Parma Plans "Little Ukraine" Neighborhood

04-11-2008 6:08 AM

(Parma, OH) -- Parma city officials want to make part of their city an ethnic neighborhood to rival the likes of Cleveland's Little Italy. They'll use federal grants to begin turning a two-mile stretch of State Road into a Ukrainian Village. The area includes two Ukrainian Orthodox churches, hundreds of residents of Ukranian descent and dozens of businesses owned by or catering to the community. Parma city officials want to rebuild storefronts, create pedestrian-friendly landscaping and public art projects.

Cool.  I like parts of Parma, and if they learn to trade on the funky, family owned businesses they have along streets like State, they could have something really great.

Parma, just be yourself.  I was surprised to read that 10% of Parma's population is foreign born.

why not? it's a good marketing idea.

why not? it's a good marketing idea.

I wasn't saying that they shouldn't do it. I think that they should do it. I just don't want them to try to turn it into some Ukrainian Disneyland thing. Do it well, don't try to be something that you are not. I do think that this is something that would turn out better if they don't spend too much money.

I love ethnic enclaves, but only if they are started by that ethnic group and then its development, expansion or refinement is supported by a governmental body. I don't like it nor think that it works when a governmental body tries to create an ethnic enclave and then hopes an ethnic group shows up to make it so.

oh i know, i didnt mean anything you said i just meant they should do it.

to your worry: disneyfication is the last thing i'd worry about at this point. let's see what they can do with this idea first. as it stands now, i think parma warrants enough to at least make some effort to market a ukrainian neighborhood. any ethnic enclave is great publicity for the whole region.

The press release you posted seems to imply that the people, businesses, and churches are already there, no?  I got the impression that Parma is just trying to make a historically Ukrainian area of town more visible as such.

Kramer:  Ha ha, the Ukraine.  Do you know what the Ukraine is?  It's a sitting

duck.  A road apple, Newman.  The Ukraine is weak.  It's feeble.  I think it's

time to put the hurt on the Ukraine.

Ukrainian:  I come from Ukraine.  You not say Ukraine weak.

Kramer:  Yeah, well we're playing a game here, pal.

Ukrainian:  Ukraine is game to you?!  Howbout I take your little board and smash

it!!

What two mile stretch are they talking about?  I assume it is around the Snow Rd intersection...I am interested in seeing what they have in store...

^Downtown, welcome to UO!

I must say that is the most unique initial post that I've come across.

Parma- Cleveland-area Ukrainians know to come to State Road for ethnic specialties such as homemade kielbasa, imported tortes and savarin cake.

Now city officials want to make sure the rest of the world knows, too.

Parma is investing at least $240,000 from federal grants over the next three years to turn a two-mile stretch on State Road into a Ukrainian Village. The city also has requested $142,000 from the state.

Parma to honor Ukrainians by dedicating 'village' in city

Posted by Robert Smith/Plain Dealer Reporter September 17, 2009 07:04AM

It's beginning to look a little like Kiev in a bustling corner of Parma, and local Ukrainian-Americans are getting ready to call it their own.

A two-mile stretch of State Road already offered Old World meat markets, gold-domed churches and Ukrainian credit unions. The city of Parma paid for the newly painted murals, some vibrant with the golden sunflowers symbolic of Ukraine.

Cleveland area to step it up May 2 as communities plan rival Polish Constitution Day parades

CLEVELAND (AP) — Anyone who loves a parade will be treated to a pair of dueling ones May 2 in the Cleveland area. Rival parades marking Polish Constitution Day will be held in the city and its biggest suburb, Parma.

Polish-Americans in Cleveland's Slavic Village are upset that the annual parade was moved to Parma, so they're planning they're own celebration.

The Cleveland parade gets the blessing of the mother church of the Polish Catholic community, the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus. The Parma parade two hours later will feature the Parma, Valley Forge and Normandy high school bands and TV personality "Big Chuck" Schodowski.

Parma has a couple of things going on and I didn't see any topics in general for Parma so if I missed it please put it in the appropriate thread.

Local landmark closing

Parma driving range will close doors

PARMA, Ohio - The huge golf ball that can be seen from Brookpark Road in Parma will soon be gone.  It's been at the Brookpark Golf Range for some 30 years. But the actual driving range has been there even longer, more than 60 years.

The golf range is  closing May 3. The popular Dragon Gate Restaurant in front of the range will have to move. The restaurant is looking for a new location.

The VA clinic is expected to create at least 150 jobs.  A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to happen in May.

Parmatown Mall plans five new outbuildings as part of revitalization plan

May 05, 2010, 7:57AM

PARMA A plan to expand Parmatown Mall has been unveiled.

RMS Investment Corp. — the Cleveland firm that manages Parmatown — wants to construct five freestanding commercial buildings in the parking lot around the mall.

Three of the buildings would face West Ridgewood Drive and two would face Day Drive. They would measure between 2,600 and 9,700 square feet.

Nick Rudy, general manager of Parmatown, said the mall is talking to national retail chains about leasing space in the new buildings.

Parma VA Clinic

MKC Associates - Some pictures on there as well, but nothing spectacular.

This project features the design of a new 75,000 sq. ft.,full service, medical clinic. In addition to general medical services, the building will feature many specialized medical procedures including imaging, radiology, pharmacy, pulmonary, neurology, optometry, physical therapy, urgent care and women's health services.

The facility is part of an initiative to increase the number of medical facilities for Armed Services Veterans. The building is designed to LEED Silver level and is extremely energy efficient with its active and passive options

Went to go hit some golf balls tonight at the driving range that was located on Brookpark between Ridge & Tiedeman across from Golden Corrall.  Saw it was all fenced off with heavy equipment & construction trailers.  Anyone know what this is going to be?  I always thought that was awfully valuable real estate to be a driving range...

Interesting.  I know that little range off I-77 between Fleet & Harvard has been really busy all summer.

Six outbuildings are part of plan to redevelop Parmatown Mall

http://www.cleveland.com/parma/index.ssf/2013/01/six_outbuildings_are_part_of_p.html#incart_river_default

The new owner of Parmatown Mall plans to construct six outbuildings along West Ridgewood Drive as part of the mall’s redevelopment.

Five of the buildings would stand in a tight west-to-east line starting at Ames Road. The sixth would stand apart from the others, in front of the Parmatown strip center, closer to Ridge Road.

The buildings would stand just 30 feet or so from West Ridgewood.

Businesses – including Panera Bread and a lending institution – have already expressed interest in leasing the outbuildings. Chipotle Mexican Grill may move its restaurant from the Parmatown strip center into one of the new buildings.

--------

I grew up in the area and I am well aware there is already too much vacant retail, so on face value this seems nuts.  However, if this is tied to a longer term plan to tear down the mall and old Macy's building I can see how having new businesses along Ridgewood can help shape the new development.

Should the Parmatown Mall redevelopment have it's own thread? It looks like the new owner is going to actively transform the site. Just wondering.

Dick's Sporting Goods and former Macy's will come down in Parmatown Mall

http://www.cleveland.com/parma/index.ssf/2013/02/dicks_sporting_goods_and_forme.html#incart_river_default

PARMA The portion of Parmatown Mall that contains Dick’s Sporting Goods and the former Macy’s will be demolished as part of the Parmatown redevelopment.

Dick’s will move into a new building — possibly one of six outbuildings planned for West Ridgewood Drive — on the Parmatown site.

The section of the mall containing the food court and JCPenney will remain standing and will be remodeled.

I hope they engage the YMCA with this project to build a more modern/larger Ridgewood facility.  This would be a great opportunity to engage in some partnership with the Y like Lakewood did.

The crazy thing is they bulit that Dicks store about 7 years ago...

Ain't that America....

Sad, but true.  At least they're not developing all of this in a field at Sprague and Ridge, and their actually re-developing an old/out-dated shopping center.  I give Parmatown credit, they have gone through several re-models and updating.

  • 7 months later...

And it's going to remain a one floor development... No residential, no office space, just refurbishing an obsolete mall in a town with plenty of half empty strip plazas.

If I could pick up Crocker Park and plop it down in place of Parmatown I would in a heartbeat.

Parma City Council approves Parmatown Mall redevelopment agreement

PARMA, Ohio – City Council on Monday unanimously approved an agreement with Phillips Edison & Co. for the redevelopment of Parmatown Mall into the Shoppes at Parma.

The agreement requires Phillips Edison to make $56 million in improvements to the property by May 2017. In exchange, the company will be exempt from paying property taxes on this increased valuation for 30 years, with this money used to partially fund the project, a practice known as tax increment financing (TIF).

Saint Francis de Sales School Shutting Doors After 75 Years of Service

Published by Eugene McCormick on January 14, 2014 - 12:28am

Faced with dwindling enrollment Saint Francis de Sales Elementary School in Parma is closing its doors at the end of the school year. The announcement was made at mass on Sunday. Saint Francis de Sales had educated students through eighth grade for the past 75 years but enrollment in the school has fallen to only about 100 students in recent years.

The funny thing is no one is ever going to call it anything but "Parmatown".  Jacobs Field squared.

Catholic schools are merging even faster than Lennon tried to make the churches do.  Maple Heights used to have four either in it or on its borders and now they've merged into two.

Parmatown Mall Macy's to be demolished next week

PARMA, Ohio – The former Parmatown Mall Macy’s has a date with the wrecking ball next week.  Demolition of the 305,000-square-foot building will begin at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 29 as part of the ongoing transition of the property into The Shoppes at Parma, owner Phillips Edison & Co. announced Wednesday.

I love this project.  It's always great to see an old neighborhood reinvent itself.  May not be urban, but this section of Parma never was.  Hopefully development along the ridge and state road corridors can provide for an urban experience.

Grew up going to Parmatown and I saw it's fall after Southpark was built.  I am glad it's getting another chance at being something worthwhile.
