I was accepted at ND and turned it down to go to UC.  Brian Kelly can do the same.

Keep on battling Bearcats, only bright spot in the sh*tty Cincinnati athletic scene

You can't blame a man for following his lifelong dream.  That being said, a man with real character would say to himself, "This is where I belong for now, these are the players that I kept telling we were a family, this is where I am staying."

One day down the road, the opportunity may present itself again, possibly in a different situation where his departure might not matter as much.

Reminds me of a certain UC basketball coach whose lifelong dream was to coach at his alma mater, West Virginia.  When first presented to him, he turned it down to stay at UC to finish what he started.

To me, it's a risk/reward analysis for Kelly.  Going to ND, he will either make himself a God or completely ruin his promising career.  I think some of the younger forumers don't quite know what it is like with ND on top and the Domer Nation walking around with their chest out.  Not sure about Cincy, but up here around the Great Lakes, it can get quite annoying.  And it is hardly just the alumni and students, it is every Irish-Catholic household.  If he returns ND to glory, he will be set for life.  If he fails, well... look at how far Charlie Weis has fallen.

Weis is going to become the offensive coordinator somewhere in the NFL and make more millions of dollars.  Probably be the highest paid assistant in the league.  I don't think he's fallen that far.

Who do you think you are coming on this board talking about some bs. All the UC fans are not on this board. Who said BK shouldn't go because he has a UC contract? Show me that post.

What are you talking about? i understand you may be emotional about this, but you're not making a lot of sense.

I'm seeing posts on this very page that are saying that the NCAA letting coaches be hired before the bowl games is a joke.

Do you think it is outside the control of the NCAA to set standards for the hiring of coaches?

yes.  The NCAA does not have the ability to tell Universities how to handle employment issues.

Well, you are wrong.  They can certainly control whether or not coaches under contract can interview during the season.  They can also control signing dates, and make new recruiting limitations to prevent the need for coaches to start during the bowl season.  Actually they control the entire process.

Nice! Bearcat win + New Orleans + New Years = big ticket sales.

UC sells out bowl tickets

Enquirer staff report • December 10, 2009

The University of Cincinnati has sold out its allotment of 17,500 Sugar Bowl tickets. Mike Waddell, UC’s senior associate athletic director for external relations, made the announcement on his Twitter feed this morning.

Got my ticket.  Should be a blast.

recruiting? yes. signing dates? yes.

could they implement sanctions on schools interviewing coaches that are under contract? maybe...but even if they could, they wouldn't. it's not in their interest. There is too much money to be made.

Thinking about this more...i don't think the NCAA can put that restriction out there.  I think the NFL could because they control pretty much all aspects of the games and what their employees can do.  The Universities maintain a significant independence from the NCAA and i'm guessing that this extends to personnel issues.

Nice! Bearcat win + New Orleans + New Years = big ticket sales.

I got 4 of the 17,500 tickets and will be in the Big Easy with a few buddies for New Years and the Sugar Bowl.

As they make the players sit out a year, they could do the same to the coaches.  The university could hire them, the NCAA could prevent them from coaching.  Of course, they wouldn't do it, but they could.

In other news, the media has been uninvited to tonights football banquet.

No dude You are the one that said something about contracts. No one else on this board has even mentioned it.

Great News!!!

Sources: Kelly to be new Irish coach

Brian Kelly, who has coached Cincinnati's football team to a 12-0 record this season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl, will be the new coach at Notre Dame, two sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4732205

Well, shit.

At least the University of Cincinnati is known for being good at things besides football. Notre Dame is a football stadium that happens to have a university attached to it.

Ohh, imagine that. An Irish Catholic gets wooed to an Irish Catholic university. Didn't see that one coming.

It's sad how they skirf teams between the end of season and the bowl game. That's kicking your teams ass on the way out the door.

One of a million reasons why I don't even bother to follow big money college and pro sports. You are rooting for a brand, nothing more.

Well he had the choice to be different and build something special, but instead he chose to follow the herd of past sellout coaches.

I feel horrible for the players. For some of them this is the second time they were told by a coach that they were staying only to see them leave within a week of making that promise. I hope they take their anger out on Florida. Go Bearcats!!

Great news???

Great news???

I was wondering the same thing

^^^^^^ Nice tool comment.  Maybe a lack of a college team.

Oh well, no shock here, and I will trust that Kelly is taking his dream job, but UC really has to figure this out.  I think they are past losing a mediocre coach to a middling school in another BCS conference (ala Dantonio to Michigan State), but they need to be able to hold onto a great coach in the future.  Obviously what they did with Kelly did not work, and now we will see if he can break the streak for ND.

Aside from this news, I would like to congratulate Bearcat Nation for selling out their ticket allotment by 9 AM this morning.  More striking is that this was done with the backdrop of a coach who was obviously bailing.  This is what really begins to build the tradition, and if you continue to build the fan base, especially in a football hotbed, the program will continue to grow.

Great news???

The great news is that ND will still find out that god isn't on their side every Saturday.

They should be able to attract someone of note.

^ I agree, Jim Kelly was on 1530 Homer today and mentioned that some experienced Division I coaches have already begun asking about the job.

I hope they win the Sugar bowl and Brian don't get credit for it.l He will only gets credit for the 12-0 regular season.

It was a nice run.  Skip Holtz is the name mentioned the most.  Interesting that the son of former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz could be UC's next head coach.

I'm hearing that Jeff Quinn will be the interim head coach for the bowl game.

There is something terribly wrong here.  It is one thing to leave while still under contract... but this guy is taking off right before the biggest game in the programs history.  Realistically, when is the next time Cincy will be in this position to finish an unbelievable undefeated season with a victory over a team that held the #1 rank all regular season and who most every expert picked to win the NC when the season began.

At least the University of Cincinnati is known for being good at things besides football. Notre Dame is a football stadium that happens to have a university attached to it.

I think ND can hold its own off the football field.  UC is a good school, but it hardly has the academic prestige of ND.  ND is a top 25 school.  Cincy is tier 2 or 3 I believe.  You are better off directing the smack at the whole Cincy vs. South Bend thing because that is a landslide.  South Bend is the armpit of the midwest.

Any  one know the last time a coach lead an undefeated(12-0) team to ANY bowl game but bailed at the last minute???

I mean isn't the point of playing is to win everything???

Urban Meyer left an undefeated Utah team to go to Florida, but after Utah won the Fiesta Bowl. Nick Saban left 9-2 Michigan State before their bowl game to join LSU. I don't know of any coach that meets your specific scenario, but it is not unusual to have a successful coach leave a program right before a bowl game.

It will be interesting to see if UC had the resources or inclination to match or exceed ND's offer. Given that there is no contest as to which team draws more television and live viewers or merchandising dollars (I can find ND apparel anywhere in the US, whereas it is difficult to even find a UC cap in Cleveland), UC cannot, at this time, match ND in cash or cache.

The fact remains, however, that under the existing BCS System, it takes years (if not decades) for teams to establish themselves in the eyes of pollsters as a prestige program in order to get a high enough ranking to hit the top two. Until there is a playoff system, teams such as UC, TCU, and Boise State have to accept that their programs are pit-stops to larger, more established programs. And, it's really in the best interest for UC in this unfair environment to graciously let go of Kelly in order to attract the next Kelly (albeit only for the next few years).

Great News!!!

This post is moved to the ND Football thread here on UO...oh wait it doesn't exist

Former Central Michigan coach Butch Jones was hired today to be the Bearcats new head football coach.  A good hire as he's worked under BK and RR and the transition should be pretty smooth.

  • 3 weeks later...

Huh!  The Bearcat won Mascot of the year!  Let's see if Mardy and the boys can seal the deal tonight!

It doesn't look good.

So, baseball season starts pretty soon, right?

We still have a very good basketball team to enjoy.

Elite teams do not give up 45 points at home to a 4-4 team win.

There... I fixed that for you.

you said it

Well, I hope Brian Kelly is happy up in South Bend.

I didn't like the comments the announcer was saying  near the end of the game. Tom was saying something about someone living in a car. The other announcer said this is the end result. WTF???

Did they even talk about anything other than Tim Tebow during the entire fourth quarter?

I didn't like the comments the announcer was saying  near the end of the game. Tom was saying something about someone living in a car. The other announcer said this is the end result. WTF???

He was implying that the hardship of living in his car to make tuition paid off in the end result of being a successful college football player at the Sugar Bowl.  Nothing more.

Yes, the Tim Tebow show was tiresome.  As was throwing long passes at the end.

Ouch!    It was still a great year for UC football, but for the love....................  That was painful to watch!!

What do you think the odds are that BK tries to convert Collaros to be an Irishman within the next few weeks?

Is it alright that I'm hoping Urban's health condition will worsen and Timmy's NFL career will be as spectacular as his predecessor, Chris Leak?

I highly doubt Tebow is going to do anything in the NFL. Especially if he gets a chance the play the Steelers. They'll just hurt him like they do to all the other QB's. Anyways it was an ugly game and I turned it off after the 1st quarter. There's always next year!

This is the second year that the Bearcats looked a little overwhelmed.  Last year was the team's first BCS bowl game, this year they were going up against the hyped Gators and the arguably one of the greatest graduating recruiting classes of all time.  Add in the Tebow/Meyer shenanigans and you have a Bearcats team that looked a bit overwhelmed by the hype and didn't get it together until the second half.  It just so happened that the game was already over by then.

I think we matched up better with TCU or Boise state.

Heck we would have matched up better against anybody other than Florida.  Insert Georgia Tech, Iowa, Ohio State, Oregon, TCU, Boise State or even Texas and UC would have done better.  Florida played one of its best games all season, and it showed, while UC played one of its worse.

Wow, that was a complete letdown.  This game felt eerily like the last time Ohio State played Florida, right down to the 27 point margin of defeat.  UC could just not stop that short passing game early and that was that as they say.

  • 8 months later...

Well, the Bearcats lose 14-28 last night to Fresno State. Not a good way to start the season as the offense looked dazed and confused most of the night. The O-line was atrocious while giving up 8 sacks. Not good, not good at all. I'm remaining hopeful that they get things clicking soon. Especially since NC State and Oklahoma are 2 of the next 3 games.

  • 1 month later...

Hey everyone, with all of the conference realignment talk and none of it ever positively including UC, my friends and I talked about a scenario in which the Big East and ACC joined into one large conference.  Completely conceptual, but worth considering.  I made a blog about it because I didn't know how else to present it.  So here is the link and I'm interested to get some other people's thoughts on it.  Thanks.
