April 26, 200817 yr Huntington is one of my absolute favorite river towns. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 27, 200817 yr Once held 80,000 population, now down to what... 45,000? ^ Pullman Square, which actually has a good share of locally owned businesses. Three shops at Pullman are owned by one individual (one shop being so successful that she opened another boutique next door), and the bookstore is locally owned (Empire Books, which spawned off a short-lived store in Columbus). ^ Facade removal that was in progress last year, to convert the upper floors into lofts. Not for sure why it's slowed down. ^ I remember when this block had a Stone and Thomas (very, very nice interior), and when the street was four-lanes westbound. It's now two-way, and the stores are slowly returning, spurred on by the success at Pullman. ^ 4th Avenue corridor from the west end of downtown to Marshall U. is slated for major streetscape improvements, including the narrowing of the boulevard from four to two-lanes with bike lanes and parking and new sidewalks and gateway corridors. The goal is to link the university with downtown with something patterned off of Short North. ^ Keith-Albee, which is undergoing restorations. They demolished the partions last year. I remembered when the Pullman cinemas opened up and people cried foul that it was going to kill off the three downtown movie theaters -- but it was a golden opportunity to restore the Keith Albee into what it once was -- a performing arts center. Great photos!
April 27, 200817 yr Interesting to see how similar many portions of downtown are to Wheeling. Hopefully downtown whg will get the ball rolling in a positive way once again!

April 28, 200817 yr Huntington is much younger than I imagined - only platted in 1869? It must be one of the youngest towns in the Appalachians/Ohio Valley?
April 28, 200817 yr Handsome downtown. The prospect of seeing the Keith=Albee returned to its proper status is exciting.
April 29, 200817 yr I was surprised to see how young it is too... I went through this city on the Greyhound for the first time last summer, and was very pleasantly surprised. It looks like a healthy and lively city. Compared to the rest of West Virginia it's AMAZING. I was not impressed with the other established cities in that state, especially Bluefield.
