PJ's regularly flirt with these speeds because they usually fly much higher than commercial traffic.

I once took a G650 from Seattle to Minneapolis in 1:45.

Airlines Required To Give Automatic Cash Refunds For Canceled And Delayed Flights

The Biden administration is defining a significant delay as lasting at least three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international ones.

Solar power canopy at JFK long-term parking lot to help power AirTrain, nearby homes

By Ben BrachfeldPosted on April 23, 2024

Solar panels are also expected to be installed on newly-reconstructed Terminals 1 and 6 at JFK, while a solar array already exists atop LaGuardia Airport and over a parking lot at Newark Airport.

The Port Authority and the New York Power Authority worked in partnership to contract TotalEnergies to construct the solar canopy.

“Building New York’s largest solar carport at JFK significantly advances the Port Authority’s goal of reducing our agency’s carbon footprint to net zero while sharing the benefit of our historic investments at the airport with neighboring communities,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.

I feel like this is going to be fought somewhat by the airlines.

We've bailed out the airlines out three times in the last 22 years.

It's enough. They need to be nationalized.

No, we just need more alternatives -- starting with more competition on short routes from high speed rail!

Based on customer satisfaction surveys of 550 of the world’s airports, the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2024 just named Doha Hamad Airport the best airport on the planet!

It knocked last year’s winner SingaporeChangi off the top spot, which was relegated to second place but has won 12 times in the past – pretty impressive from Hamad.

Pan Am will return to the skies in 2025 (for a special flight)

By Lilit Marcus, CNN

In travel news this week: A beloved former airline is making a brief – and expensive – victory lap, France celebrates its national holiday, and we spotlight a Pacific Northwest destination that should be on your travel list.

Flying high

Pan Am is synonymous with glamorous travel. Although the airline stopped flying in 1991, the name still emanates nostalgia and symbolizes an era before the words “overtourism” or “selfie stick” existed.

Now, there’s a chance to fly Pan Am again, provided you have deep pockets. Pan Am Brands, which owns the former airline’s licensing rights, will fly a special Pan Am-branded private jet on a 12-day trip from New York City in June 2025.

The “Tracing the Transatlantic” itinerary has stops in Bermuda, Lisbon, Marseille, London and Foynes, Ireland, all places that have significance to Pan Am and were on the airline’s old routes. The price tag? A cool $59,950 a person.

Not sure if this is the right topic, but ... the State of Maryland has proposed an excise tax of 75 cents on each delivery by Fedex and UPS in the state.  As a flat rate, it will be more impactful on low value shipments than high.  It will be interesting to see what effect the tax will have on the volume of shipments.

If Maryland does it, can the other states be far behind?

Would this also apply to Amazon? Assuming yes, this sounds like a great policy. Especially if USPS is exempt. Mon-USPS low volume shipping should be discouraged - there are significant externalities for wasteful low volume shipping. Vehicular traffic and pollution being the biggest problems.

The article I read did not mention Amazon, barely mentioned Fedex and UPS; it concentrated on the almost 50% hike in income taxes also planned.  Wouldn't USPS have to be exempt because of McCulloch v. Maryland (the state that never learns)?

Edit:  It's all retail deliveries except grocery store and feminine hygiene products.

Southwest is going to start charging bag fees. Historically there were only two reasons I flew SW - no change fees and no bag fees. I don’t think the legacy carriers ever reinstated change fees since COVID, and now that SW charges bag fees, I don’t think I’ll be flying them as much. At least we’ll be able to start having assigned seats soon, so that’s an improvement.

https://www.flyertalk.com/articles/southwest-becomes-last-airline-to-drop-free-checked-bags-for-everyone.html?utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=

Southwest Becomes Last Airline to Drop Free Checked Bags for Everyone

The changes will take effect for flights purchased on or after May 28, 2025. While Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and Business Select travelers will continue to get two free checked bags on their flights, all others may be paying for at least one piece of luggage.

Rapid Rewards A-List members, Rapid Rewards credit cardholders, and “other select customers” will all get one free checked bag when flying with Southwest. All others will be forced to pay for their first and second checked bag, subject to weight and size limitations. Southwest did not announce the price for the first and second checked bags, or what the weight and size limitations would be.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

I’m kind of surprised the whole checked bag fee hasn’t been restructured by somebody. These days, everybody wants to carry on, and most airlines practically beg people to check their bag at the gate. I’m surprised nobody started offering 1 free checked bag and a charge to carry on.

I agree. Enplaning and deplaning would go a lot faster if fewer passengers had a carry on bag. And it would also reduce congestion in the seating area at the gate.

Nobody has done it because it would be a disaster PR move and a logistical nightmare. Checked bag lines are already outrageous lots of the time I couldn’t imagine even more people added to the queue of long lines that would normally just carry on. One of the core reasons people carry on (including myself) is they don’t trust the airlines with their bag, carry on eliminates the risk of your bag being lost or taken on accident. I personally put all my expensive clothes, high valuables in my carry on. Also the whole checking it at the gate option gets very messy and disorganized especially when deboarding it’s a mess with bags and passengers lining the jet bridge sometimes. I would assume some airlines have certainly thought about charging for carry on as I’m sure it has the potential at least at first to generate lots of money but none are foolish enough to go first it would be the competitions dream.

Southwest charging for carry-ons is fair - before, people without carry-ons deserved a fair reduction - so this just evens the playing field.

But screwing over passengers on refunds and changed tickets is infuriating and petty.

Huh? Southwest isn’t talking about charging for carry-ons, they are going to start charging for checked bags. And the policies on ticket changes aren’t substantially changing - you still have a full year to use travel credits on most fares, and six months on the cheapest fares.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Whoops. St Patty's brain error. Plus fair vs fare.

Hochul announces $160M in upgrades to Q70 LaGuardia Link bus line

With plans for the LaGuardia AirTrain and Astoria subway extension officially shelved, Governor Kathy Hochul, the Port Authority, and the MTA on Tuesday unveiled a $160 million proposal to enhance the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus line, promising faster, more frequent, and more reliable service between the airport and transit hubs in Jackson Heights and Woodside.

Welcome to the Trump-lead federal workplace.    Is anyone shocked that this is happening?   I'm sure most of the federal workforce is on edge...and tower controllers see way more stress than the rank and file.   Also interesting that a Google search for this yields a few blog hits, and this one local ABC affiliate reporting it.  Nothing to see here...
