Posted April 20, 200817 yr So, I recently made a YouTube video of me going to the grocery store, and I took some photos along the way. Here's the video: By the way, the window you see for a split second at 0:51 is the one that broke in the earthquake the other day. Typical house in my neighborhood: Typical alley: A look down Irving Pl. Lake Michigan is just past those taller buildings four blocks down: The old firehouse I desperately want to own and rehab: The angled streets create a few oddly shaped houses: The highrise apartment buildings are randomly scattered throughout this neighborhood: Just finished last fall: Downtown in the distance: Caesars Park is a giant staircase: A look back up at the welfare housing turned retirement home: I can see something through the trees: The North Avenue Dam Bridge: The trails that run for miles on both sides of the river are fantastic. They're barely defined and full of tree cover. It's really easy to forget you're in the middle of a city: Pick n Save!!! Goodbye river, for now: I got my 85 cents (not 70, like I said in the video) for my milk jug: The next four are a panorama from the PicknSave parking lot: Typical modern rehab in a neighborhood that was ghetto five years ago: These are The Bluff Homes (www.thebluffhomes.com) by my favorite local architect Vetter Denk (www.vetterdenk.com) The Beerline B. This neighborhood used to be a wasteland. The breweries and tanneries kept their warehouses and stockyards down here. I remember this place being fenced off ten year ago. Now, it's one of the most expensive urban neighborhoods in Milwaukee. That flat area of grass is the subterranean Milwaukee Rowing Club: This is the old reservoir that they're turning into an observation deck/ampitheater. Check it out here: (water.mpw.net) On the way back home, I try to be artistic and fail: This is a new development called Kane Commons. They're using straw bale for construction and hoping to get a LEED Gold certification. More info at kanecommons.com and pragmaticconstruction.com/kanecommons.htm North Avenue Bridge: This is the East Bank Trail I mentioned earlier: Remains of an ancient flour mill: That's it. That's what I see when I run to the grocery store. April 21, 200817 yr Very nice. Milwaukee is getting (getting back) some good density! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 21, 200817 yr Lucky you! Those are nice scenes! I know, I really lucked out on this one. My rent is only $195/month including all utilities and cable internet. That's a steal for this neighborhood. The landlord said that it's cheap because the lady below me is a music teacher so there's music playing all day, every day. I wasn't about to tell the landlord that I love classical music. And for an added bonus, it's two blocks from my job. There is only one thing that could keep me from holding on to this place, and that is Cincinnati building a streetcar.
April 21, 200817 yr 195?! I thought my rent was cheap! Wow. That's great. You live in a cool neighborhood, too.
