UC clobbers O-State

Cincinnati takes advantage of Oregon State turnovers for signature 34-3 win

BY JOE KAY | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Freshman Marcus Barnett caught a touchdown pass and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, helping Cincinnati turn Oregon State’s mistakes into a 34-3 victory Thursday night.  The Bearcats (2-0) got a signature win for first-year coach Brian Kelly, who has installed a wide-open, no-huddle offense and tried to inject excitement into a football program that is treated like an afterthought locally.

Oregon State (1-1) got a sideline visit from famous alumni Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the Bengals’ receiving tandem. It sure didn’t help.  Sophomore Sean Canfield threw interceptions that set up a field goal and Ben Mauk’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Barnett, putting Cincinnati up 10-3 at halftime.

  • UC is now 8-0, still ranked #2 in both polls, and - first the first time ever - will host ESPN's college gameday this weekend:       Even if you aren't a college football fan,

  • I am booked and ready for the Cotton Bowl I hope the bearcats knock crimson tide off there feet. Our city needs this with the sad state of Bengals and Reds...

UC Football is tough, tough team...UofL and WVU are going to get some trouble when they come to Nippert this year.

Oh yeah...one more thing.  Two games and the defense has not yet allowed a touchdown.  How 'bout dem apples!

Who is Michigan?  I'm sorry, That is incorrect... The correct response is  "Who Is Cincinnat?"  Please select another category.  I'll take michigan apples for $1000, please Alex.

I was actually expecting more people but maybe since the students hadn't returned it was ok.  Defense was great, esp. when the offense was struggling.  Basically kept them in the game at the beginning.  Special Teams had some big plays too.

For UC, that was a good turnout for a game before students are back.  Not only will a lot more students be there, but they typically bring parents, friends and what not with the Student Guest tickets.  It will surely help out...I'm feeling better about the future of the entire athletic department.

Neville, Saw you, you guys looked great!! I was in the FRONT ROW... what a great win... The comment about WVU is warranted... our defence can stop the run... they are only going to get better. . . .

GO CATS!!!

93-6 in 2 games... go D

nice! I'm excited about the miami game. hopefully we can pull out a win over them. We'll see though.

^ I met the first "A" in "Cincinnati" of the shirtless, painted guys at one of the tailgates.  He said he was a business major I think.

Minter was on ESPN talking about how awful the local media was in covering Cincinnati Football

It was nice to see all the fans come out.  When I was there (98-02), the stands were like a ghost town.  One nice thing I remember is that they let you drink at the games, unlike 95% of other D-I schools.

Yes, but that could be at risk with the recent move to the Big East.  As of now they are grandfathered in...but I'm not sure how long that will last.

can't seperate a cincinnatian and their ice cold beer....

I did not know that.  They should fight to keep it allowed.  They have seemed to struggle to fill the stands historically and right or wrong, selling beer has to help.  Also, it would be a way to offset discounting the tickets to fill the stands.

You can bet the house that the athletic department will fight it tooth and nail.  It means lots o' money for athletics...money they can't afford to lose.

Especially when their budgets been cut by about 40,000 a year the last 2 years!

Did OSU coach Mike Riley go too long with Canfield?

What's this guy talking about?  The guy they replaced him with was just as bad, and he was playing against a soft late-game defense.

That's the truth. Another thing that I love about this city!

It seems as though the Bearcats have won over the ESPN analysts.  Just about every time they are talking college football they talk about how surprisingly good the Big East is and how UofL, WVU and Rutgers need to look out for UC.  They are saying that UC has the best defense in the Big East and that they have a spread offense that could hurt you at any moment.

Just wait until we start getting real talented recruits to fill out the roster!

screw him

you can't blame dantonio, he was going home.

you can't blame dantonio, he was going home.

I can, and I will...he personally told the most dedicated/involved student fans (RallyCats) that he was here to for UC...and that he wasn't planning on leaving the university.  No more than 6 months later...poof, he's gone.  I don't appreciate that; tell it to me straight and don't lie to me.

Not only that, but he left right before our bowl game...that could have really screwed things up there.  Oh and he decided to trash the university and city on his way out.  Kiss off Dantonio, I hope you fail miserably!

^ I agree, But it probably worked out better that he is gone. UC isn't just playing now, They're playing with style & people are noticing.

Very true...Dantonio never seemed to believe that the program to become anything more.  That's the vibe I got at least.  BTW, how 'bout that Big East...where are all those doubters now?  It wasn't enough that the conference went undefeated in its bowl games last year, but now mid-level teams are beating up on some of the "top conferences" (Pac10, SEC).  I know it's still early but so far the entire Big East only has 1 loss...IMO there are a good 5 or 6 teams that could finish in the Top 25 (WVU, OofL, Rutgers, Cincy, South Florida and Pitt is a long shot).

Big 10 what?!

Just wait until we start getting real talented recruits to fill out the roster!

So Rando - My nephew isn't a "real talented recruit"?  I'll let the 6'-3", 295 kid know you said so. :)

The BIG EAST has alot of untapped potential. I think they only get stronger every year. I'm glad vt & miami are gone, & how are they doing? Like we really care but...

I don't know your nephew...and certainly UC has talent on their team, but we don't get or attract those top 100 rated recruits.  That is what the program is trying to get to.  I hope you didn't take that personally.

Oh no, I was just kidding around, giving you a hard time.  Hence the smiley face emoticon!

On ESPN.com today, Cincinnati received 12 votes on the AP Top 25 and 2 on the USA Today Poll. Wahoo!!

I really like the idea of having this game at PBS every year.

Kelly examines UC-Miami setup

Visiting 'non-BCS school' is concern

BY BILL KOCH | September 11, 2007

If the Miami RedHawks didn't have enough motivation for their game Saturday at Yager Stadium against the University of Cincinnati, UC coach Brian Kelly gave them some more.  As the teams began preparations for the 112th renewal of a rivalry that began with a scoreless tie in 1888, Kelly - in his first year as UC coach - questioned Monday whether the Bearcats want to continue to play the RedHawks on a home-and-home basis, with the site of the game alternating between the schools.

"I respect the rivalry and the tradition," Kelly said. "I want to play Miami of Ohio. I think it's great for both institutions anytime you're that close.  "(But) we're a BCS conference. We have to look at our schedule and find out, is it in our best interest to travel to a non-BCS school? We have to think about that. That's going to be a decision that's made above my pay grade, but I have my influence in it and I make my opinion known."

That was beautiful.

I was at the game...and I must say that they looked VERY impressive.  Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

If only Miami could get into the BIG EAST...

It certainly has done wonders for the Bearcats...and that is across the board for all of the athletics programs.

Maby Another school in the Northeastern Ohio, to give UC a rival in upstate OHIO, that would be nice!

Did you also ride up on the alumni buses, Rando?  Think I'm going to reserve my hotel room in New Orleans for the evening of Jan. 7th.   Best damn team in Ohio!

Nope...I drove up and met up with some friends.

I read in the Enquirer today that UC will no longer be allowing standing in the concourse area.  This has always been allowed, in the past, but may the concourses at times too crowded to traverse.  Due to the "large crowds" expected at the rest of the home games this will no longer be allowed.  The news bit also stated that Marshall has returned 700 of their 3,000 allotted tickets and that those will be on sale, to the public, for $24 each.

It's the first time the Bearcats have been 4-0 since 1954. They won again today 40-14.

Amazing game... amazing atmosphere.... Simply AWESOME

It was great to be at a game that was sold out...the crowd was great, and I don't think I've EVER seen more students than that at any kind of function.  The students came out in full force...hopefully this atmosphere is here to stay for years to come.  I think the rest of the year is a lock with UofL and WVU coming to town.

ooohhhh...ooohhhhh....ooohhhhh...clap, clap...clap, clap.  UC

The Enquirer had some good shots from the game...view the rest of their gallery HERE!!!

Things are looking up for UC. This year was like their biggest Freshman year i heard.

I'm still laughing about Louisville losing at home to Syracuse.  I had seen Syracuse play a couple of times (mainly the Washington game), and they were positively inept.

I think we can win all of our games from here on, with the exception of WVU and possibly South Florida.  I have been saying that we'll end up with 2 loses...seeing how UofL has been playing that number could be revised to 1 loss.

The key thing is that we get WVU at home...that could play a very key factor in the outcome of the Big East standings.
