April 24, 200817 yr LA you bastard taunting me with your ample jobs and warm climate. God why do I love the midwest so much.
April 24, 200817 yr Always love to see LA on here. Hollywood is changing so fast...when that W hotel is complete, I really think the whole dynamic will change for the better in the neighborhood. also those little towers in front of the Nokia Theater in LA Live? What the hell?!?!
April 24, 200817 yr New York City, with less density. Nice! Booo! That's like me saying, "Kentucky, Ohio with less teeth!" Anywho... nice pics as always Chris! Always a pleasure seeing your photos from LA... or anywhere else for that matter.
April 24, 200817 yr Venice Beach. I love sausage kingdom. The Chicken Andouille or the Spicy Italian is great although the chili chese fries are hit or miss.
April 25, 200817 yr New York City, with less density. Nice! Booo! That's like me saying, "Kentucky, Ohio with less teeth!" LOL. I heard LA is actually 1/3rd more dense than NYC. Don't know who to cite for that though.
April 25, 200817 yr I don't know what to say about the first picture. Nice set! I thought the same exact thing...interesting nonetheless. I especially like the photo with the staircase leading up to the Bank of America building.
April 27, 200817 yr I absolutely love this photo spread. So many great photos to choose from for my favorite. I didn't care for the first photo much, though. At first glance, I got sick to my stomach. As for density, LA is getting some decent density for a city that used to be derided for its nauseating sprawl. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 27, 200817 yr I was in LA in October and stumbled upon Broadway after a seminar, and it really is one of the most badass streets I've ever been on. Looks like a more dense Prospect Avenue (Cleveland) from the 1970's.
April 29, 200817 yr When did US Bank slap that tacky logo on top of Library Tower? It's such a fantastic building, and the logo completely ruins it. I'm curious what the crown looks like at night, now that it's chopped up.
April 29, 200817 yr I like the Sepia-toned skyline shot. Reminds me of the 'slice of life' montages that were in so many movies based in LA in the late 80's...which then reminds me of my childhood.....living in upstate NY, which of course is nothing like LA..... I'm also liking the 8th from last..the panoramic traffic shot. I think it's the lighting and the perspective. I hope the traffic stopped when you crossed the street!
April 30, 200817 yr So that was you with the camera! Was down in LaLa last week for a friend's funeral, arriving at rush hour (when isn't it rush hour??) and staying only a few days. Hotter than the hinges of hell. The pollen and smog nearly killed me as well. Good photos, looks like you really got around. It took me only an hour to get from SF to LA, but 2 hours 10 minutes by shuttle from LAX to Silverlake!! Oy! My friends insisted we go to the Grove (Easton West, only not as nice, in my humble opinion) packed to the rafters and $$$$$ for dinner. All in all, not a good trip. At least the Mexican food is good in LA. There really is a lot going on down there, but it is just too big and the traffic is way too out of control. Plus it was Armenian Independence day or something and we kept getting stuck in the middle of it. LA has its charms, but you gotta have lots of money, drugs or a good combination of both to enjoy it. Or Botox. Or maybe I'm just an old geezer.....neh, that can't be it!!
May 9, 200817 yr great pics. i recognize this scene & in particular it makes me feel all at home  as for the city itself? eh. ....but it grows on ya.
May 9, 200817 yr *Remember when I say this, I have never been to LA, so feel free to pounce right away!* ... but this doesn't look appealing to me at all. Everything that interest me in an urban core seems like it is missing from these photos. None of LA's skyscrapers look attractive to me except for maybe this: http://www.urbanohio.com/UOThreads/LosAngeles/2008/April/08ApriLosAngeles14.jpg This picture looks like Sim City when you place the waste management plant too close to the neighborhoods: http://www.urbanohio.com/UOThreads/LosAngeles/2008/April/08ApriLosAngeles17.jpg This is probably the only thing that I find appealing: www.urbanohio.com/UOThreads/LosAngeles/2008/April/08ApriLosAngeles38.jpg http://www.urbanohio.com/UOThreads/LosAngeles/2008/April/08ApriLosAngeles40.jpg No thanks. I mean one day I'll visit, just because I feel like every US citizen should at one point, but I wouldn't look forward to the visit. It'd have to be planned for a San Diego trip or something like that. Does this sound snobbish? If so, that's not how I meant for it to come out.
May 10, 200817 yr It's a city people love or hate. I absolutely love it and I find the Library Tower a classic design. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 11, 200817 yr well, it makes sense that columbus people would take to a sprawly city of forgettable downtown skyscapers like los angeles and cincinnati people wouldn't necessarily.

May 12, 200817 yr In response to Cincinnatus, LA is very difficult to grasp without spending a substantial amount of time here. I was initially drawn to living here by the mix of nice year round weather, the beach culture, and the urban environment... the mountains were just an added bonus. As I've lived here and have gotten to know the city better and explore many facets of it, I've come to appreciate the diversity of people that exists here, the randomness of the neighborhoods, and the urban density that isn't aparent from aerials of the city. It's a love it or hate it city, that's for sure. The city has many flaws... just like all of us do. I however, have fallen into the love with LA!
May 12, 200817 yr We'll I don't like it for the traffic alone. 90 Minutes to go to Burbank. almost two hours to get to woodland hills. Crazy! I went to a Dodgers game and we got there in the bottom of the 2nd and people left after the seventh. All complained about the traffic. And the thief/thieves, that stole my bike. I'll get you....trust me, I'll get you.

I'll get you....trust me, I'll get you.  The traffic is definately a pain in the ass. I've learned how to deal with it for the most part. The key is to live in a neighborhood where you can walk to most of the things you need, and not have to drive to far to work. Also living near to major bus lines is helpful. If you're going to drive a significant distance, do it on off hours or use back streets when you hit freeway congestion. The back streets usually flow pretty well. They are working slowly to improve the rail system too (Expo Line) which will eventually help.
May 12, 200817 yr Unfortunately, Fox Hills or the strip malls on Jefferson are the closest to me and since I don't drive in LA, taking a bus is a bitch and a cab all but impossible. For work I have to go to Burbank, and offices on Santa Monica, West LA and Woodland Hills. So i'm sitting in traffic going from office to office. If I go to Burbank, I have to be by 5:45AM to beat the rush hour traffic and I can't believe the amount of people on the road at that hour. ugh!!
