How do you post a pictures?? thanks

Pictures must be hosted - that is they must be stored on the web. You can use a web hosting service like pbase.com, or chances are that your ISP may provide some web space that you can use to store pictures as part of your account. If you right click on any of the pictures here and look at its properties you'll see where they are located and what site is hosting that picture. Pictures hosted thusly can then be posted by inserting them with the "img" command line.

Example:

{img}http://imagehost.com/user/randompic.jpg{/img}

except substitute these brackets {} with these:[]

And hey - if you're gonna post pics, go ahead and register first. That way you establish authorship and you exist as a "person" rather than an "entity".

And welcome!

^ To elaborate on OldMojo's excellent advice, pbase is the most popular an reliable host by far.

I believe that UrbanOhio may actually have some room left as well--for a small donation.

And if you need to go for free hosting, Photobucket usually works pretty well.

BTW...I second OldMojo's recommendation that you register here. :)

Thanks for all the help guys.. and yes i am steele 05 just forgot to sign on..lol

DO NOT USE YAHOO!!!

They will not allow hotlinking, and your pix will end up as red X's.

That all depends. I started out with a geocities site on Yahoo, not the cheapest one, and then upgraded to a Yahoo small business site, and both let me hotlink as much as I wanted.

^ Of course.  If you pay, they'll let you use the bandwidth.  If you use a free site, they will not.  I should have been more clear.

I tried to use the free Geocities as storage at first and it just didn't work.  They have pretty severe bandwidth restrictions even when viewing pages directly.

The very first website Chris and I started was on geocities, way back when they allowed hotlinking.  But shortly after we started it, they dissallowed hotlinking.  We moved to our own domain about a year after that.

^ Well, you get what you pay for.

Photobucket is awesome! It even generates the tags for you!

It's how much data transfer occurs with your files.  If, for example, you post a 100 KB photo somewhere and ten people view it (i.e. download it), that's 1 MB of bandwidth used.

Okay..I am NOT a computer wiz...so in VERY plain English...what do I do...I want to post a thread with pics...I transfered the pic I want to "photobucket".....now how do I put them on UO?  And I am assuming I cannot just snap pics, put them on my home computer and put them directly on UO?  I know..I am an idiot, but please take me through this step by step.....thanks you

1. Go to your photobucket page with your pics.

2. Click the text area that is you 'IMG Code' (it should automatically copy the text, you can copy it if you so choose though)

3. Now, when you are in your reply screen on UO, simply PASTE your 'IMG code' and that should do it.

This entire thing will be copied for you by Photobucket...it is very simple.  You just have to repeat that for each photo then.  I recommend previewing your post before you actually post it to make sure it worked alright.

You can also rightclick on any image and 'copy image location' and then go into UO and click the image button (underneath the underline feature) and paste the image location in between the IMG code.

Yeah, the fact that Photobucket automatically copies the IMG code for you is a BIG help, and a big timesaver--especially if you're posting 50 photos.

I just read today that MySpace just bought Photobucket.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is for images that might not be your own.

If you do not use photobucket, you should copy the url of the image (not the url for an actual webpage, just the image).

You should be able to view this url by right clicking on the image and then clicking on view image (firefox - don't remember what it says for IE).

To add that image to a thread here on UO, click on the button above that is between the Youtube button and the Globe button ([/img])

The place the url for the image in between the two sets of brackets.

If you use a service like Flickr, or Picassa, they will provide a link to the image for you. Follow the same directions.

Finally, you can upload a picture by clicking on the "Additional Options" link below the reply box.

It is located somewhere around here:

Click on browse, find the image you want to upload and follow these directions

Maximum attachment size allowed: 160 KB, per post: 17

Keep in mind that we strongly suggest that the attachments option only be used for a photo or two here and there, and not for long strings of multiple photos or for photo threads.

That won't work because it seems you have to be a member to view.

Are 767x1024 pics too big? I can't seem to find a happy medium for my flickr pics, they're either 375x500 or the latter size, which is pretty ginormous. Hayulp!!

Sorry just using this thread to practice. If this works it should be the cover of the old Ameritrust Center brochure.

KPFAC.jpg

Thanks for the tips all, looks like it worked.

^Are there techniques used for using the same photo in a different thread or do you simply repeat the same process in that thread?

I'm wondering if I repeat the process will that eat into my alloted bandwith/storage on Photobucket?

I wouldn't worry about that...I use Photobucket for all of my posting/image hosting needs.  I do quite a bit and have never had issues.  Post away!

So far in my limited use, I don't like Photobucket - too many ads and it freezes when I try to upload pics.  Are there any other good free sites?

Need I say anything anthing more? Try FireFox.

Even if you don't really want to switch browsers it's a good idea to have one or two alternatives around to see if it's a browser issue when you find a site not behaving like it should.  Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari to pick from.

I've been using IE8 with XP Pro for a while now, and it works OK for me. The only weirdness I encounter is when I'm trying to edit a long post and the text window gets all crazy after a while. Clicking the compatibility button makes the problem go away.

One tip for when you encounter that problem; copy what you've written to the clipboard (highlight with cursor & press CTRL+C), because when you click the compatibility button it may start you over with an empty text window. To restore what you copied to the clipboard, put your cursor in the text window and press CTRL+V.

Can Flickr be used to post pics here on UO?  I would prefer to use Flickr over Photobucket and would prefer not to upload pics to both sites.

Yeah it can, that's what I use.

Since they want you to link the photo back to the original location, I made this template.

[ url = http://www.flickr.com ][ img ] Photo Link [ / img ][ /url ]

The first link is the url from the main page for the photo.

The "photo link" space would be used for the second url you get from the download page.

Just get rid of the spaces and you're ready to post from flickr.

Ok, here's my issue. Just to qualify this issue - I'm sure it's something very simple and easy and that I have overlooked.

I am trying to create a new topic and post some pictures in that new topic. I do everything you're supposed to do and it starts loading my pictures. When it is done I am told that my session timed out while trying to post my topic. I am logged in, of course, while posting and I am logged in for 100 minutes. I am nowhere near that time time limit while posting.

What am I doing wrong?

^^^

I was trying to post some pics using Flickr as a host site (using the script above) and when I preview I just get the box with the red x, and when I click on it it takes me to the main page of my photos on Flickr.  When I preview should I be able to see the pic?  I tried using the instructions from Flickr as well with no luck.  I have my page set to public viewing, linking a smaller size...etc.  I am using IE9 as a browser (have both 32bit and 64 versions).  Any ideas would be helpful.  Thanks!

I'm having a hard time posting photos also. When I preview, sometimes it shows the photos and sometimes it doesn't. Once the issue was that the photo was too big so I resized them all. I'm  using windows pictures. I don't use an internet site for photos. I also tried my Corel to no avail.  Can I send the photos to my email and then post them from email?

That would probably work.  Or you could try to download a free photo editing program and make them smaller yourself.  This program works quite well - http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

I just created a flicker account so I think I will try that and see how it works. Thanks.

Any reason I can't add a photo as an attachment to a post?  Do I HAVE to upload it to flicker or other site?  I tried to attach a pic from both my phone and computer as attachment to post and it won't let me.

Edit - figured it out - max size is 200 KB - can we increase this to maybe 1 MB?  Or will that take too much space?

  • 7 months later...

Ok maybe this is a server issue, but we really need to consider updating the max size to upload a photo. I can't even upload a photo taken with my phone. Come on UO, you're stifling me! Ha.

I've increased it to 1.2mb per uploaded picture.

Awesome - thanks richNcincy[/member] !

Very good news. I often found it difficult cropping and compressing certain images when I did not want to actually host the pic on my flickr. Thankyou very much

Agreed - hopefully we will see more "real time" phone pics from people (e.g. walking by some development and snapping a few pics from phone and uploading to UO instantly).  I kind of hate the step of uploading to 3rd party website if I just want to post a pic or two.

For anyone still using Photobucket, this happened over the weekend:

Photobucket Breaks Image Links Across the Internet

Want embedded Photobucket images to continue loading in forums or on your website? Be prepared to pay $399 per year.

Embedding images on a website or in a forum post is a very common practice, with those images usually living on one of the many well-known image hosting websites. One such host is Photobucket, but a recent change to its subscription tiers means many millions of images across the Internet are no longer going to load outside of Photobucket's own site.

Photobucket 3rd party hosting broken image

The key feature of a Photobucket account we're talking about here is called "3rd Party Hosting." It allows you to embed images from Photobucket in another location on the Internet, e.g. in a forum post or on a website.

So what should we do? I have posted a lot of photo threads over the 9+ years I've been on UO and now all of them have broken links to photobucket. What other hosting sites can I use that are free and won't do what photobucket did? For my previous threads, will I have to transfer ALL of those photos to a new host site? Is there a better way to post images on this site that won't face this sort of dilemma?

You will have to pay their subscription fee to continue using PB.

I suggest using Flickr for future pics sharing. I've been using them for years with no problem

a how do i question -- when we are making photo threads, can someone explain the steps for previewing before we post them? thanks --

As long as this isn't a moderator only feature, there is a preview button on the far right side of the top toolbar.

I just started using Google Photos.  I was hoping to share from Google Photos and then use embedded links on UO, but thus far I can't figure out how to do it.  I did figure out how to get a direct link to the image (which was harder than I was expecting) - example below - but since it doesn't end in dot-photo-file-format, UO.com doesn't recognize it as a photo and therefore doesn't embed it.  (I did also try the "Insert image from url" option on "Other Media" in the lower right - no luck.)

Does anyone know how to embed shared images from Google Photos?

Here's an example link to a personal photo I shared:

I'm going to be so disappointed if I just spent 4 days uploading 50,000 photos to Google Photos and then can't figure out how to embed any of them here for sharing.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Well, I'm still looking for a native way to do it, but some guy on the internet created a script - I used this tool to create the link for the embedded image below.

Here's the tool:

https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/

I'd feel better if it was "native" sharing, but it does appear to link directly to a google site - here's the image link spelled out:

I am just making sure I'm not old, BB Code doesn't work here anymore right? So the old url process doesn't work anymore, right?

I do know I can go to the other media - > insert from URL, but just making sure I'm not missing something.

Just trying to maximize efficiency in hotlinking from Flickr...
