March 9, 200817 yr How did Crystal City end up in a thread about DC Monuments? So yes, the Department of the Treasury is the building that is immediately to the east of the White House. The statue in the plaza out front is of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson and Madison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Gallatin The building immediately to the west of the White House is the Old Executive Office Building, which used to house the State, War and Navy Departments (I think Navy was included). Anyway, War and Navy moved to the Pentagon, and General Marshall, when he was Secretary of State under Truman, moved State to new offices in Foggy Bottom, which is why State is occasionally referred to as Foggy Bottom, like the Department of Defense is referred to as the Pentagon, or the French Foreign Affairs Ministry is referred to as Quai d'Orsay. They recently named the Old Executive Office building after Eisenhower for some reason, even though he never had anything to do with the building: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Executive_Office_Building
