not sure if we have a thread like this, but "the what cities have you visited?" thread made me wonder where forumer people have actually lived.

this should include where you lived as a child of course -- and i guess anyplace you paid rent for or owned as an adult. also including college and military.

for example, as a kid mine would be:

cleveland, lorain

college days:

lorain, the beegees (oh & ky), toledo -- some summers in clev, cinci, westbury, ny & queens, ny

as a real adult:

columbus, manhattan

so anyone else game for this?

  • Grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio

  • Went to College in Columbus, Ohio - Moved back home after college for two years

  • tired of living in my Dad's castle and I buy first home in Cleveland (Shaker Square)

  • My job moved me to London, moved back home to Cleveland, lost job

  • I find new job in New York and rent an apartment in Brooklyn Heights.

  • Tired of renting and not being able to decorate the way I want, I buy second home in Harlem

^You went to Fisher?

Doesn't seem like you like Columbus very much  :? :?

I grew up in Columbus, moved to Cincinnati at age 12, moved back to Columbus for a year during highschool, moved back to Cincinnati again, went to college at Cincinnati, so here I am stuck in Cincinnati until I graduate. I've only lived in Columbus and Cincinnati. I prefer the physical city of Cincinnati but I like the people in Columbus more. I wish I could combine the two.

Here's the order.  Apparently I've now moved 19 times.  A lot of those "moves" were just summer couch-crashes though and a two month, post-college extra-embarrassing move-in with the parents:

Cincinnati

Kansas City

Knoxville

Nashville

Knoxville

Cincinnati

Knoxville

Cincinnati

Knoxville

Cincinnati

Knoxville

Nashville

Boston

Athens, OH

Cincinnati

Columbus

Cincinnati

Cincinnati

Trotwood

Dayton

Denver

Then brief stints in Vallejo (CA), Brooklyn, Omaha, Boston (Back Bay), Collingwood (ONT), and Atlanta

Then back to Dayton

Then Columbus for college.

And now...?

David, I know we have had this conversation before and I agree.  Although ever since moving down here, Cincinnatians have surprised me.  Unfortunately and fortunately, they've surprised me on both ends of the spectrum.

Grew up in Dover, Ohio, and moved to Columbus to attend OSU. Then worked briefly in Painesville, then back to Columbus for a year or two. Next, a year in Bucyrus until I got fired for exceeding standards. So I moved to Chicago for 5 1/2 years, got married, moved to Bangkok for a year or so. Then back to Columbus for a masters (and worked in Springfield while living in Columbus for 10 months). Followed by five years in Rochester, Minn. (Rochester thread coming soon). I've been back in Columbus 13 years now.

Ooops. Forgot a nearly two-month stint in Fort Collins, Colo., right out of college, when I went west to seek my fame & fortune, then came home broke, unemployed & humbled.

Grew up in Mansfield, OH

Went to college in Kent, OH (graduated in 91)

Then to Cleveland (and associated burbs)

In 1997-98 I lived in Beverly Hills, CA.  Outside of that year+, I've lived in the Cleveland area since graduating from Kent.

My closest friends are very negative about Cincinnati, especially since they came from the west side, so during my teens I became a little pessimistic myself. They conditioned me for a while. They're all exceptionally smart and confident so they moved on to other cities where they thought they could get more out of life and be more successful. My closest friends now go to school in Columbus, Chicago and Boston and they congratulate each other on getting out of Cincy. The belief that the hometown, particularly in the midwest, holds you back from opportunities or that somehow you become a victim of narrow perspective and are confined if you stay here. I think any city with a high number of transplants (certainly not Cincinnati) is going to feel vibrant and positive--I attribute it to first year dorms; the excitement of everything being new, and meeting new people. But looking back on it, my friendships with most of those random people I'd say hi to in elevators or went to clubs and frat parties with, didn't really amount to anything and it was all superficial.  However, If I didn't have a good reason to stay in Cincinnati right now, I admit I'd be a victim of the west side "get out" syndrome and leave Ohio for big city dreams like my closest peers.

Was it like that for you when you were in Harrison? I think people like you and I end up coming back here because we have a foundation here and we enjoy seeing how everything is evolving. Meeting people on this forum really opened my eyes, because they provide such a different (positive) perspective from what I was used to, which is great. :-D

Yes on the lake, near the damn golf course. The golf course may not be long for this world as developers want to build an office park and condos.

It is subjective, but I lived in Baton Rouge for a month.  I lived in Atlanta for much longer - 6.5 months in total split up over two different periods.  If you have to pack up and move your stuff then I consider that as living somewhere.  I had to do grocery shopping, laundry, and all the other normal things that you do once you move somewhere.

Chicago for the past 10 yrs

I've been working in Chicago for 10 yrs now but all of my family, and my wife's, are in Cleveland.  We make it back several times per year and are die hard Cleve sports fans.  Being away from Cleve has given us a new perspective on the area.  There seems to be a large number of people with a negative attitude offset by some with a hopeful tone.  Much different from Chicago for obvious reasons (size, economy, etc)  I'm hoping the Med Mart sparks a turnaround and jump starts Cleveland's re-birth so to speak.  I'm a firm believer that Cleve will find it's post rust belt identity and rebound in the next 5 to 10 years, which is why we're looking to move back and be with family. (got completely off topic here - sorry)

I didn't see this one either.

I grew up mostly in the suburb of Perry township between Massillon and Canton.  Sometimes my address was Massillon, and sometimes Canton.

Then I went to Kent State, but rarely left the campus. (architecture majors often had little time to leave the studio, let alone the campus)

Studied abroad for 4 months in Florence, Italy.

After graduation in 2000, I moved to Youngstown.

Born in Columbus

How many here can claim living in a place over 203 years old that is haunted and was an important stop on the Underground Railroad? I'll bet money I lived in the oldest place of anyone on here. If any of you have lived in a place over 200 years old, I'd like to hear about it...

What do you want, a gold star? lol!

Anyone that's lived in New England or Europe?

Oldest house I've lived in was in Cincinnati. Not sure how old it was but it was an Italianate building by River Road so I'm guessing 1860s-1880s. The house wasn't fun to live in at all, it had foundation problems and was off-level, the house had an awkward layout and basically everything went in a circle with the bathroom having two doors. We tried peeling the wallpaper off because it was all cracked and ended up scraping off about 10-12 layers of ugly wallpaper.

Pete Rose grew up in that neighborhood, that was about the only interesting thing.

^Renovate, please.  Don't let Italianates go to waste.  Odd layouts ARE what make them interesting.

^Renovate, please.  Don't let Italianates go to waste.  Odd layouts ARE what make them interesting.

Sedamsville, Lower Price Hill, and Camp Washington are completely untapped but considering their awkward location it just isn't a good place to renovate a house. OTR will be completely gentrified before those dead neighborhoods will be. :x

i am positive that the people at the admissions or student life offices steer students to that area due to SAFETY.  i hated living there, it was difficult not feeling like i would get run over riding my bike down heatherdowns.  none of the streets had any sidewalks.
