August 15, 200816 yr So does this mean that GE will close the existing facility just north of Lockland? GE chooses West Chester By Dave Greber, Dayton Daily News, August 14, 2008 WEST CHESTER TWP. — A loss for two Ohio cities has become this community's gain. GE Aviation announced Thursday, Aug. 14, that it chose West Chester to house a portion of its $13.2 billion operation over competing cities Evandale and Springdale. Earlier Thursday, county commissioners gave their approval on a 100 percent, 15-year property tax abatement, the same deal offered by the Hamilton County cities. August 15, 200816 yr So does this mean that GE will close the existing facility just north of Lockland? Not the assembly plant! They will vacate the office buildings in a complex in Springdale off Princeton Pike. http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=39.279731~-84.472139&style=h&lvl=17&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=7969046&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1 Essentially, they will be leaving one suburban, ashalt dominated complex for another. Honestly, I expected nothing less. Heaven forbid, they transition into the 21st century with a modern building in an urban setting. (I am still bitter, because this would have been perfect for Lower Price Hill (Metro West http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,6201.0.html) and could have really taken the streetcar and high tech jobs debate to a new level with Engineering jobs for that area. I am refraining from criticizing any Ham Cty. or city officials right now out of respect, but this could have been big had officials been more involved and concerned. It seems they almost handed this over to Butler Cty.) The Evendale plant is pretty safe!!! I know a few people who work for GE (Evendale) and they all say that some of the stuff buried on that site is enough to force GE to stay there forever and keep their PR on the up and up. There has been alot of nasty stuff done there over the years.
August 15, 200816 yr I've heard similar things. Any major military plant in operation since WWII is going to have all kinds of crazy stuff buried on it - certainly stuff that would cause all kinds of crazy cancer. This just makes me so mad. Especially the way the Butler Cty folks are acting like the just got this from Silicon Valley or something rather than their neighbors.
August 15, 200816 yr ^Springdale would still recieve much less than if the jobs were in their community with their full tax rate. West Chester Townshit is going to shop around until they are promised the highest percentage of the revenues, though.
August 15, 200816 yr They deserve to be stonewalled. This would be a good time to force them to become a city.
August 15, 200816 yr What city will join township in GE agreement? By Dave Greber Staff Writer Friday, August 15, 2008 HAMILTON — Commissioner Gregory Jolivette is urging West Chester Twp. officials to form a partnership with a Butler County city for an economic tool integral to the deal with GE Aviation. The $13.2 billion company announced late Thursday, Aug, 14, they would consolidate three offices — two in Springdale and one in West Chester Twp. — to a pair of new facilities to be built at the former Queen City Sports Complex off Cincinnati-Dayton Road. August 15, 200816 yr What city will join township in GE agreement? Local officials are lauding GE's decision, saying it will be a boon to West Chester Twp. and the county, as it's expected to rake in roughly $140 million each year in payroll from the company's 1,400 employees to be housed at the new buildings by this time next year. Hmm 140 million? Is that the amount that can be taxed , because they said they would rake in that much money, as if that much money would go into the county coffers or something. I doubt all the workers live in Butler county.

February 23, 200916 yr Three communities to share GE Aviation tax revenues http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/02/23/daily9.html GE Aviation’s plan to move 1,400 jobs to West Chester has sparked an initiative by three communities to share its tax revenues. West Chester, Fairfield and Springdale are taking steps to establish a Joint Economic Development District (JEDD), according to a release from West Chester. The JEDD will encompass the 43 acres that GE Aviation plans to occupy at Union Centre Boulevard and Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Read more by clicking the hyperlink, above.
November 4, 200915 yr Details on GE plant revamp due Thursday By Mike Boyer, Cincinnati Enquirer, November 4, 2009 A $200 million plan to revitalize GE Aviation’s headquarters here could lead to creation of a new aerospace propulsion research center in partnership with the University of Cincinnati.
May 11, 201015 yr Ohio gives GE $1M for Evendale plant revamp The Enquirer, May 10, 2010 GE Aviation on Monday was awarded a $1 million grant from the state Controlling Board for new equipment as part of the jet-engine makers' ongoing effort to transform its 400-acre Evendale campus into a next-generation manufacturing, engineering and research facility. Last November, GE announced plans with state and local officials to investment more than $200 million to modernize and improve its World War II- era complex and maintain the more than 5,000 employed there. As part of that effort, the state last year approved a 15-year Job Creation Tax Credit valued at $127 million. The new grant is toward more than $28 million in new machine tools and other equipment GE plans to install, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Development said.
September 29, 20177 yr Will GE at The Banks fall short of jobs goal? Is Nelson Peltz to blame? CINCINNATI - General Electric Co.’s promise to create 1,800 jobs at the Banks by the end of this year is looking less likely, thanks in part to Procter & Gamble Co. agitator Nelson Peltz. The New York hedge fund manager, who started a proxy fight to gain a board seat at P&G, also owns about $2 billion in GE stock. Peltz argued for months the company’s costs are too high. In March, after meeting with Peltz, GE announced a plan to reduce expenses by $2 billion. In June, Jeffrey Immelt announced his retirement as CEO. Immelt is the Finneytown native who brought the Global Operations Center to Cincinnati. Immelt’s successor, John Flannery, told Wall Street analysts June 12 he will conduct “a comprehensive review” to address areas of concern to investors “around our cash flow, around our cost structures.” In July, he said GE is “taking a hard look at our corporate spending, going through a zero-based budget exercise on all of our functions.” Cont "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
October 6, 20177 yr A year after opening, General Electric Co. lays off employees at The Banks Corporate review leads to "small number" of cuts CINCINNATI - General Electric Co. said “a small number” of jobs are being eliminated at GE’s Global Operations Center at The Banks. The cuts follow a WCPO report last week that GE might fall short of its job-creation goals on the Cincinnati riverfront, thanks to a “comprehensive review” of operations by new CEO John Flannery. “All aspects of the company are being evaluated for cost efficiencies, including Global Operations,” said GE spokeswoman Arti Johri. “While a small number of Cincinnati employees are expected to be impacted by this review, our commitment to Cincinnati remains strong.” Johri said the total number of employees at The Banks remains at “nearly 1,400,” down from the “1,400+” number she gave WCPO last week. July 19, 20222 yr GE Aviation to change name ahead of General Electric split Evendale-based GE Aviation will change its name when its parent company General Electric splits into three publicly traded companies. When General Electric (NYSE: GE) spins off its health care and energy companies into their own businesses, a process that will wrap up by 2024, its remaining aviation business will be rebranded as GE Aerospace, officials announced Monday. GE CEO Larry Culp Jr., who was named CEO of GE Aviation at the end of June, said in a video announcing the change the decision to retain the GE name as part of the new company was the result of thousands of interviews with customers, employees and shareholders. So by association do we consider GE Aerospace #8? The core of GE is becoming GE Aerospace. They are spinning off the smaller HealthCare an Energy businesses. The old “GE” is no more and will not be Boston based but will be Cincinnati based. It’s huge news. “GE Aviation, the predecessor of Aerospace, has called Evendale home since 1948 when it moved into the Wright Aeronautical piston engine factory complex two years before the nation’s entrance into the Korean War. But, despite announcing the split of GE into three companies in November 2021, the Boston-headquartered firm had not said where Aerospace, which will be helmed by GE CEO Lawrence Culp Jr., would be run. Until now.” Edited January 20, 20232 yr by 646empire

I think GE Healthcare is staying in Boston (i could be mistaken), GE Energy will be HQ somewhere else and GE Aviation is renamed GE Aerospace and will be located in Cincinnati where the current GE Aviation division is based. This is great news for the profile of the city and certainly enhances the value of the city. Will not bring a lot of jobs, maybe around 100, but the jobs that will be created will be very high paying executive jobs. if you combine this with the Kroger/Albertson's executive jobs that will likely relocate to the region, you probably get 250-350 well paid executive/upper management level positions, which is good for the economy. Maybe it will lead to a few more non-stop destinations from the airport, but that would likely be minimal. It may actually lead to less air service from CVG to Boston as there will likely be less GE travel from CVG/Dayton to Boston (although GE still has a large presence in Lynn MA). The biggest benefit will be the suppliers and other related companies that will locate in the region near GE to be close to them and take advantage of their talent in the region and the raise in profile for Cincinnati. Even though this news is not entirely surprising and was a likely result of the spinoff, it is still a huge win for the region.

You would think it would be the lead story on the radio or local news, but the only place this is posted is in the Business Courier. There is not even a press release from GE about this yet stating officially they are moving the HQ to Cincinnati. Furthermore, this is not a big secret considering the business courier article is not one of their typical breaking news articles. This article has been in the works for a few weeks (or at least a number of days) given the fact it is the main feature of the weekly edition. When the courier does this type of article, it is usually more of an "in depth" piece on how the deal came together, etc. It is not necessarily to break news. Why are there no other outlets reporting on this yet?

I would be surprised if you have the news on the convention hotel today, and surprised that it was suggested it would be out today anyway. 1) you would have heard a news conference scheduled on the matter and we have not heard anything yet. 2) why drop a big story like this on a Friday when people are not paying attention as much. You would figure Monday or Tuesday is the time to make such a big announcement and then the story has more traction for a few more days.

I dont think Boston had anything to do with it. The corporate strategy to turn the corporate conglomerate into a software/tech company was the key problem because it hurt the existing aerospace business which was the economic driver for the company from a profit standpoint. Back in the 90s GE was a high flying company based on the fact it was a financial company and that came to an end in 2008. There are much more important strategic decisions then where the HQ is located. Moving from Connecticut to Boston was fairly irrelevant to GE's problems. Also worth noting, GE Vernova (the energy division) is still based in Boston and will remain there with a new office in Cambridge, so obviously, GE saw many benefits to the Boston area in 2016 when they located there that still remain true today.

CEO Immelt can be blamed for a lot (Boston, the WAY overpriced Alstom acquisition, the Chinese medical connection, the falling stock price, etc.). Best wishes to the new company/companies. There was certainly pressure to break up GE before Immelt was forced out. Immelt was there for a while and probably was biased to try and keep it together (that was what he knew and did not want to break the company up on his watch). The move to Boston was to reflect some of the changing economic realities for GE and position itself to be more nimble (it didn't work obviously). You saw this with the global operations hubs that were built in Cincinnati and elsewhere. These never came to full fruition as the pressure from Wall Street forced them to pivot and new leadership came in. Clearly, Boston provided a lot of benefits for the HQ. Huge talent base, lower taxes because of incentives offered to lure GE there, access to a large airport. If I remember correctly, the cities that GE was looking at for their relocation were Boston, New York and DC area. None would have been low tax areas (but would have been able to get a lot of incentives that Connecticut was not willing to offer) and all offered a lot of potential talent nearby. Wherever GE moved the HQ would not have mattered as the company would have suffered the same outcome. The thing about Boston though is that you can see they remain committed to the area with the HQ for the Vernova division. maybe at the time the decision was made, this was the main driver, along with the fact that Boston had a large healthcare presence too.
