Folks I don't post much but I read UO all the time. I am in the process of buying a unit at the Erie Building on W 4th in the WHD and was wondering if anyone had any

1) Historical Info

2) Pictures

about this building. Its being converted to for sale condos by David Perkowski (same guy that did the Tower Press on Superior/E19th and several others.)

I know there has been some discussion on the building in previous threads.  try an advanced search using the words, "Erie building" and see what pops up.

Interesting that they've redesigned there website.  The suggested layout of those units is just awkward.

There was an interesting story earlier this year in the PD about some guy and how he did up his Erie Building loft. Nice place.

I did a search, but it came up without any history, just some sales type info and layout info.

BTW, the units are laid out pretty well depending on which you look at. Plus, none of the floor plans are exactly right on the web site. Its like they never updated it once they put it up. The finishes on the units are all very nice, with a focus on contemorary design elements like exposed bricks, ductwork, concrete counters, you get the idea. All the units are also live-work, so there is an art gallery in one and another is a stock broker data center for a small brokerage (one of the penthouse units.) So I know all that stuff I was just wondering if anyone knows what the building used to house and if there are old pics like I have seen of east 4th street and euclid.

try searching on:

there are quite a few pics of the warehouse district, w.3, w.9, and if you search for shoreway construction there will be some pics too.

I agree.  This appears to be a much nice building with nice amenities adn finishes than what they are asking for that building on E. 4th.

Thanks for the tip. This site is amazing...it was hard to find anything on the Erie Building because it is a little obscure but I did find the following picture of the WHD or "Wholesale District" as they called it from long ago and far away. Its aweful that we bulldozed some of those cool buildings to make an ocean of parking lots. Being newish to DT cleveland that is a shocker.

We'll lets hope those buildings will be replaced with new construction soon.

Congrats and welcome to DT.

Where are you from, goteenb? Welcome to Cleveland and UO.

And now the Bingham on W9th for almost 2yrs now. But I have been a skyscraper junkie for a long time.

Well traveled!

I knew a girl who lived at the Bingham and generally liked the building (except for the wooden floors in the hallways -- desperately needed some rugs in there to cut down on the echoing footsteps). But the views of the Flats were awesome, as was the indoor access to Constantino's and the Bingham's youthful clientele.

The Bingham is an awesome building but after 2 years, it is wearing on me.

1) Price is crazy, they raised my rent to the point where its $200 more than a mortgage on a better appointed unit at the Erie Building

2) Wood floors are not just loud but gross. My unit has broken floor boards and 1/2" gaps partially filled with 100 years of dirt. Theres probably Cholera and Polio in there somewhere.

3) There is a girl who works there that drives me nuts and the concierge quits about once a quarter, which means I can never get a package in that place!

4) As you said...high heels in the hall can be very loud.

5) Constantinos pricing makes it hard to justify cooking for yourself. If you just want to make 1 meal a week and run down to get the ingredients, expect it to cost about the same as dinner for 2 at a DT sandwich place or happy hour place.

Anyway im just a complainer, overall its been a great experience and I would recommend it to people who are interested in dipping a toe in the downtown waters without buying right away.

Oh Honey, join the party.  Just make sure you're complaining about things that count.
