^Yeah, look at all that parking, green space, and the inspiring architecture! Is it any wonder why they left the crime ridden and desolate downtown for this suburban paradise?

Uggggggggh. No offense to those in suburbs, by the way.

Jpoptart, please.  No need to apologize.  Beachwood is bland and uninspiring.  My cousin lives just west of this.  Those split level 70s & 80's houses are hideous!

Jewish Community Federation lays off 25, faces nearly $3 million shortfall

Posted by Margaret Bernstein/Plain Dealer Reporter March 07, 2009 08:15AM

Facing declining endowments and donations, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland laid off 25 people Thursday and announced plans to trim $600,000 from its operating expenses.

In a letter e-mailed Friday to donors, federation officials explained that layoffs were their only choice, with this year's budget facing a shortfall of nearly $3 million.

That could have had a very different headline in the PD, with the ending and all.

Musky, what is that guy in your picture up to?

^ lol

He is throwing a molotov cocktail, except its a bunch of flowers. It's a stencil from graffiti artist Banksy. I think I need to recrop it though.

Whatever happened to plans of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland to leave downtown for the suburbs?

Plain Dealer file

The recession has slowed the Jewish Federation of Cleveland's move to the suburbs.

The leadership of Cleveland's Jewish community still plans to empty the downtown flagship and sail most of the troops out of the city, just not so fast. The recession is slowing a controversial move.

The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the chief planning and fund-raising arm of the region's Jewish community, is feeling the effects of the recession. After recent layoffs, about 95 people work in its landmark building on PlayhouseSquare.

On Sept. 11, 2008, federation trustees voted to move the bulk of the staff and operations east, to where its members are concentrated, ending a 105-year tradition of calling Cleveland home.

????

Maybe if they wouldn't have bought the building in Beachwood, the layoffs could've been avoided.....

exactly.

i believe the building was donated to them.

It says "purchase" in the article, but maybe the article is wrong.  I don't know.

The way I understood through a conversation with someone... the building would be given to them (or maybe sold at a ridiculously ridiculously low price, thus the term "purchase") if and only if they agreed to move their operations to beachwood.

are you suggesting that the PD makes mistakes?

This would be an amazing development ... a silver lining to the leadership of the Federation moving out of the city against the wishes of a majority of its membership. Sigh. I digress. Good news!

Jewish Community Federation Cleveland headquarters could become home to international welcome center: Global Village with Robert Smith

by Robert Smith, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer

Wednesday August 12, 2009

As it loses one cultural institution, downtown Cleveland could gain another.

Leaders of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, which plans to vacate its headquarters on PlayhouseSquare, are talking with people interested in opening an international welcome center.

Discussions are at the early stages, but backers of both the federation and the welcome center see possibilities ...

... For more information, please visit http://www.cleveland.com/globalvillage/index.ssf/2009/08/jewish_community_federation_cl.html

Note to Renee.... it's a lot easier for a city to thrive if you don't abandon it.

Snap.

I like the idea of an international welcome center, but I think it would be better placed in UC, or between UC and the Clinic.  That seems to be the nexus of our institutions that can be an international scale draw- UH, CC, CWRU.

Snap.

I think you mean  ;)

Family to provide $16 million so Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland can move to suburbs

By Associated Press

7:30 AM EDT, September 17, 2009

CLEVELAND (AP) — A family is offering $16 million to help a Cleveland Jewish organization move from downtown to the suburbs.

Fox.com

The foundation issued a short statement Wednesday, saying, "We believe that this development will enable the federation to strengthen its role in promoting the vitality of our Jewish community and will optimize its impact on Cleveland and elsewhere for decades to come."

That's unfortunate.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

It's funny how money can make a small group of people override the feelings of a significantly larger group....

I really don't get this. Seems really short sighted considering the tide of organizations is to move and invest in the core of cities, especially where they have long time roots.

So the direction of the future for this organization is being dictated by an 87 year old man.  That makes a lot of sense.  Good ridance to these people.

Seriously that was my first thought!

Either way...money money money talks.

So I guess now I know why the outcry of most of the Jewish population didn't carry much weight. We all have a vote, but only one counts...

Cleveland's Jewish community wants to welcome the world

By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer

January 23, 2010, 5:00PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After the Soviet Union collapsed, the region's Jewish community guided more than 6,000 Russian Jews to Northeast Ohio. Before the Russian wave, it helped to welcome refugees from Vietnam, gaining insight into the art of resettlement.

Now the Jewish community is poised to parlay its immigrant expertise once again. It's assuming a leadership role in the effort to create an international welcome center in Cleveland.

The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the chief planning and fundraising agency for the region's 80,000 Jews, is committing resources to a center designed to attract international talent and investment. It's offering expertise, start-up funding and the prospect of an enticing location -- its headquarters building on Playhouse Square.
