Posted April 10, 200817 yr Some rough spots, but generally quaint... This is a neat little civic corner with the post office and library of similar designs The Post Office The Library
April 10, 200817 yr Not bad. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 10, 200817 yr What gives it the edge is that you can get ripped and shredded locally if you're a "weightlifter"! Gotta love small towns.
April 10, 200817 yr Not bad at all. Interesting courthouse dome, but it doesn't fit the building very well in both style and scale.
April 11, 200817 yr You're probably right, but I don't mind the out-of-scale dome -- it seems normal to me since I grew up with that courthouse. Built in 1882. The addition was built about 10 years ago, and is indeed well-matched and sensitive to the courthouse. Phila (and neighboring Dover, my hometown) have done a nice job with additions to public buildings, including some schools. (Alas, they have not done a nice job with much of anything else.) The attractive Phila library has an addition to the rear that mirrors the main building. The post office next door was modeled on a place in that other Philadelphia -- Independence Hall. The Knisely building is, I believe, the former Elks club, nicely redone as the new city hall.
April 11, 200817 yr Santa looks like a real bad ass. Library and post office look nice. What's the story with all the quaker references? Quaker Foundation... Quaker Theater...
May 30, 201411 yr I was in New Philadelphia yesterday and noticed that the original porcelain enamel steel facade is being uncovered on the Quaker Theater. Before (as above) Yesterday (in progress)
May 30, 201411 yr Is that considered Art Deco? Famous motocross racer Brock Sellards is also from New Phila.
May 30, 201411 yr As well as the Quaker facade restoration, public art is being installed downtown. Local high school art students have painted benches and trashcans changing the brutalist feel of downtown. Also new LED lighting has been placed on the building which houses the "Welcome to Our City" sign. As a resident of New Philadelphia I see these small changes making an impact.
May 30, 201411 yr hey the fresh prince is from here too "new philadelphia born and raised on the playground is where i spent most of my days.." he went on to hollywood. go prince!
May 30, 201411 yr I knew nothing about that facade. Maybe it was there when I was a kid going to movies there in the 60s, but I don't remember it.
May 30, 201411 yr That would be about when I used to go there. I guess i just wasn't attuned to architectural detail then.
May 30, 201411 yr Is that considered Art Deco? I guess it might be Art Moderne. yes. built in 1940. http://www.quakercinema.com
July 22, 201410 yr Sure do like the "Welcome to our City" sign. Did you happen to be around at night and get a photo (assuming it is working)?
