I also see that most of the pictures of Cleveland were taken in the fall (last fall?). That's probably the best time of the year to take pictures in a Great Lakes city -- and the sun is out too!

 

Bummer that they only have half of my city of Lakewood photographed. I'll keep checking back.

I see they've also done Detroit and Pittsburgh. The street scenes in Pittsburgh are damn awesome. I love that city's terrific density.

I guess they're making the important cities streetview "correct" too ... When I was looking at Cleveland's, I would move forward or pan and it would skip to another block. lol.

This project started late last year, so KJP is correct.  The pilot areas were South Beach, Times Square and The Golden Gate Bridge.  In come cases, only a certain section of a city is "street viewable".  Example, in NYC only Manhattan is completely viewable, but only major throughfares are available in the outer boro's.  It appears that only cleveland an inner ring burbs are covered. 

 

I happened to be at home when they did my neighborhood in Harlem and it takes them about 45 minutes to do one block.  The car, with two mounted cameras, creeps down the street.  It was really interesting.

KJP you are correct.  There are two camera mounted cars, and four technicians on either side of the car..

 

I think they want to work in fall/spring as most of my block (in NY) is unviewable, because of shadows.  The results vary block by block.  If your street, block or house is incorrect, there is a link you can click to report incorrect information.

The street view is very recent as I just used Google last week and it wasn't there. For you folks in Cincy use http://maps.live.com/ click on "birds eye" and it will give a similar feature. I've been using that until now.

I just realized google on "mapped" on side of shaker blvd.  It looks as though they only did one side of the "boulevards" in the heights area.

 

I've checked out relatives houses and neighborhoods and  they look really nice.

OOhhh makes sense. I thought we had a film division; should be part of the chamber of commerce right? I wonder if they need permits for the videos they made for Google Earth. I always wanted to make one of those neighborhood videos.

That didn't get reported at all up here in Cleveland media (assuming it's even correct! ;)). The only way I heard about it was here on UO.

I can't get over how nice some of the remaining streetscapes are on the far eastside of the city.  I was drving through Glenville a few months ago and they're are some gorgeous side steet neighborhoods.

My grandparents and several aunts, uncles and cousins live in Glenville it's absolutely gorgeos!

 

It's so weird you brought that up, on Friday, my Grandfather told me that the reason they live in the house they live in, is because the had their first date walking along the gardens and my grandfather proposed to my Grandmother just a across the street.

Google's watching The Plain Dealer -- and most of the rest of Cleveland.

Google Maps, with a new feature that lets you tour much of greater Cleveland without leaving your office chair, might better be described as "ogle" maps.

I swear the PD has employees lurking here!  Just identify yourselves and stop reporting on stuff after we've discussed it here!

Yes!!! It's awesome news indeed! Cleveland is now featured on Google's streetview maps. Not sure when it actually debuted, but it was announced in the PD/Cleveland.com today (4-1-08). So far, we can see most of Cuyahoga County. They have not added western Cuyahoga or eastern Cuyahoga County. But it's got Lakewood, Cleveland, C. Heights, and down south all the way into Medina County. This was one of those things that when it debuted a while back with NYC, I was hoping to God that one day they'd do it in Cleveland. The news article also mentions that this is good news for Cleveland - it will let people explore the city more in depth and it was good news to see Cleveland be chosen as the first city in Ohio to have this on Google!!!

wow that is excellent. i not only got my building on street level but my apt too. it's blurry tho.

 

when you play with it you can see how the car that went by took the pics at certain points. so it's not a continuous pov -- there are jumps. but that doesnt matter you can look back or ahead and see everything.

Understood, and I agree it's uber-cool, especially for someone far away.  I wasn't referring to anything you said initially, I was just poking fun at the exaggeration of the reporter when he basically claimed that there was no reason to see anything in person if you could just see it in Google StreetView.

That's the old distribution office for the actual film rolls used at local theaters back in the analog days. Nowadays, they just e-mail the movies to the theaters.
