Go Legends!!

Is "indoor football" played by similar rules to "arena football"?

Essentially. The lack of nets distinguishes it, however (and means more footballs in the stands! )

Canton Legends to open season tonight

BY JIM THOMAS

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Last season, the Erie Freeze won one American Indoor Football Association game.  Another Keystone State AIFA team, the Pittsburgh RiverRats, won seven times and made the playoffs in its inaugural campaign.  The two franchises have melded, somewhat, into the Erie RiverRats.  The Canton Legends will find out how talented the new 'Rats are at 7 tonight when they host Erie in the kickoff to Canton's fourth indoor season.

What was the average Canton attendance last year?  Where do they play? And how big is their arena?

The Canton Civic Center, where the Legends play, seats 4,000. Their first year, the Legends drew ~ 1000 fans, second year probably ~1500 or so, and the third, probably around the same (sadly, I could only make one home game). For their home opener this year, the Legends only drew 1150. Come on, Akron/Canton/Massilion/Wooster! Come to the games! (and Legends - promote!)

Late mistakes sink Legends

CANTON - Sam Bourquin's baritone was down a few decibels. The Lady Legends' hips were shaking, not shimmyin'.  Even the Leathernecks lacked a little lungpower.  The 2008 Canton Legends were not the 2006 or 2007 high-scoring Legends their fans were used to seeing.  That was evident to the 1,100 in attendance at Memorial Civic Center who saw Canton's season-opening 38-24 loss to the Erie RiverRats.

Legends come up short again, fall to Carolina

BY JIM THOMAS

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON - The Canton Legends were trailing Carolina by 3 points with a minute to play, and hope was fading fast.  But Saturday was Faith Night at Memorial Civic Center.  When Canton's own Ryan Brinson intercepted a Speed pass at full speed, anything and everything looked possible.

Instead, the game ended as it stood then — 38-35, Speed — the Legends a yard away from victory for the second week in a row.  Canton quarterback Jamie Williamson's second-down scramble came up just shy of the goal line and his frantic effort to spike the ball before time expired was denied by the officials after a brief discussion.

I was at this game, with five friends. As I expected, it was a blast! Too bad the outcome wasn't what we were hoping for. When I'm out of school for the year, I'll be going to a few more, and I hope all of you try to make a game as well!

Come on you guys, lets support the team!

Come on you guys, lets support the team!

Were you at the game? What did you think?

I'm in North Carolina. If I were in the area, I'd go to the games. So I'm just chearleading.

Sports Spotlight: If the Legends fall, will anyone hear?

By TODD PORTER

CANTON - Slappy isn't happy. He's for sale along with the rest of the Canton Legends. Joe Hoffman bought the team in 2004. He's a good man with a noble, if not naive, heart.

Hoffman is a local guy. He took good money and threw it after bad. The Legends don't turn a profit. Hoffman has had to dig into his own pockets to keep the franchise afloat.

To call the Legends a struggling franchise when Hoffman took over four years ago doesn't do reality justice. The Legends weren't struggling. They were an embarrassment. That's no longer the case. They're just struggling now.

Legends player Rashan Hall says team plans on staying

BY JIM THOMAS

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON - Rashan Hall has said many times he loves Canton Legends fans.  Faced with a possible sale of the team, the former McKinley High School star only wishes there were more than just the die-hards.  "The fans of Stark County, they love their high school sports," Hall said. "They love pro sports. The minor-league sports, that's a tough sell.

Hall, though, is not discouraged about a sale. Or about the team's 0-4 start as it heads to Huntington, W.Va., for a 7 p.m. game Saturday against the Heroes.  "The team is planning on staying in Canton," said Hall, who is in his third year with Canton and fourth in indoor football.  "I know that. The record, that part has been frustrating. We've been so close every week. Really, we've lost every game inside (the opponent's) 5-yard line.

Oh, and they're now 0-5 with an embarrassing 49-6 loss @ Huntington.

...and the Legends record their first win of the year!

Unfortunately, they've limped to the finish. If the Legends come back (with money), hopefully they move to the CIFL - a better league. If they don't come back, which seems possible, hopefully the CIFL (which has offices in N. Canton) moves in and establishes a new team in the area. There's two home games left - hopefully some UOers will get out there and show the team some love!

Legends end season-long losing streak

CANTON It was a mix of old and new. Veterans and rookies. Offense and defense.

On Friday night, it all came together for the Canton Legends. Finally, after nine losses, the Legends had a 34-22 American Indoor Football Association victory over the Fayetteville (N.C.) Guard before a sparse crowd at Memorial Civic Center.

Legends report: Hoffman sees promise for team in 2009

BY JIM THOMAS

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON Joe Hoffman II loved his Canton Legends when they won the 2006 league title. He loves them now, even though they're 2-10 in 2008.

But why, after four lean years in a mean business, three as owner, does Hoffman want to hang on to Canton's indoor football team? "Any time a company makes it to the fifth year, that's a good thing," the Legends owner said Thursday.

Hoffman was already looking ahead. He's 'officially' committed to staying put, just two months after putting the American Indoor Football Association franchise for sale on eBay. He posted the announcement about a return for 2009 on the team's Web site www.cantonlegends.com earlier this week.

Legends finished on a good note

CANTON - The teenage boy approached Legends running back Hassan Brown and asked for his wrist bands. Brown ripped them off. "You want this?" Brown asked, pointing at his black skull cap. He gave it away and added, "I don't have nothing more to give."

The Canton Legends gave their band of hardy fans everything they had Saturday night. The 500 or so who came to watch the curtain drop on a lost season found what they were looking for, a last-second, 43-39 Legends' victory over Huntington.

Nice to see a positive end to a mostly negative season. Here's hoping for another season of Legends football!

The Canton Legends have their schedule out for the '09 season. I'll go ahead and link you to it (shamelessly) through the Legends blog I just started. I hope all of you get the chance to make it to a game - or more!
