Posted April 3, 200817 yr I am going to start work at the Cleveland Clinic next week and I hate the parking I have. My question is... If i take the train to university circle... there is a shuttle to the clinic at 10900 carnegie... how far of a walk is that and is it safe at 12am or 6am?
April 3, 200817 yr It's about a 1,000-foot walk from the University Circle/Cedar Road rapid station to 10900 Carnegie. Probably the most dangerous part of the walk is crossing the complicated intersection of Carnegie, Cedar and Fairhill. Although I would be wary of my surroundings at midnight. There is no shuttle bus operating that late. You can take a bicycle with you on the train however. See this map for reference: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=10900+Carnegie+Ave,+Cleveland,+OH+44106,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=image "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 3, 200817 yr Thanks for the help. I thought the clinic had a shuttle that ran until 1245. I must've misread something.
April 3, 200817 yr One more question.... how safe is riding the red line at 12am??? i have to ride all the way back to lakewood
April 4, 200817 yr http://cms.clevelandclinic.org/documents/ShuttleBusSchedule.pdf White Line serves all stops from 7 pm until 12:45 am M-F, until 10 pm Sat and Sun. Not sure how safe I'd feel walking to the Rapid Station at night - I'd make real nice with the shuttle drivers and beg for a drop off at the Rapid Station. Question for more seasoned RTA users: Couldn't hayzell just pick up the #6 bus westbound on Euclid in front of the clinic [times 11:11 pm, 12:12 am], then either transfer to the Red Line at Tower City, or catch the #55 from Public Square to Clifton/Lakewood [times 11:40 pm, 12:40 am]? How safe is that in comparison to walking to the Rapid Station?
April 4, 200817 yr Thanks for information about the Clinic's shuttle buses. I wasn't aware of them. Hayzell's transit routing may well depend where in Lakewood he will live. If he lives in the southern or southeastern portion of Lakewood, then the Rapid is his best bet. If he lives anywhere near Clifton, across the northern part of Lakewood, then taking the #6 to the #55 will work. He could also take the #6 to the #75 if he will be living near the Gold Coast. Come to think of it, he could also take the #6 to the Red Line if he will be living in the south/east part of Lakewood. And.... He could take any of these routes if he brings his bicycle with him. As for safety, you'll run into more interesting people on Public Square than you will on Carnegie/Cedar at that time of the night. But there's more people around on Public Square. Either way, I wouldn't fear it. Be wary, but not worried. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 4, 200817 yr I think I'd be more comfortable for 5-10 minutes on Public Square waiting for a transfer than walking 5-10 minutes along Carnegie just because there's more activity on Public Square with buses/police/traffic and that stretch of Carnegie is pretty devoid of foot traffic at late hours. You would think the Clinic's shuttles would go the extra block or two to access the bus/rail hub at University Circle, but that would just make sense...(at least until the Silver Line is up and running)
April 4, 200817 yr thanks everyone for the advice. Im just nervous about learning the public transportation. also, my parking lot for the clinic sucks. Im working in the heart center and i have to park at 105th and cedar. Is it safe walking through the campus at night to get back to my car??? im a small town girl who isnt used to living in this type of environment. I mean my hometown is so small, we dont even have 1 traffic light!!!
April 4, 200817 yr Sorry Hayzell. I called you a "he" in my earlier post! I can see your concerns with safety. As a woman from a small town, all of this has got to be a bit intimidating. Walking at that hour of the night near Cedar is probably the least safe part of that area. I would not recommend it unless you can get an escort (security guard, co-worker, etc). That's at the edge of the Clinic's campus, closest to one of the most troubled parts of the city. If you're near Euclid, Carnegie or Chester, there's almost always traffic so you won't be alone. But there's little pedestrian traffic on Chester and even less on Carnegie. Most pedestrian traffic is on Euclid. I've lived in Lakewood for 12 years, been writing for a local newspaper for 15 years, and volunteering for a transit advocacy organization for 25 years -- I'm happy to help out in any way. Drop me a note on IM if you'd like. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Don't be ashamed or afraid to use it. :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 4, 200817 yr hayzell - I am not sure if this would help, but when I've decided to go to University from Lakewood on RTA I take the #6 Detroit Avenue bus and transfer to the Red Line at West Boulevard Rapid Station (Detroit/W98th). I have felt safe making this trip late at night - and I think it would be fine for a female - but I can't say much about walking around Cedar between the Clinic and the Rapid station.
April 4, 200817 yr Quick correction: The Detroit Avenue bus is the #26. And I'm not convinced that the West Boulevard station is safe late at night for a woman walking alone. April 6, 200817 yr For what it's worth, I am one of the few females on the board, and if I had your schedule, I would drive. Sucky parking lot or not - I agree with KJP just have someone walk you out to your car. JMO and I am a big supporter of RTA but the route you'd have to take to get home will be long and require waiting and/or walking in areas that not only aren't safe but are going to be a nightmare when we have bad weather, which is about 65% of the year. When you're beat at the end of a shift the last thing you're going to want to do is stand or walk in the freezing rain or snow through a not so great area just so you can get home. I think it would grow old pretty quick.
April 6, 200817 yr And I repeat - "I would imagine that the Clinic would offer some kind of security staff escort to walk you to your car. Don't be ashamed or afraid to use it." :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 6, 200817 yr another female here...I would not feel particularly safe at bus stops or rta ALONE late at night. I have been around the w65th station a few times after dark and generated more interest than I am comfortable. Daytime, I am fine alone all over....but not the middle of the night. The funny thing is we talk about the dangers of being female out on the street, but the crime stats I get appear to have more male victims- maybe they are more likely to be out and about. I would try and get the crime stats for w98th before making any assumptions about late night safety. that area is not exactly low crime.
April 7, 200817 yr The funny thing is we talk about the dangers of being female out on the street, but the crime stats I get appear to have more male victims- maybe they are more likely to be out and about. I think it's because women are more willing to use their brains and run or call for help. Men may try to stand and fight. And Cleveland weather isn't bad 65 percent of the time! Sheesh, where did you grow up, R&Rer? In a tanning bed? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Sheesh, where did you grow up, R&Rer? In a tanning bed? LOL. I don't visit tanning beds but I do love the sun, warmth and light. I am cold when it's below 65 and downright miserable when it's less than 50. You see why me living some place with free heat is a necessity. I remember going on a site visit to a resort with 2 of my bosses a few years ago. It was wintertime back home. Most of the winter I have a feeling of "I just can't get warm" that lasts throughout the winter." I even felt this way on the trip because winter at the resort location wasn't particularly warm with a lot of cold rain and wind (not as cold as here of course, but still cold to me). We went into the spa to check things out, I to the women's side and my bosses to the men's, and I sat down in the sauna. I remember sitting in there for so long that I thought they were probably wondering what had happened to me but I just couldn't leave because after a few minutes, I realized that I FINALLY FELT WARM. Really comfortable. Like I could have put my feet up and read the newspaper. As I left, I noted the temperature - it was 122 in the sauna.
