Posted April 19, 200817 yr Does anyone have recommendations. Half of the email contacts on groups on http://www.cleveland.com/youngprofessionals/groups/ don't work, as I'm looking to get active with some organizations for networking and social purposes. Googling this subject has also been surprisingly ineffective. I wouldn't mind joining sporting groups, charitable organizations, social groups - just want to do something different besides working and lifting, and, again, the aforementioned website wasn't helpful. Any thoughts? (Sorry, Mayday, if this is the wrong forum for the topic.)
April 19, 200817 yr Here's a few....... http://www.clevelandhikingclub.com/ http://www.clevelandrows.org/adult.php In addition to these guys having social bike rides, they also have bike repair/rehab evenings (Wednesdays?) where people get together... http://www.ohiocitycycles.org/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 19, 200817 yr Well, there are all kinds of groups but I would need to know a little more about your likes and dislikes to make specific recommendations. I mean, do you want a group who does some kind of physical activity, like the local Road Runners club? Hiking, biking group? Kayaking group? There are all kinds of sports-related groups. Do you want to join a group with an environmental focus? The Sierra Club's northeast ohio chapter is always looking for new members. They have a variety of activities that can range from volunteering at a booth at a fair to group nature hikes. There are professional organizations like the City Club, or groups focused around specific areas of industry. What industry do you work in? There are alumni groups for schools you may have attended, groups for people with specific interests (not necessarily physical, such as bird watching groups), there are lots of volunteer organizations you can join, there is Business Volunteers Unlimited, etc.
April 19, 200817 yr I definitely have interests in physical and professional clubs. I would definitely like to partake in running, boxing, volleyball, or softball organizations. Things of that nature. I'd also like to work with the city in some capacity. While I am an attorney, I find the bar associations' events to be downright dull and with WAY too many elitists thumbing their noses at people. I want to get into property development some day so if therea re some kind of urban development organizations, I would love to learn more. And any kind of social organizations i.e. the 20/30 club would be great too, since I'm always looking to meet new people.
April 19, 200817 yr How about Habitat for Humanity? Or become a community organizer for a CDC? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 19, 200817 yr I would definitely do the rowing it is social and good exercise too. I have crashed their bashes and they are fun. I agree about joining your local neighborhood CDC-sometimes there are curmudgeons and phonies in the mix, but it is a great learning experience and way to take interest in your community . I know some guys that play in volley ball league out on Whisky Island...but it may be a generally gay league- as they all happen to be gay. I am sure there are many different leagues around. Rugby in the fall could be nice too.
April 19, 200817 yr http://www.clevelandplays.com has a bunch of different sports focused leagues that are very social as well. different times for registrations, but you might meet a lot of different people and get some exercise as well.

April 23, 200817 yr There are tons of active groups for all kinds of interests at meetup.com. Cleveland groups are here: http://www.meetup.com/cities/us/oh/cleveland/
April 29, 200817 yr There's a ski/sport/social club called the Fagowees (as in, "where the fuh-gow-ee?" heheh. No, it's not a gay group, despite the spelling of the name). We meet twice a month and have activities all year round. We're over 300 members strong and have been in existence for over 40 years. More information available at www.fagowees.org Come see us!

April 30, 200817 yr Great thread! I wish I had asked this question when I moved to Cleveland last summer. Though I am a law student and have precious little time at present to participate in anything anyway. :-(
