This will shake up the low cost carriers a bit.  I've flown both and prefer Spirit over Frontier.  CVG has a large Frontier presence, but zero Spirit flights.  Hopefully this results in more flights overall for the soon to be merged airlines.

They came into CVG guns blazing a couple years ago with a ton of flight routes and options. It seems like they have contracted quiet a bit and Allegiant has been eating there lunch at CVG. If the merger happens its really only ORD and FLL are the two airports Frontier doesnt service out of CVG that are Spirit operating bases. Every other city they fly to Spirit also flies.

Agreed! I’ve noticed the same thing. Frontier used to be very active at CVG, now it’s seems they’ve fallen off and Allegiant is now humming. Weirdly I don’t even see any frontier planes at gates anymore.

A few years ago at CLE, Frontier added non-stops to several west coast cities - Seattle, San Francisco, LA and San Diego.   However, after a short time (less than a year?) most or all of them were discontinued.  Apparently, if they don't get the numbers they expect right out of the gate, it's buh-bye for those flights.

Taking off again: New York air travel ascends to near pre-pandemic levels over midwinter break

By Kevin Duggan
Posted on March 6, 2022

Air travel in the New York City area took off around the February midwinter break, coming closest to 2019 levels since the pandemic began.

Passenger volumes were up to 98.3% of pre-pandemic levels for Feb. 18-24 compared to the same time three years ago at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s three largest airports.

Officials with the Transportation Security Administration counted more than 1.15 million travelers during that time period, compared to 1.17 million in the same timeframe in 2019.

LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport even served more travelers than pre-COVID, at 107.7% and 104.5% of 2019 levels respectively, while John F. Kennedy International Airport — the busiest of the three travel hubs – was still down at 89.3%.

Delta airplanes line up at JFK Airport on Dec. 26.
REUTERS/Jeenah Moon

paraphrasing a post i saw for impressive sea-tac news:

Sea-Tac Airport had a big day march 3 -- the ceremonial (pre)opening of its new International Arrivals Facility.

The old facility is a bottleneck, limited to 1,200 inbound passengers per hour at customs, in a cramped, inefficient facility. International-capable gates were limited to the South Satellite terminal. This became a big problem as traffic surged from about 1,200,000 inbound international passengers per year in 2010 or so to 2,869,935 in 2019. Airlines were hitting the upper limit.

The new facility includes a bridge from the South Satellite to the new entry hall alongside Concourse A, plus sterile corridors from several of the A gates so they can serve international routes. The arrival hall is huge, at 450,000 sf. Here's a tour and here's the Port of Seattle project page.

How much airlines will shift to Sea-Tac as an international hub? they did 5,727,899 combined international passengers in 2019. Will that edge up slowly, or really take off? Signs suggest a real surge. We're way behind San Francisco, Vancouver, and others. But will seattle gain some ground? Will the 5.7m turn into 7, 8, or more?

Here are international destinations for Summer 2022 -- six in East/Southeast Asia, two on the Arabian peninsula, seven in Canada, six in Mexico or Central America, and seven in Europe, totaling I believe 43 flights per day. Some like Beijing and Bangalore are still out of commission since Covid.

most people, hell everybody, prefers the new lga, but i like the old one fine.

i thought they should have closed it and expanded stewart instead, but cuomo caters hard to long island suburbanites, so there was no chance for that.

i also liked mueller to bergstrom, but austin definitely did need a bigger, modern airport.

A Look Inside JFK’s Shiny New Terminal 8

Featuring swanky lounges and concierge-style check-in areas.

BY JESSICA PUCKETT

December 1, 2022

Close on the heels of LaGuardia Airport unveiling its gleaming new Terminal B project earlier in 2022, New York City is getting another revamped airport terminal: A renovated Terminal 8 building opened on December 1 at John F. Kennedy International airport. The spacious new building adds 7,000 square feet of space to the old facility and features upgrades like a redesigned premium check-in area and three stylish new airline lounges.

The new facility is home to American Airlines and British Airways, both of which spent $400 million on the construction project that included relocating British Airways from Terminal 7 to Terminal 8 to be closer to its Oneworld Alliance partner airlines (one of which is American). Additional partner carriers Iberia and Japan Airlines will be moving into the new terminal as well.

Launched in partnership with Smarte Carte, the services are staffed by employees throughout the terminal dressed in easily recognizable uniforms, and guests can find storefronts throughout the building to access these offerings as well. Together, these services will provide guests with a fast, convenient way to customize their travel experience and reach out for assistance, all at a single source.

JFK Airport To Open Their New Terminal In 2026

November 28, 2022·1 min read

John F. Kennedy International Airport will be introducing a new terminal in 2026, Terminal 6. The terminal will be used for flights by JetBlue Airways. After the completion of Terminal 6, JFKAirport is expected to open two more terminals to give customers the ultimate airport experience.

$4.2 Billion Project

This isn’t the first Terminal 6 for JFK Airport, as the original terminal was demolished in 2011. The new terminal is a $4.2 billion renovation that promises to make Terminal 6 the most beautiful terminal in the world.

Although JetBlue has first dibs on the initial gates, the Terminal is expected to be shared with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.

Port Authority to host second autonomous vehicle demonstration at JFK Airport as it looks to the future of public transit

By Bill Parry
Posted on March 2, 2023

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will take a second look into the future of ground transportation at JFK Airport in June.

The bi-state agency and Ohmio, a leading New Zealand-based autonomous mobility company, announced on Feb. 28 that they will host the country’s first three-vehicle platooning demonstration at a U.S. airport. The Port Authority also hosted a demonstration of two eight-passenger electric autonomous shuttles in a platoon at JFK in October to simulate how such technology could serve passengers in the future.

The Ohmio demonstration will focus on using eight-passenger driverless shuttles in a three-vehicle platoon on a closed road segment at the JFK Long Term Parking Lot. They will travel very closely together without any physical connection.

LaGuardia AirTrain proposal officially canned by Port Authority, suggests airport shuttle bus instead

By Ben Brachfeld
Posted on March 13, 2023

The Port Authority on Monday hammered the final nail in the coffin of the controversial proposal to build an AirTrain to LaGuardia Airport.

The move comes more than a year after Gov. Kathy Hochul halted the plan, a pet project of her disgraced predecessor Andrew Cuomo, and commissioned a study for alternatives. On Monday, the Port Authority’s “expert panel” released its final report, shunning the long-contentious AirTrain and declaring the best option to be a new shuttle bus between the airport and the end of the N/W subway line in Astoria, Queens.

13,000 Solar Panels Will Help Power JFK Airport’s ‘New Terminal One’

By Jessica Stewart on March 18, 2023

New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport is getting an upgrade. Its New Terminal One, which started construction in 2022, was designed with both beauty and sustainability in mind. The $9.5 billion project includes a microgrid to power the terminal. This new power system is an innovative answer to the energy crisis and would allow the New Terminal One to operate without the city's power grid during emergencies.

The microgrid will produce 11.34 megawatts of electricity from rooftop solar, gas fuel cells, and battery storage. On the roof, 13,000 solar panels will set a record as the largest solar array in New York City and at any U.S. airport terminal. To put things into perspective, the microgrid will produce enough electricity to power 3,570 American homes for an entire year.

lga didnt win for best airport, just best new terminal. i can’t imagine how many new terminals there currently were, maybe the competition was stiff lol.

but it is a quite nice new terminal.

my grumble remains lga should be a historical relic and this award for a big new stewart terminal and hi speed train connection. but unfortunately cuomo always bent over backwards for his long island fanclub, so now lga is forever.
