New system will handle calls about potholes, dogs

As early as September, residents and business owners will be able to use a new phone and Internet system to report a new pothole, barking dogs, a newly vacant home, broken equipment at city parks and every nuisance in between.

 

People will be able to dial 311 on their phone or visit a Web site to reach a new central call center to report neighborhood problems. The complaint will be referred to the appropriate department and be given a work order number so city employees and even the original caller can track progress on resolving the complaint.

 

City workers are increasingly equipped with laptop computers and mobile data terminals that are connected to city computers and databases. It is possible that city workers out on the streets will be able to respond within minutes to requests for service when they are only blocks away from the source of a problem.

It seems that this service is now somewhat active:

 

On Monday, Cleveland began testing its long-anticipated 3-1-1 telephone system.

 

Once fully operational, the service will route nonemergency calls to the appropriate City Hall department or employee. Angry about that monster pothole on your way to work? You can dial 3-1-1. Wondering why your street hasn't been plowed yet? Dial 3-1-1.

Was looking for the Cleveland 311 site info today and this thread also showed up in a Google search.   Since it hadn't been used recently, I thought I'd bump it up to the top with this story that I also read.  What stands out to me is the arrogance of the Jackson Administration when it comes to media availability!
