Is it just me to think that CNN has a great bias toward Atlanta? I mean come on.. There was some damage and no one was killed yet they are covering this tornado like it was doomsday.  I don't care if it hit their HQ. So what. There is more important news in this world.

When a Tornado went through Cincinnati a few year back 4 people was killed.  The day after  this happened you didn't hear it mentioned anymore on CNN.  Im thinking about switching to another news network. I hate bias when it comes to their hometown.

If it was the local news i could understand it. But CNN is suppose to be a worldwide news reporting agency. There is more things going on in this world besides Atlanta.

It seems to be the general trend with any news organization, but I agree CNN is probably the worst at being parochial.  Kind of typical, given Atlanta's self-congratulatory and world class this, world class that attitude.  Some things of international importance hardly get a whisper on CNN.

I flew to Atlanta Saturday and there was no sign of the tornado until getting downtown.  I'd guess 5% of the windows were knocked out of a number of the big buildings in the CNN area, the southernmost part of the downtown business district.  Other than that is was business as usual.  I didn't have time to walk down there to check things out but from what I could see yes, there was some damage, but it wasn't apocalyptic, and it was really only a fraction of the overall downtown area.

Speaking of world-class, I saw Olympic Park for the first time after 10 visits to Atlanta.  It was amazingly mediocre, like the sort of redevelopment park I'd expect to see in say Erie, PA or Bellefontaine.  Also, I rode Marta from the airport for the first time as well.  It's great that they have convenient rail service at the airport but the ride in is totally unimpressive.  I can only imagine what was going through the heads of people visiting from other countries back in 1996 riding down that line.  This is the olympics?!!

Also, CNN's building is a joke.  It says small-time, not big-time.

Its a huge deal to the City.  As the Tornado, damaged our office and the adjacent Omni, Georgia Dome, Phillips arena.  I twould be same if this happened in any other city, the local media would be all over it.

^ Yes maybe, but if i was a big advertiser on that station i would be PISSED. In their minds do they think more people would toon in just because there was some damage to some of the buildings? The average joe don't care that a tornado hit a major city, unless 100's died. In this case no one died.

True, and to many Atlantaians, CNN is kind of "local" in a way. Much like The Weather Channel. If this happened outside of FOX News' offices in NYC, you would be complaining about all the attention being focused just outside of FOX News' studios.

Two have died in this incident BTW.

^ 2 died in a separate storm 50 miles away. No one died in the tornado that hit downtown.

Sadly, tragedy is big ratings, so any advertiser would get there money's worth.  The advertisers are schedule to go on regardless, unless they pull it.  CNN is the number resource for news (especially 7PM to 11PM) so people will "toon" in.

I've been watching the last twenty minutes and haven't noticed any changes, I see commercials played in concert with their appropriate programming.

This is no different than the wildfires in Southern California last fall. Many of the news stations carried that as a number one story.  We carried lots of coverage of that Katrina and 911

^ 2 died in a separate storm 50 miles away. No one died in the tornado that hit downtown.

I don't think that's incorrect.  Once I get a number I'll list it.

What is your real issue with CNN?

I haven't been able to watch much of this, except of the clips that are given online, because I don't have cable.  But I think it is cool that they are giving coverage over something that affects them directly.  I mean, so often they report on things that all they do is observe and really have no direct impact on them.  It's kind of cool to see that CNN is just like any other company and can be effected by natural disasters as well.  Even acts of violence, as happened a few months ago when someone went on a shooting rampage in the Center.  They are a 24 hour operation, they really just can't go off the air and they have things to do.  Was anyone watching CNN when this happened?  It would have been interesting to see what they were doing when the tornado struck.

On another note, what cities CBD have been effected by tornados recently.  I guess within the past ten years.  Starting back in high school, I remember when Salt Lake, Miami, Nashville, and Fort Worth were all hit by tornadoes downtown.  So, are tornadoes really that rare in the CBD?  Are they rare because large cities only take up so little of the over all land in the United States?  Sometimes people make it sound like tornadoes in cities are so rare because of the heat they produce.  Is there any truth to this?

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool liberal-democrat, and support CNN as much as anyone else, but I definitely have noticed Atlanta-related stories getting an egregious amount of attention on CNN.  This tornado is a good example.  I first had this thought a year or two ago when they promoted the hell out of a CNN special presentation revisiting the courthouse shootings that happened there a few years back, which also got  LOT of attention from CNN at the time.  And then there was that women who converted to Jesus the convict that was holding her hostage in her apartment in Suburban-Atlanta, who's story we were forced to hear ad-nausuem.

I'd much prefer CNN to any other network, but the self-important Atlanta routine does get a little old.

The way the building is made, if you're in the interior or connecting to the Omni portion of the building you cannot see outside.  Many people stated they didn't even know what happened or they just thought it was a wind gust and when they came outside they saw glass from the Omni, Phillips arena and McCormick's & Schmidts.  Then the report came the columns in Centenial park had be knocked over and the Westin & Merchandise Mart windows were blowing out.

The folks in the Omni and the Westin were most affected.  A staff members girlfriend was having drinks at the top of the westin and the glass elevators that go up the side of the building were damaged.

Honestly, not much news is shown from Atlanta on CNN any longer.  The majority of programing is straight out of New York.  There is even a 90 minute block of time devoted to International news from London.  IIRC, 10AM to 11 then Noon until about 4 PM is the only news reported from Atlanta.  Everything else is from NYC or location.

Hopefully that will be cleaned up in the next two weeks!

I don't watch CNN at all (I get lost amongst my 200 dishnetwork channels), but I do check out CNN.com freqently. The only thing that I notice is that CNN generally reports on urban crimes when they occur in Atlanta (drive by; rape, etc), but they don't talk about this stuff when it happens in other cities.

Sure the torando was relatively weak, but it is so incredibly rare that tornados hit the centers of major metropolitan areas.  Imagine if a tornado swept through along the riverfront and hit the stadiums, 3rd/4th Street office buildings, damaged Carew Tower and wrecked Fountain Square.

The torando that hit Downtown Atlanta hit so many iconic/symbolic structures...and went directly through Downtown as there were two major events going on (SEC Tourny and Atlanta Hawks).

I went down early Saturday morning and took tons of pictures.  You'll be seeing them most likely later tonight.

I wish the tornado would have completely destroyed Atlanta.... :shoot:

I hate that city...

A tornado hit downtown Nashville in 1998 and major storm hit downtown Memphis in 2003.

Nashville and Memphis combined do not equate to Atlanta.  We're also talking about an EF-2 Tornado that hit the virtual center of the Downtown area.  It really is a miracle that no one was killed.

Nashville's tornado wasn't as bad (but it did hit the city center), but Memphis's Hurricane Elvis (hit the city center and the entire county) was the equivalent of a category 2 hurricane. 7 peopld died and much of the city was without power for two weeks. Some neighborhoods didn't get power back until three weeks after the storm. Many homes and buildings were destroyed and tree-cutting service crews from all over the southern US were brought in over the next month to help with the clean up. For some odd reason, the devastation did not make it into the national news. In Memphis, the July 22, 2003 is known as the day that the nation forgot Memphis.

One of the worst tornadoes in recent history was the 1999 F-5 that ripped through Oklahoma City killing 44 people.

One of the worst tornadoes in recent history was the 1999 F-5 that ripped through Oklahoma City killing 44 people.

It was the outbreak of 66 tornadoes that killed 50 people over Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Kansas.  These tornadoes also came close to the city center, but did not actually make a direct hit (about 5 miles away from the Downtown area).  Needless to say this was the costliest tornado outbreak ever, but it still not not hit the symbolic center of a major metropolitan center.  Had it done so the damage totals would have been far greater.

Both times I was in the NYC area (one for three days, the other two weeks) it seemed that every story on CNN was about NYC. Maybe it was just coincidence, but I think CNN's mix of stories on any given day may be different depending on which area you are in.

Thats incorrect.

Was it "headline news", you were watching or NY1?  Those are market specific.

Does Fox News have a New York bias?

^They are "Fair and Balanced"

It was Headline News. Is NY1 a NYC-specific CNN network?

Of course they have an Atlanta bias. I don't see anyone complaining that P&G has a Cincinnati bias. Maybe Sherwin Williams has a Clevelad bias. No one here is complaining!

Did you forget the smiley next to your comment or did you forget that P&G and Sherwin Williams are not mega media conglomerates?

Headline News is market specific as it's partnered with a local affliate and news is presented in a 30 minute format.  Cleveland headline news is different than Chicago's, which is different than Las Vegas', which is different than San Francisco's and so on and so forth.

NY1 (NYC's 24 hour news channel) is owned by Time Warner Cable as CNN is owned by Turner. However, you wont see Headline News in a market where we own both a cable system and a local channel.  There are exceptions such as hotel cable networks and certain satellite Providers.

They happen to be in mass media. I'd expect a bias to some extent. If they prattled on about Atlanta forever it would be a problem but we're talking about a rare tornado incident. I wonder if people in charge of program content all even live in Atlanta; I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them didn't.

Serious, the Tornado was getting more coverage than the people that died in the Crane accident. I hope they change  their tune now that 7 people have died in that accident.

People the tornado damaged the CNN building and is in their home town, of course they are going to cover it.  If something happened at Ohio State, the local media would drive it into the ground.  If Fountain Square blew up in Cinci, it would be a lead story for days.

The crane happened in NYC.  NY1 has been covering the crane incident Ad nauseam.

For their sake, I sure hope they don't. ;)

Scheduling and Programming is in Atlanta.

I guess I will stick up for CNN, even though I hate Atlanta.  I didn't watch any of the multiple cable news outlets during the past week, but for CNN, this hit close to home, really close to home.  I am sure if something happened to the FOXNews studio or MSNBC studios that was similar, they would have done the same thing.  I'd rather see a different news story, than having 5 stations showing me the same thing.  What it a little over-kill on CNN's part, maybe, but like I said, it hit close to home.

I wish that Erica Hill worked out of the Atlanta center.  :fight:

Should we start a new thread.  Hottest cable news tv anchors?

Does anyone else sense the sexual tension between Erica Hill and Anderson Cooper every night?  When I'm watching I see their eyes making that "I wanna jump your bones" look as they do their little bit on AC360.
