Posted April 21, 200817 yr Personally I have a hard time relating to people because I don't watch Grey's Anatomy and this show that suppose to be hilarious, titled "The Office". I just don't get it. I'm with a large group of people and we're watching The Office (it's a ritual for people in my age group) and that dude from 40 Year Old Virgin is pretending to shoot his coworkers while his hand is shaped like a gun. This is suppose to be funny. Then, on the show, they were singing kereoke, doing an exceptionally terrible rendition of certain songs. EVERYONE I was in the room with was laughing hysterically. This is funny?! CORNY. What is wrong with people these days? Also, what's up with every reality show involving an 'elimination process'? They must have a psychologist on staff collaborating with the casting director to identify candidates with personality disorders that they know will invoke conflict amongst the rest of the cast. This enables us to sit back and critically analyze these crazy people to reassure ourselves that we are in fact better than them because we do not have these flaws. How do people derive entertainment from this? :?
April 21, 200817 yr To me, it seems that most of the humor on TV is "inside jokes" that are only understandable if you watch the entire series. People seem to be forming relationships with the cast. In my opinion, this attachment to non-reality is creepy, and potentially unhealthy. But it's a national pastime so I try not to voice my concerns too loudly. For now, I'm perfectly happy not having a TV.
April 21, 200817 yr ... People seem to be forming relationships with the cast. In my opinion, this attachment to non-reality is creepy, and potentially unhealthy ... That comment immediately brought to mind Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury (1953). If you haven't read it, do. You'll find some scary examples of Bradbury's knack for anticipating where society might be headed. For years I watched very little commercial televison, pretty much sticking with PBS. A couple of years ago I unplugged my TV, and it has stayed that way. I've completely lost my tolerance for most of it now, and if I anticipate spending time waiting for something like car service, I take a book with me. If there's no one else in the waiting room I'll turn off the TV (If I can reach it). Otherwise, I'll find someplace else to sit and read. Hospital/clinic waiting rooms are the worst, because the TV is up high on the wall and I can't go someplace else because I won't hear them when they call me. The only salvation is that sometimes they're showing proprietary health-care programming and some if it's actually informative. At work, I was usually clueless about office conversations. Typically they were based on NFL or NASCAR (depending upon the season), or Seinfeld, none of which I get.
April 21, 200817 yr Yeah, David - your humor is much more cerebral than the rest of society. That must be it. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 21, 200817 yr Wait, there is "pop" CULTURE? hmmm, mayhaps I need to figure out what culture really means ;)
April 21, 200817 yr Will Brett Michaels or anyone else from the 80s ever find true love? True Love! HA What is that? Screw love!!!
April 21, 200817 yr Pop culture doesn't bother me. I indulge in it occasionaly, but I don't take it seriously. When people take it seriously and start to let those things dominate their time and lifestyle, then it becomes a problem. I'll watch Best Week Ever when I happen to catch it and I follow a couple reality TV shows, but things like Grey's Anatomy parties bother me (they killed the bar scene on Thursdays at Miami for one).
April 21, 200817 yr I don't like Grey's Anatomy or the Office. I don’t get the Office and therefore I don’t find it funny. If I want to get a good laugh I’ll turn on Curb your Enthusiasm and Two and a Half Men.
April 21, 200817 yr I personally love "The Office". I think it's by far one of the best shows on TV. However, having said that, I think most people producing TV programs (and films for that matter) have lost any sense of creativity they once had. Most of TV is garbage, and I hate how it just infiltrates our culture so much. (Even "The Office" is a retread of a British show that is, in my opinion, way funnier because Ricky Gervais is hilarious, and Steve Carell annoys the crap out of me sometimes.) And it does absolutely have an effect on people. I feel like a total vegetable when I spend a whole day watching it. I think getting rid of my TV is an excellent idea, actually. I also like the fact that I'm rebelling against corporations wanting to shove tripe down my eyeballs.

April 21, 200817 yr I love The Office and though I'd stop short of calling myself a pop culture "junkie," I'd say that I only fall short because I don't tend to like very many reality TV shows. I have never watched American Idol or Survivor or Biggest Loser or any of that junk. I think The Office is only funny to people who have a) spent most of their professional lives working in offices, b) are people who, in those offices, are not in managerial positions and c) are not in offices in a creative field of any kind. I can tell you nearly every scenario they have portrayed in The Office episodes is nearly an exact replica of something that has happened to me in my 20+ years working in offices. My current boss, who I love and who is a great boss is only a few PC steps away, humor-wise, from being Michael Scott. I have probably worked with more than a dozen people who are exact duplicates of Andy. I *was* Pam for like 10 years. Sometimes the stuff you are asked to be a part of or the situations you find yourself in because you have an office job just make you sit there going, I can't believe this is happening, and that's basically what The Office is about, although a little hyped up/exaggerated. I love Rock of Love, I cheered last night when I saw a "reunion" program was on and I hope Brett never finds love so there will be more seasons. I have been watching ER since it's inception. I watched NYPD Blue from inception to cancellation. And the one that will really scare all of you - I have been watching General Hospital for over 30 years. I scheduled my classes around it in college until I got a VCR. I think the Tivo is one of the greatest inventions, ever. I never watch commercials, I never flip channels, I never watch any shows except ones I want to watch. That being said, TV is not my life. In addition to working 2 jobs I have a lot of hobbies/activities and enjoy being out just as much as being home watching TV. I ran 3 5Ks last year and am writing a book. But I DO engross myself in pop culture, I have ever since I was little. I subscribe to about 15 magazines and read them all cover to cover. I can tell you who was on the Partridge Family or name all the Walton kids or draw you a Hollywood family tree for just about any star or tell you what year such and such movie came out or that 867-5309 Jenny was by Tommy Tutone before I could tell you what years WW1 took place. It's not because I haven't TRIED to learn things like history, I just have a lot of trouble remembering things like that and never did well in those subjects in school, whereas I excelled in anything that involved thinking or behaving outside the box (music, drama), and I still do.
April 21, 200817 yr gees jpop just about one f-bomb per paragraph. Sorry. I have edited accordingly. :)
April 22, 200817 yr I love pop music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybjH7qRT37k I loved this video and this era of Videos!
April 22, 200817 yr [Chorus:] This is why I'm hot [2x] This is why [2x] Uh This is why I'm hot (Uh) This is why I'm hot [2x] Whoo This is why [2x] This is why I'm hot I'm hot cause I'm fly (fly) You ain't cause you're not (Mims) This is why [2x] This is why I'm hot [2x] ---- This is why I hate pop music...when I want to listen to rap, I'll stick to The Roots, Kweli, Jurassic 5, Common, etc., but you won't hear them getting quality radio time.
April 22, 200817 yr Will Brett Michaels or anyone else from the 80s ever find true love? Ummm....I don't think the "finding" is the point, I think the search is the point. That's a truly epic game on his part....he already f-ed his way around the world during the '80s and he gets to do this twenty years later? (I had to explain to my girlfriend who Brett Michaels was even after she started watching the show). Dave Brooks found a way to do something similar on a local basis: http://www.clevescene.com/2007-06-06/news/what-would-journey-do/1
April 22, 200817 yr (I had to explain to my girlfriend who Brett Michaels was even after she started watching the show). Oh come ON!! Really? What is she like 15?? I refuse to concede that I am that old! Now, would you please hand me my cane? That's a good boy. Here, have a nice caramel.

I couldn't name the lead singer of the bands that first hit when I was five and stopped when I was nine. Not even then. Complaining about pop culture is like complaining about the weather. It does no good....indeed some of the aggregate complaints merely encourage "them". The Rock Hall used to have a display featuring all of rock and roll's detractors from the 50s.
April 22, 200817 yr I'm about the most disconnected from pop culture as I've ever been. Dont watch TV (except for news shows like Chris Matthews, Gwen Ifill, the Newshour and BBC and Deutsche Welle), dont listen to pop music (including the various alt/indy things), dont pay attention to movies and Hollywood, dont follow sports (never have) so I'm really out of the loop. About all I know about it is people at work talking about this stuff, like "Lost", which was apparently popular for awhile.
April 22, 200817 yr Werther's Originals. The preferred hard candy of creepy old men in cardigans! I do not wear a cardigan! :x

A lot of metal purists disparaged Poison, but every time a band like them had a hit at least ten more bands, some of them real, got signed. I preferred metal to grunge, with the possible exception of Mother Love Bone (which wasn't really grunge), very early Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, and one or two Nirvana songs. I definitely preferred the "metal" approach to life. Grunge was depressing on purpose.
April 23, 200817 yr This is old but it's the funniest thing Ive ever seen http://youtube.com/watch?v=7jYm8roBEdU
April 23, 200817 yr I'm going to marry Sarah Silverman. Wedding invitations will be sent out via PM. She has man-shoulders but I think I can overlook that.
April 23, 200817 yr Well I guess if you can over look her man shoulders she can over look your ............
April 23, 200817 yr Sarah's occasionally funny, but when she tries to be the Andy Kaufmann IMO it falls flat. Of course I was never a Kaufmann fan either. Sam Kinison was more my speed.

April 23, 200817 yr Kinison was a hoot. I remember him on the radio when I lived in the Bay Area. Another comic to come out of that era, but a bit later, that I liked a lot of was Dennis Leary. I never by comedy albums, but his "No Cure for Cancer" album was a lot of fun. I sort of appreciated the attitude he had on that one...

Leary was another great...I liked his skits about the coffee shops (of course). Kinison on the radio/TV/video was great. Kinison live: up the intensity by an order of magnitude. "Incredible" doesn't cut it.

I hear you. My wife is only 4 years younger than me and I still had to explain to her what "Spinal Tap" was. This discussion of course arose from me spontaneously singing 'Big Bottoms' one sunny afternoon.
July 30, 200915 yr The only reality show i watched is called Solitary. i don't think i get it now since it's on the Game Show network. Other than that, reality tv sucks a fatty.
July 30, 200915 yr I get all my reality doses via The Soup. Frankly, I wouldn't even know that 90% of these shows existed if not for that show.
