Fueled for growth

In the high-stakes world of jet engine development, GE Aviation takes big risks

Cincinnati Business Courier - May 26, 2006

by Lucy May

Senior Staff Reporter

Every business venture is a bit of a gamble.

At GE Aviation in Evendale, the stakes are bigger than most.

The company, after all, invested $1 billion to develop its new GEnx engine. And its latest engine under development -- a quieter and more fuel-efficient model for narrow-body jets -- could require an investment of as much as $2 billion in research and development before it hits the market in 2015, said Scott Donnelly, CEO of Evendale-based GE Aviation, a unit of General Electric.

Build upscale communities near freeways and fortune 500 companies are all over your nuts.

Ya know, it kind of boggles my mind how somebody from the city isn't trying to court these guys into downtown unless all of GE hierarchy live out that way and are just trying to save themselves on the gas situation.    A different article said something about this being Engineering and other office type positions.  No manufacturing.    I don't know, maybe a 5th & Race candidate!!

Yep yep it's just like the situation with Blue Ash.

Just another reason we have too many municipalities.

^yup, and All competing AGAINST each other.

Nothing like giving a tax break to a company that is just moving jobs around the metro.

^Isn't that a crock?

10-year, 100% tax abatement.

That's insane

What about them rewarding the companies that's been there for 60+ years or so?

West Chester is getting to commercialized...

west chester poaches

Nothing like giving a tax break to a company that is just moving jobs around the metro.

better than leaving the metro for greener pastures...or is it?

which would you prefer?

Just an aside..

GE is moving a bunch of good jobs from Louisville to the light bulb research hq in Cleveland.

These jobs aren't leaving the region. The whole reason they are here is the gigantic aircraft engine factory that is one of the premier manufacturing sites in the country.

GE won't be here long because there will be no more airlines or start up airlines to buy engines.

^ I think there will still be airplanes and airlines for a long time. The business models are just going to change.

The US Air Force isn't going to stop flying and neither is UPS. The question is how will regular airlines respond. They have only just begun to squeeze fuel efficiency out of aircraft engines in a way that could be useful in a higher fuel environment.
