^ I'm glad he is an urbanist who supports the streetcar. I don't think that automatically qualifies him for sheriff, though (I'm not implying that that is what you were saying). Jim Neil is also a city resident who lives in Sayler Park, though not exactly as urban as Donovan. I'm not sure his opinion on the streetcar, though I don't think that actually matters much in my decision because the only influence the sheriff can have is getting others to agree with him. He has no authority on the matter...

This isn't an endorsement but here's how I see it. Donovan has been Chief Deputy Sheriff since 1997 so I'm confident he's qualified. A lot of downtown/OTR friends of mine support him - most of them are Democrats too. The thing is he works and lives and has a business downtown and is an evangelist for urban living. He was the one who got Cunningham giddy about OTR as noted above.

And I think it matters where elected officials stand on the streetcar, especially Republicans, regardless of position. When current Sheriff Leis ® wrote an editorial in the Enquirer supporting the streetcar in the midst of the ballot initiative, that helps.

Until Neil takes a stand on the streetcar, my support would reside with Donovan. But that's just me - someone who thinks the streetcar is an important part of Cincinnati's future.

  • For years, I have been unable to view any article on the Enquirer's website, as it always says that I've exceeded the free article limit, even if I used a new web browser/cleared cookies/used Incognit

WVXU and Cincinnati Business Courier are infinitely better local news sources than the Enquirer.

  • I am not convinced that the general public of Greater Cincinnati would be any worse off if Gannett was sold to new owners who shut the Enquirer down completely.

There's no effing reason why a county sheriff should voice an opinion one way or the other on the city's public transportation projects.  The whole reason Leis did that was because COAST organized the opposition to his jail tax.

The fact that he has been the #2 guy since 1997 means he probably won't change anything in the department.

The Enquirer's site blocking paywall activated today, guess that was my last visit there ever!

I just read the headlines and then get the news from the tv stations or the Business Courier.

Pretty much.  The Business Courier is fantastic.

As has been pointed out before, you can get around the Enquirer's paywall by clearing your cookies, switching to a different browser, or switching to a different device.

But why would you want to?

^good point. The only consequence of the paywall for me is I visit cincinnati.com far less and rarely click on links to it even though I know I'll never hit the paywall.

It seems the Enquirer is banking on people paying for their paper simply because they always have. Without a change in strategy and emphasis on real journalism - the paper will die. They also should have some sort of statement of principles.

They also should have some sort of statement of principles.

They do. I quote:

""

The only thing I clicked after the wall was Reds news and with that done, I doubt I'll get close until next spring.

It's annoying to view the Enquirer on a mobile device. I have not paid for a subscription because I was already an infrequent reader - it was out of habit that I would read anything on their site. But on a mobile browser, it asks for a $10/month fee. If I click on the desktop site version, it allows me to view so many before cutting me off - so I've already bypassed their paywall.  I can clean my cookies and cache with an app or through the settings of the browser, so their paywall is now useless.

On the desktop, you can selectively clear a certain cookie (can't look it up at the moment) to eliminate the paywall. Query "Gannett paywall bypass".

I do feel like they've had some incrementally better content since the change.  Call me crazy.

^Maybe, but the repeated habit of making useless photo galleries as top news is really asinine.

Yep.  Noticed that too.  I use a script blocker so I don't get alot of the garbage but I assume that is done for addition page views/banner ad displays.

Cincinnati Enquirer announces new palm-size version

CINCINNATI, OH - Seeking to strengthen it's position on the leading edge of new media, The Cincinnati Enquirer has announced plans for a new palm size version of it's daily newspaper. The tiny print edition will be available on newsstands, in bookstores, and from diminutive vending machines soon.

“Finally, we are ready to give the newspaper reading public what they want,” said Margaret Buchanan, President and Publisher of Enquirer Media. “All the news in a beautiful package that is approximately the size of a deck of cards. In fact, every Sunday we will print the image of a different playing card on the back page, so as a bonus you’ll have a full deck in just 52 weeks.”

You should turn off your blocking add-ons and take a look at it.  Fun times.  It might make your eyes bleed if you don't brace yourself for the shock.

^ Nothing whatsoever is gained from reading that article. Please avoid.

I'm really loving (read as sarcasm) the slugs at the end of feature articles for the writers. Here's Barry's:

Let the jokes commence.

That's like how Dave Mustaine couldn't end a song on Megadeth's first record without some dig like "You think I'm kidding don't you?" or "You better believe it."

Enquirer endorses Romney and Brown.

More surprised over Brown than Romney. But not really surprised, overall.

^they endorsed Pillich, too. Don't think they are tea drinkers.

I think they just make more or less random Democratic endorsements in and effort to appear bipartisan/nuanced/sophisticated. If they show too much partisanship, their opinions get written off by half of their potential audience in a region so politically divided.

The Fishwarp has endorsed Dr Lakshmi Sammarco, another Democrip.

The 'Warp is Republican but they don't seem to be endorsing teas & Rebloodlican 'placeholders'.

IMHO, The differences between Sammarco & Kabelos are vast. Sammarco wants to move forward while Triantiflou's cousin wants to do it "the way we always did".

This is an important race & the Fishwarp is on the right side on this one.

They're happy to pander to the tea party fringe in their op-eds and routine news coverage, but they can always be counted on to endorse the GOP establishment for elections. It's a microcosm of the GOP itself: happy to use rabid "grassroots" tea party support for ratings and PR purposes, but when the rubber meets the road, they won't hesitate to throw the tea party under the bus in favor of the monied establishment.

The Sherrod Brown endorsement was a nice surprise, but I think that speaks more to the lunacy of Brown's opposition than anything else.

exactly

It may also have to do with Brown polling well, making him an easy Democrat to pick without offending too many people. Of course, that is related to the lunacy of his opposition.

Similar to the Cincinnati Herald picking Republicans in cases where there is no contest -- Steve Chabot, Brad Wenstrup, Ted Hubbard (County Engineer running unopposed).

I will never pay...Ever...for the garbage in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

They had 4191 precincts in Ohio's votes counted by 2AM this morning.  They gave Romney a 92,000 vote lead including leads in Cuyahoga County.  Naturally Drudge report picked this up and reported it as facts.

The Enquirer then released a statement saying it was 'dummy data'.  What I find hilarious is that even in their fake data they still can't stomach to put Obama ahead

Breaking election update from the media juggernaut, Cincinnati Enquirer!

Reporter slices, dices state politically

In an ABC/Yahoo! video and story, Enquirer Statehouse reporter Paul Kostyu explains the political geography of Ohio.

Kostyu, who has been the paper’s primary Romney reporter, said President Barack Obama is expected to take the urban areas while former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney will take the rural areas.

What a joke of a paper. There was a poll today about was he the right choice and one of the options was "Here I come Canada?" Wow just wow.

Do you think they wouldn't have had the same pole had the election gone the other way?

It would make more sense for Obama voters to want to move to Canada after a Romney victory here, considering the right wing in Canada is arguably more liberal than Obama.

I got a chuckle out of one of my Republican FB friends having a conversation with her R friends about moving to Canada. I mean, all you have to do is think "single-payer healthcare" to see the obvious dissonance.

Yep, the conservatives are going to flee to Canada. Ya know that nation with socialized medicine, stricter gun control, the most liberal LGBT rights in the Americas, and a European monarch on the money.

shouldn't it have been Somalia?

weird article (by Horstman, so...):

IN-DEPTH: Cashing in assets or selling city's jewels?

A. It's not in depth

B. it doesn't mention Hamilton County selling off assets in general & parking in particular.

C. None of the opponents quoted have a concrete alternative

D. well, it's just biased, slanted & pandering. If you can walk like Barry, I don't know why you'd even care about parking.

Yesterday, for the first time I can remember, I heard a 30 second commercial on 700wlw for The Enquirer.  Urging(begging) listeners to pay for a subscription

Does the Enquirer ever use high-pressure sales techniques to get people to subscribe? I never experienced it from them, but I've dealt with it from the Dispatch from time to time.
