so, I just signed a lease with a few friends for a house on Flora Street on the border of Clifton and Corryville in Cincinnati.

our landlord, Al Tepperberg of "Al's Clifton Housing" (http://www.cliftonhousing.com/) seems potentially sketch and I've heard both good and bad things about him.

I just wanted to see if anyone here has any experience with him...he owns like 50-60 properties all over the UC Uptown area, so some of you may have rented these places or at least been through them...

thanks!

isnt flora in CUF?

Yah Flora is in CF (i intentionally left out the U... University Heights is NOT part of CUF anymore... hasn't been for about 10 years.)

WHAT!  So how does that work now.  is it its own n'hood or does it simply not exist.  In the CAGIS dataset, its still called CUF and UC/Burnet Woods is called 'Heights.'  But if theres anything I've learned from working at CAGIS, its 'who knows'....

Just call it Uptown to be safe.  No one (including the community councils) can truly agree on the boundaries for the Uptown neighborhoods of Clifton, University Heights, Clifton Heights, Fairview, Corryville, The Heights, etc.  It's a hot mess.

Currently there is a land battle over who controls Burnett Woods...Clifton says they do, The Heights thinks that it's theirs or at least partially thiers.  Like I said - HOT MESS.

University heights is now known as The Heights. The Heights broke off because CUF would not allow temporary Residents (students) to vote in their matters. This irked many residents and they voted to break off. Since then CUF has  (many years) tried to get the Heights removed from the community council list because they say that they have no residents (based on their definition). The Heights was formed because students deserve a voice in the city. Millions of tax dollars are spent because of the students at the University, CUF treated them as second class citizens.

Interesting, I've never heard a single thing about this Heights business.  Is it recent?

not really... it has been a long standing issue. My information is that the break occurred in the late nineties

On the original question, all I've ever heard or experienced has been bad. I can provide specific details, but suffice to say he is not one of the better landlords in the 'hood.

Never rented from al, so I have no answers there, but I lived in CUF for the past 18 years and served in ith CUF Neighborhood Association for 5 or 6 of those years (Until moving to Delhi). CUF itself has vary concrete and definite boundaries that are on record with the city, and University Heights does indeed still exist. My house on the dead end of Marshall Ave, was in University Heights, but not in "The Heights", which is sort of an overlay neighborhood. Everywhere 'The Heights' exists is also overlaid on parts of CUF, as both neighborhood groups have 'jurisdiction', so to speak. Yes there is tension between the groups at times, at least when I was serving on the board mostly due to the differing interests the two groups serve (students & residents & investors). The Burnett Woods thing is new to me though, but the Heights claimed part of the McMillan Business district in the past too, which to us was always and only the Clifton Heights part of CUF. Feel free to move this as it is off topic, but I just wanted to stand up for my 'hood and clear up misstatements of it's demise.

I rented from Al back in 2001-2002.  Compared to all the other landlords I had, he was pretty good.  Granted, he's a jerk to talk to, but as I only spoke to him when I signed my lease and when I moved out that was fine.  He had an amazing handy man service.  Once we lost heat over Christmas break.  We came back to find the house freezing.  The maintenance guy came out and stayed for 24 hours just to make sure he had fully fixed it!  I was amazed because most of my other landlords would take forever to fix anything, if they ever did.

hah i find this thread hilarious

al is a riot, you have to learn to like him for who he is and not worry about what he says, he means no harm but can sometimes be pretty straightforward with people and i think its the right attitude with all the first-time renters he deals with.

he takes time to explain things and is VERY quick with all his services. A large branch of a tree fell down against my place one night and we called al in the morning, by the time we got back from class at 11, the branch was removed!

I agree, he's great.  He calls bad tenants "idiots" for trashing his houses, getting city fines repeatedly, etc., and he'll tell you stories about the stupid things renters have done to his houses.  But if you do things like "pay your rent on time" and "don't trash your house", he is very professional and accommodating if you ask him for things.  Another huge advantage of renting from him is that he won't increase your rent as long as you keep renewing your lease... I'm definitely taking advantage of that as this is the 4th year renting from him at the same house.
