Posted April 28, 200817 yr I'm guessing we pretty much beat out the Enquirer and the Dispatch...Terry Pluto got robbed. No Dick Feagler????? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AP declares Plain Dealer best large paper in Ohio Monday, April 28, 2008 The Plain Dealer was named the best large newspaper in the state Sunday at the Associated Press of Ohio’s annual convention in Columbus. Editors from out-of-state newspapers gave The Plain Dealer the General Excellence award in its division — newspapers with circulation greater than 75,000, which included the Toledo Blade, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Dayton Daily News, the Akron Beacon Journal, and the Columbus Dispatch. more below http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news-2/120937153173430.xml&coll=2
April 28, 200817 yr I hate the AP, too. Most condescending, ill-informed, judgmental reporters you'll ever meet. They and the PD deserve each other. Interested quote at the bottom of your posts, urbansurfin. I know a K. Gibson who recently took a job at the Ohio Department of Development. Are we talking the same person? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 28, 200817 yr The Enquirer sucks, but is showing small signs of improvement. Dispatch has the best political, national, and international coverage but seems to lack on Columbus specific news. The PD has never really done anything for me...every time I go to the website I can't seem to get around slews of crime related stories and actually find anything of substance. It's probably just a user problem though. My rank of the 3 C's: 1. Columbus Dispatch 2. Cleveland Plain Dealer 3. Cincinnati Enquirer Now if the DDN were smart they would have bought the old Cincinnati Post that just shut down and made a Cincinnati-Dayton regional paper out of the two of them. This would have easily been the best newspaper in Ohio...but I digress. I also must say that this idea is not my own...it is thomasbw's but I agree whole heartedly.

In all honesty, the Cleveland website is more focused on "shock headlines" than the PD itself. I'm guessing cleveland.com shoots for more user comments and "hits", which only amplifies any negative news stories by the paper.

It's no longer the Cleveland Plain Dealer. That is ONE of my issues with that fish wrap!

But the dispatch belongs at the bottom of a bird cage. That paper is attrocious.
April 29, 200817 yr I wish there was a way the Enquirer could've been voted the worst ... maybe this way management would shake things up or call for a change.
April 29, 200817 yr ^The discussion was about large papers in Ohio. I don't think the Blade falls into that category. In all honesty, the Cleveland website is more focused on "shock headlines" than the PD itself. I'm guessing cleveland.com shoots for more user comments and "hits", which only amplifies any negative news stories by the paper. That must be it, because that has been the extent of my PD experience.
April 29, 200817 yr Maybe the Blade has gotten better since 2000, but it remains the only paper that can produce giggles in class at the mere mention of its name and not because of its high quality. That was after a period of extensive grand-standing on a bunch of issues and John Robinson Block craziness, maybe its gotten better.

I used I and think as a representation of my personal opinion. Just to clarify (from graf 2): Editors from out-of-state newspapers gave The Plain Dealer the General Excellence award in its division — newspapers with circulation greater than 75,000, which included the Toledo Blade, the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Dayton Daily News, the Akron Beacon Journal, and the Columbus Dispatch. Not to pick on you, because I thought Grey's comment was a tad harsh, but a fact is a fact. The Blade does fall into the large newspaper category. That's not a personal opinion, it is a fact.
April 29, 200817 yr It's interesting because in other newspaper discussions they break them down further by their distribution. For example the Cincinnati Enquirer was the top gainer among those with a circulation of more than 100,000 copies a day, according to the ABC data. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080429/BIZ01/804290323/1076/BIZ
April 29, 200817 yr According to ABC, the Blade has more than 100k. BLADE, TOLEDO (LUCAS CO.) SAT M DLY 119,611 BLADE, TOLEDO (LUCAS CO.) SUN DLY 150,019 BLADE, TOLEDO (LUCAS CO.) AVG M (M-F) DLY 120,125 Each of the newspapers mentioned are over 100k daily. But, you're right. Typical breakup of newspapers are Big: 100k+ Mid-size: 50k-100k Small: >50k This does not divvy papers up into three equal stacks. There are way more small papers than mid-size or big.

April 29, 200817 yr I have to imagine that the Enquirer's growth is entirely based on picking up former Cincinnati Post subscribers in Northern Kentucky (the Post's core subscriber base). The other odd thing is that I swear the Enquirer covers NKY better than Cincinnati at this point at least in terms of local and interpretative news (based entirely on reading the newspaper online).
April 29, 200817 yr I wonder what the Dispatch and ABJ are doing that's causing them to get more readers on Saturdays than their weekday readership? All the other papers see less readership on Saturdays compared to their weekday papers. AMN, do you or did you work for a newspaper? You used our industry term (graf) for paragraph. Just curious. April 30, 200817 yr The other odd thing is that I swear the Enquirer covers NKY better than Cincinnati at this point at least in terms of local and interpretative news (based entirely on reading the newspaper online). If you go onto the Local Section online, you'll see more Nky stories than Ohio stories almost every single day. They also cover a lot of northern 'burbs news...it seems like an obvious strategy to grow their market control into the neighboring areas.
April 30, 200817 yr I guess folks in NKY are more newsworthy (I always kind of knew that in my heart).
May 3, 200817 yr For me.. I can not stand the dispatch... I think the sectioning is in poor taste.. and it seems very plain.. I've never picked up a printing of the blade... The enquirer is very good story wise as is the Akron Beacon Journal.. The plain dealer is just as its name says ... Plain.!.
May 4, 200817 yr Interested quote at the bottom of your posts, urbansurfin. I know a K. Gibson who recently took a job at the Ohio Department of Development. Are we talking the same person? Yes. That's the same Kimberly Gibson.
May 4, 200817 yr I always thought The Blade was considered Ohio's best newspaper. The Blade gets a bad rap, and Block may be a strange ranger. But I really like the Blade. It's fiesty, whereas all the other big papers seem to be overplanned by mid-level editors who go to too many meetings and seminars and, as H.L. Mencken said, "never feel the wind of the world in their faces." The Blade, more than any other paper in Ohio, I think, gets into the issues with longer stories that have lots of background. It covers rail issues, megafarm issues, environment, land-use in an intelligent manner. It also has done some good political reporting. I read it only sporadically, but I always get a charge out of it.
May 4, 200817 yr Is the Blade locally owened or is it part of a media chaing or conglomerate? Small Conglomerate? http://www.blockcommunications.com/
