Posted March 14, 200817 yr How high will gas prices make it before Sept 1st, 2008? (based on national average)
March 19, 200817 yr Gasoline price spike has only just begun Motorists should expect to pay upwards of $3.75 a gallon in the coming weeks as prices at the pump catch up with record crude, but relief may arrive by summer. By Steve Hargreaves, CNNMoney.com staff writer Last Updated: March 19, 2008: 11:35 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline has hit record levels - and experts say it will likely continue to soar in tandem with the skyrocketing price of crude. The national average retail price for gas has risen about 30 cents in the past month to $3.279 a gallon, exceeding the all-time high set last year, according to the motorist organization AAA. And experts say motorists should prepare to pay nearly $4 a gallon - and in some places even more than that - before the price of gas finally comes down in the late spring as high prices crimp demand. April 14, 200817 yr Gas prices could pass $3.50 in weeks Monday, April 14, 2008 2:00 PM NEW YORK (AP) -- Gas prices fluctuated over the weekend but appear poised to resume their seemingly relentless trek toward a record high milestone of $3.50 a gallon. Forecasts call for gas to peak as high as $3.65 within a month. Oil prices, meanwhile, rose to within a dollar of last week's record of $112.21 a barrel as the dollar fell and oil supplies were disrupted in the U.S. and overseas. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/national_world/stories/2008/04/14/gas.html?sid=101
April 15, 200817 yr Hard to say. I wish the government would tax it while it's low (anything below 3.80), then subsidize it a little if the barrel hikes extremely high while gradually allowing gasoline to be more expensive. Neocons wouldn't go for that though and I don't know how OPEC allocates oil.
April 15, 200817 yr Way to go! All the talk of boycotting the gas stations of XYZ Oil Co. or another company don't do a bit of good since all oil companies must buy oil from nationalized oil companies on the open market. But if you want to actually make a difference, do what WalkerEvans did: buy a bus pass. Or buy a bicycle and actually use it for trips you once made by car. Or walk more. Or move to a walkable neighborhood. Or telecommute more.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 15, 200817 yr OK. Then brace yourself for the latest from John McCain.....the man is clueless....not to mention a political panderer. An excerpt from a larger story on CNN.com: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/04/15/mccain.economy/index.html McCain also will say he wants Congress to declare a summer gas-tax holiday, suspending the 18.4-cent gas tax and 24.4-cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day this year. Because so many industries rely on gas for production, "these immediate steps will help to spread relief across the American economy," he will say.
April 15, 200817 yr What a clueless #!@$. I suppose that we will be siphoning money for our highway infrastructure from tolls? Oh wait, he's already opposed to that.
April 15, 200817 yr McCain's gas tax cut draws fire Skeptics say it will do little to reduce prices and stimulate the economy, and could leave road projects unfunded. By Steve Hargreaves, CNNMoney.com staff writer Last Updated: April 15, 2008: 1:49 PM EDT NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Amid record gas prices and a faltering economy, Sen. John McCain called for suspending the federal gas tax Tuesday - a call that was met with skepticism from many experts. In a wide ranging economic speech at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee called for a hiatus in the 18.4 cent-a-gallon federal gas tax from Memorial Day until Labor Day - the period when vacationing Americans spend the most time on the road. April 15, 200817 yr Is he serious? Doesn't he realize that our infrastructure is in disrepair and as far as I am aware of the gas tax funds the transportation budget. Last time I checked... ASCE gave our infrastructure horribly low marks. I guess what I am trying to say is cut defense spending before raping the Federal Transportation Budget.
April 15, 200817 yr I know where we can get 12 billion dollars a month to use for MUCH NEEDED items like infrastructure, education, etc..etc...
April 15, 200817 yr McCain shares something in common (besides the conservative wing of the GOP) with our former Ohio Sec. of State Ken Blackwell. When asked about his plans for improving Ohio's railroads to move more people and freight, Blackwell was quoted in several statewide papers when he ran for Governor as saying "rail isn't even on my radar". Not saying it swung the election (thankfully) to Governor Strickland (who just as publically embraced the Ohio Hub and passenger rail), but I think Blackwell's comments made him look way out of touch with reality. I suspect McCain's latest economic "spew" will do the same for him.
April 16, 200817 yr I know where we can get 12 billion dollars a month to use for MUCH NEEDED items like infrastructure, education, etc..etc... where...?
April 16, 200817 yr I just recieved my credit card bill for last month...$367 was for gas. Of course that includes another trip to Cleveland, but it was still a new record for me.
April 16, 200817 yr I saw diesel for 4.15; but I don't think 89 octane will get above 4, I think it will get to 3.99 9/10ths
April 16, 200817 yr http://www.asce.org/pressroom/news/display_press.cfm?uid=4110 GAS TAX HOLIDAY" NO VACATION FOR ECONOMY, CONSUMERS OR THE ENVIRONMENT Media Contact(s): Joan Buhrman (703) 295-6406 April 15, 2008 “Gas Tax Holiday” No Vacation for Economy, Consumers or the Environment Washington, D.C.—Sen. John McCain’s proposed “gas tax holiday” would only weaken the U.S. economy by placing an even greater strain on the nation’s already overburdened transportation infrastructure the American Society of Civil Engineers said today. The three month moratorium on the gas tax could cost the nation’s surface transportation infrastructure as much as $8.5 billion, and delaying these much needed transportation projects would also have a significant ‘trickle down’ cost to the American people, while providing them no real benefit.
April 16, 200817 yr When I heard McCain proposing that, I knew he was way too stupid to be president. BTW, that press release ought to be posted at: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,14971.0.html or http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,12740.0.html "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 3, 200817 yr Costly oil could mean recession - Soros Investor tells lawmakers that economy is at risk as housing bubble deflates and rising oil prices rise. Senate panel probes whether speculators are manipulating prices. By David Goldman, CNNMoney.com staff writer Last Updated: June 3, 2008: 11:17 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- High oil prices are driving the U.S. economy into a recession, George Soros, the famous fund manager and commodities investor, told members of the Senate Commerce Committee in testimony Tuesday. The committee received testimony from a former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) official, a consumer rights activist, Soros and others in an attempt to find out if oil prices are being manipulated by speculators. June 8, 200817 yr Gas price record reaches $4 a gallon AAA's daily survey tops the milestone for the first time after a 1.7-cent rise Sunday. Last Updated: June 8, 2008: 6:32 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline rose to a milestone mark Sunday as the national average compiled by motorist group AAA reached $4 a gallon for the first time. The national average for regular unleaded rose 1.7 cents to $4.005, according the daily measure on the group's Web site. That surpassed the previous record of $3.989 set Thursday. June 8, 200817 yr Yep, there's a lot of pain out there. There's also a lot of good things happening, like forcing efficiencies into a economies (like ours!) that have incredible amounts of waste. Also, when I interviewed Tom Whipple (of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas) two weeks ago, he noted that gasoline retailers are purchasing large "5" numerals for their gas station price signs. Those are the numerals for the dollar amount.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 9, 200817 yr President, Congress offer no immediate help on gas prices By Ed Henry CNN White House Correspondent WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Before departing the White House early Monday for a farewell tour of Europe, President Bush stole a page from his predecessor and suggested he feels American consumers' pain. "A lot of Americans are concerned about our economy," Bush said. "I can understand why. Gasoline prices are high, energy prices are high. I do remind them that we have put a stimulus package forward that is expected to help boost the economy. And of course, we'll be monitoring the situation." June 10, 200817 yr I do remind them that we have put a stimulus package forward that is expected to help boost the economy. And of course, we'll be monitoring the situation." That oil drilling in Alaska is expensive. It's no solution. I'd rather see that kept as a reserve. Seriously, how can Bush talk about feeling our pain and offering this as a solution without mentioning alternative energy and mass transit? His loyalty to the oil industry is obvious. I'm no economist but it seems to me that this 'reminder' of the stimulus package is meant to make us feel happy about being handed free money. That money will be sent right back to the country we borrowed it from and the wealthier the Chinese get, the more we'll be competing with them for oil so the time for responsible land-use planning, public transit and alternative energy, is now. Our defense has already spread itself too thin for us to start wars over resources. I understand there's no quick fix but there's a lot more we could be doing now.
June 10, 200817 yr Bush is probably going to be very upset that my stimulus check is going to pay for my debt reduction. In other words, I'm likely paying off a purchase I made during the Clinton Administration. June 10, 200817 yr Bush is probably going to be very upset that my stimulus check is going to pay for my debt reduction. In other words, I'm likely paying off a purchase I made during the Clinton Administration. That is why increasing unemployment benefits and investing in public transportation would have provided greater economic stimulus
