DAS Construction was founded in 1986 and incorporated by attorney Bernard Mandel. Bernard Mandel is the brother of Stewart Mandel, attorney and convicted money launder for then-Youngstown mob boss Lenny Strollo. More later. Still digging....

Are they related to the Mandels who give tons of money to Case?

KJP, maybe you should go downtown and join the search .

On a serious note, I really hope this has nothing to do with the medical mart nor does it hold the project back.

And the saga continues....

Agents search office of Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo's son

Federal agents are searching the offices of Vince Russo, son of Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo.

Vince Russo runs Vincore LLC, a business development and consultant service. Vincore has an office at Burke Lakeftont Airport, which is where the agents are searching.

I am really getting enthralled in this investigation.  Kind of on edge for finding out what they are looking for or who they are looking for.  I can not wait for the movie to come out.

in mississippi, perhaps...

This is fun!

let us hope justice prevails in all of todays events. Interesting about the statue and significance of it.  We have discussed this before, but I wonder if it is one of 2 that used to be in front of Moda, the other is alledged to be in a back yard on the near west side.

"Alleged" nothin'! ;-)

Quit peeking into my backyard!!  ;)

It is true what they say about Mr. Santiago's statue collection.

It is interesting that they are looking at Klaiber's office (county engineer). Supposedly, he is one of the best things going for Cuyahoga County.

That's what I thought until DAS turned up.  The only thing however is DAS does very little infrastructure work.

Blaze is a large roadway contractor.  It makes sense now to search Klaiber's office.

Corruption probe focusing on construction trade

Lynn Ischay/The Plain Dealer

An FBI agent carries what is labled as an evidence storage box into the Independence home of Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora.

About 200 federal agents searching government offices, businesses and homes in Cuyahoga county have hit at least 10 locations today.

Officials said the searches were part of a long-term public corruption investigation but refused to elaborate. The list of places search indicates that the probe may involve irregularities in construction contracts.

Any pictures of the FBI cars parked "all around the county administration building"?

This is incredible. What's funny is everyone's reaction seems to be "what took so long?"

I am hearing from a friend who used to work for the county until recently, and knows some higher ups... that they were just looking at contracts on file at the county engineer office and not focussing on Klaiber.

No pics, but I was on the B-Line trolley at lunch - I haven't seen that many news crews around one building in a LONG time.

Crazy!

I just love the PD's reporting.  Here is a caption from a photo of a u-haul truck parked next to Dimora's house:

"FBI and IRS agents carry personal items out of Cleveland councilman Jimmy Dimora's Independence home and into a U-Haul."  (this has been corrected as of 4:30PM)

There was also an instance earlier where they were saying Russo lived in Gates Mills and not on Wilson Mills Road in Mayfield, but that has since been corrected.

so as the day winds down, what watering hole could one go to  easeeavesdrop on all the tongue wagging? Harp? Great Lakes?

uh-oh, watch out KJP's gonna get you

The Sidebar?

So the county's run by the mob and the cities run by nobody?

(too soon?)

Moriarty's would be interesting.

The Mandels for whom the JCC and the Case school are named were the founders of the electronics distributor Premier Industrial on Euclid Ave in Midtown.

Those are different Mandels.

As for where to hang out this evening for interesting chatter, it depends on which branch of the Democratic Party you want to hear about. For the West Side Irish Democrats, check out the Public House in Kamms Corners or the Rockcliff in Rocky River. For the East Side Italian Democrats, check out Nido Italia or La Dolce Vita in Little Italy. And for the African American Democrats, check out Mercury Lounge downtown or Marbella on Chagrin in Woodmere.

Peter Lawson Jones can't be a happy camper today. This doesn't seem to touch him (so far) but he'll most likely pay the price in November.

Just guessing that Joe Cimperman ratted or tipped to the FBI about this and who was doing it ...

and someone probably got mad made sure he paid maybe why his house caught on fire earlier???????? we can only wonder

Since so many people expressed this is long overdue and some parties were already being investigated, wouldn't involved people have already cleaned up the paper trail knowing this was coming?

Why would he pay the price?  Do you think all the voters will take it out on him alone?  He's the only commish with some damn sense!

Exactly my point I think that Kevin Kelly or one of the other commissioners would set it up...

Just my prediction, but yes, I think voters will take it out on PLJ in November. Doesn't matter his record, with all the corruption voters will be in the mood to clean house. Happens all the time.

Now Pat O’Malley’s porno plea-bargain makes sense, which  it didn't at the time.

Even within the CCDP, these are his close allies. It sounds like he rolled like a marble on Granger Hill.

When do various terms expire for the commissioners?

Probably why PLJ is holding a press conference tomorrow morning.

And a source of mine was on the phone earlier today with WKYC's Tom Beres. Tom told my source to hang on for a second, but didn't put him on hold. Instead he put the phone down and said to someone else in the newsroom "I spoke to Pat O'Malley who said Dimora and Russo sent a message to Cimperman."

Councilman Joe Cimperman knows a lot about county politics. He's plugged in and I suspect he can hurt certain people if he so chooses. I'm not saying Pat O'Malley is right, but I'm saying his comment has some validity to it. I've not been able to get O'Malley or Cimperman on the phone to get their direct comment on this.

I've worked at Sun Newspapers for 15 years, covered Cleveland City Hall for three years, and ran a website www.clevelandmob.com from 1998-2005 and I've never seen things like this!

Is there anything to be said about Cimperman being on a course to take over as the area's democratic leader in the near future from Dimora?  Such a strange situation all this is.  This is totally out of control if the Cimperman fire has anything to do with this.  We're talking about peoples' lives here.  Sounds like the Danny Greene situation from the 70's.

I wonder if the FBI/IRS pushed their raid up after seeing what happened to Cimperman's house yesterday morning?  The thinking being w need to act now, before this escalates any further...

I think that's improbable ... the fire happened at 2:30 AM ... I doubt that the IRS/FBI were able to get 200 plus people (some from out of state) to perfectly execute this raid at 9 AM simultaneously at various locations.

I think that was not really considered possible by the Cimperman camp because Dimora had such a hammerlock on the position.

My first thought was that Cimperman was the target of an angry bar owner (he's known for fighting permits) or perhaps simply an irate constituent.  Too amateurish of an attack otherwise.

I don't see Jones catching backlash unless he's implicated.

I hope Hagan's not implicated.  I met him a few times during the 80s and he's truly a good guy.  Dimora on the other hand is an arrogant ass.

I've always wondered why Dimora's smiling in his official picture.  Shouldn't he have been at least a little upset by the latest action of the Reagan administration?

I was giddy when i heard this yesterday. I wonder if the Feds are taking a sort of Al Capone tax evasion approach to this by throwing the maxium sentances for the low level bribery such as free work on the houses since they have covered their tracks better with the major bribery/graft/corruption.

On WTAM a guy from Crains (sorry missed his name) said this corruption fiasco won't hurt the Med Mart/CC, but perhaps delay it a little. In fact he said this won't affect the timing with site location at all.

On the other hand, Ed Morrison is on WCPN right now basically saying Med Mart/CC is dead in the water.

Personally, I think this is the best thing for the county.. regardless of your political affiliation, having a county run by one party clearly isn't working.. it's slow and there aren't enough gunners who will check and balance the system.

Agreed.

Absolutely. It's one thing I love about our governmental system .. the two parties (when working correctly) balance each other out. When there's two much of one, the other party doesn't have a strong enough voice, and that's never ever good.

(as in, Congress/House of Reps)

Meh, I'm reminded of Lewis Black's line, "The only thing dumber than a Republican or a Democrat is when these pricks work together."  What I hate about our governmental system is that we've made it such a leviathan - power corrupts, and these guys have way, way too much power.  The result is more corruption than people want to imagine.

More on topic, the PD's report that the Juvenile Justice complex was was "prominent" among the files the FBI was interest in strikes me as...is there a word for the opposite of "surprising"?

I just finished reading the PD piece on the Juvienial Justice Center, this a question for those in the know. Was the purchase of land from Forest City on the up and up? (As much as anything with Cuyahoga County can be)
