that.

My sister is going to OU........and Athens is definitely somewhere I would love to check out!!! Great pix!

how can a street in the poorest county in ohio have the highest rent per square foot?

i hope i am never able to identify the best years of my life, because once you do, it is all downhill... until you die

I've got a caption for almost every photo on this thread.

I made a few appearances here in Judge Grimm's courtroom, over $300 in fines:

Ah yes, Casa.  Where my friend's band was playing one night and some dude went up and kicked the lead singer in the mouth on stage:

A dude I really didn't like used to get his hair done at Attractions:

Ah yes, The Blue Gator, formerly The Greenery, home of $2 pitcher night.  I remember one time I was up there with about 5 people and I went up and got 2 more pitchers, got back and it was just me and Chris.  We had another pitcher each and then I made out with a fat chick.  Also, the Blue Gator is where 2 Live Crew played in 2004, I've a story for that night too that's not going to be repeated here in its entirety.  It was when I was living in a basement apartment, and I invited the whole place back to my place, but my apartment had flooded and the carpet squished with every step.

Ah yes, The Crystal.  One time I was behind some dude in line to get in who got called out on his fake ID.  I laughed at him.  He was a foot taller than me and choked me.

I knew a girl who lived in those apartments on the left...they were the most expensive in town.  She had original art and nice furniture.  It was there where I first heard the phrase "Old-school J-Lo".

Ah yes, The Union, where I've spent several hundred nights of my life.  Too many stories from this place to recall.  I remember I almost got in a fight the very first night I went there, a guy tripped me on purpose after I heckled the band.  Another time Holly Golightly was performing and about 10 seconds into her show I yelled "Quenton Terrentino /RUUULES/!" and I got kicked out.  I got kicked out again last fall.

My friend used to live in the building on the left, in the little apartment that was up in the attic.  I remember how funny that little semi-circle window was from the inside, it was below the level of the furniture.  When the weather got nice we'd spend Friday afternoons on that balcony playing music, sipping a few beers, and directing young ladies passing on the sidewalk to the staircase.  Those *were* the days!

After Halloween 2 years a go, i ended up passing out on the courthouse steps in my full Halloween gear. I must have looked like such a bum, passing out at 10:00am after a full night of parties.

College towns are for chumps.

JMeck. you are definitely one of my favorite Urbanohio posters. Thanks for the travelogue.

^^I take it you prefer Stryker.

Who knew he was in Ohio? Athens is no match for sure.

I've ot another story, I just remembered it randomly this week.

This one day I was looking for apartments for the fall.  I walk over to a place with a sign on it and randomly one of my friends named Brad was there hanging out with the people.  After seeing the place I invite myself to the party and after returning from the Stimson BP split an 18-pack of Keystone with Brad while listening to the first three Stooges records in chronological order, getting hyped up for the evening's live music.

We go to some party after the show then come back down Mill St. to the apartment where I was subleasing and set up some lawn chairs on the porch and proceed to listen to the Stooges records again.  It was summer and I had my stereo on full blast at 3am.  At some point he steps inside to grab some more beers and two girls come walking down the sidewalk and ask if we're having a party.  These were some Court St. party girls with big teased-up hair, little purses, and walked in tight hurried steps.  The music was self-evident and I say yeah, we've got some beer.

I was subleasing this place and had NO furniture, I mean none.  I had a desk chair and one cheap plastic lawn chair.  No couches, no nothing.  Nothing on the walls.  I wave them inside to prove to them I have no furniture (because if they sat down on the porch I'd have to stand and I didn't feel like standing) and where's Brad?  He's in the damn bathroom making a big stink.  I knock on the door and say "Hey Brad we've got some visitors".  He goes "I'll be out in a second".  I turn to the fridge to hand the ladies some beer and we only have about three left.  Just then the smell from the bathroom comes over to the kitchen.  The ladies look at each other and go "well we're going to get out of here then" and they slip into the night.

Brad comes out and I tell him "I swear, there were just some girls here!" and he's like "whatever".  He still doesn't believe those girls really just appeared out of nowhere and were actually in the apartment!
