On Wednesday (March 26th, 2008) my friend and I took a trip up to Cleveland. We parked the car at a Park-and-Ride and took the train to the West 25th St. station in Ohio City. Here are the pictures that I took.

 

 

I really liked Ohio City and thought that the West Side Market was amazing. So many people were there and everything smelled wonderful. Next time I go up to Cleveland, I want to explore more of Ohio City.

Those of you that live in Cleveland, you all are so lucky. After this last trip, I can't wait until I have the opportunity to move to Cleveland. Also, I can't understand why I always hear such negative things about Cleveland. The neighborhoods in Cleveland, although not all are perfect, are diverse and filled with friendly people. Cleveland has one of the best transportation systems in the U.S. (although some say it is slow, at least you don't have to pay for parking or waste the day away looking for parking). Granted it needs more funding, but what U.S. transit system doesn't? Cleveland also has all of the cultural amenities anyone could ever need as well as many different dining options. I don't know much about the retail aspect of Cleveland, but it seems that things could only get better.

I love the skyline in the third shot. I don't think I've ever seen that angle, and I think it's Cleveland's best.

Nice pics. I really like the houses in Ohio City. If that business district is Ohio City, that's amazing. 3-5 story buildings. I like it.

We are fortunate in Ohio City to have a rigorous historic preservation system in place. A developer cannot tear down any structure within the Historic District without the approval of the Ohio City Design Review Committee. Thus, we have more historic architecture intact than any other neighborhood in Cleveland. Tremont went for new development at the expense of the historic integrity of that neighborhood. Check out our Victorian-era mansions on Franklin Blvd. and Clinton Avenue, which was the west side version of Euclid Avenue's Millionaires Row. I live in a simple but noble worker's cottage, built in 1860 and the backbone of our housing stock, but these are as important to us to preserve as the 1880's mansions. On your next trip up, be sure to check out Jay Ave, Whitman, West 31st, Mabel Ct, Franklin and Clinton.

ocbob, there has really been little demo in Tremont.  Nearly all the new development you see is on empty lots, mostly created during a wave of arson in the 70's and early 80's.

 

I half expect Ralphy and Randy to be running by chased by Flick from the Christmas Story in this pic.

In response to "X", I lived in the Tremont area almost 30 years ago, and remember when there were solid homes where those new townhomes are sitting. I will yield to the fact that fire damaged many beyond repair, but that was also happening in Ohio City when I moved here in 1982. Many homes were lost, but many more have been restored.
