Cleveland - Couple of Questions about the Warehouse District

Hello All -

First, let me state how helpeful this website is - you have all made this transition easier.  My boyfriend and I are moving to Cleveland from Boston, due to his relocation with the Coast Guard.  He will be working right downtown, so we have decided to focus our apartment hunt in the Warehouse district.  We are coming out this weekend to check out places, and I wanted some thoughts/suggestions about the places we are already scheduled to look at.  They are:

The Bingham, Perry Payne, The Pointe at Gateway, Water St Apt, East 4th Street, Worthington and Bridgeview.

Our basic needs are either a one or two bedroom apartment, close(ish) to public transportation, preferably a lot underneath or attached for our car, and a clean, safe, fun living environment.  We are in our early twenties and coming from Boston our budget for housing pretty much fits in everywhere downtown (we currently pay 1450 for a 500 sq ft studio...so prices out in Cleveland are amazing to us!)  Are there any buildings in the area that we should be looking at?  Are there any on our list that are simply awful and we shouldnt waste our time on?  We are moving in mid-June, and this will probably be our only chance to come and look.  Any help, suggestions and tips are welcome.

Again, thank you so much for this site.  It really has been so helpful!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and welcome to Cleveland! Just so you know - the Pointe at Gateway and East 4th Street apartments are technically in the Gateway neighborhood, not the Warehouse District. Gateway is basically the area east of Public Square and south of Euclid near the stadiums (Gateway is about a 5-10 minute walk from the Warehouse District).

Welcome Ms. mnnyma.

One note, many of the buildings you list are not in the warehouse district, but in other parts of downtown.  Not to worry as its easily walkable to each of those areas.

There are quite a few Downtowner's here, but the ONE BEDROOM rental market downtown, from what I've read is very tight.

Tower City/Public Square in Downtown Cleveland is the main terminal for many buses and the rapid (aka the train or the "T" to you ) also has a station at Tower City.  In addition many buses pass thru.

Along with the aforementioned buildings, check out the Statler Arms, Reserve Square and the Chesterfield.  You can never have too many options.

As I recently went through the search for Downtown apartments (just moved into the Warehouse District), let me add a few thoughts:

- Getting a two bedroom will be easier than a one bedroom - there are plenty of nice two bedrooms available, one bedrooms are harder to come by (but still attainable)

- Check out the Bradley Building & Waterstreet - both very nice, but Waterstreet doesn't have the covered parking. The rest suggested are great comments & a good start.

- You also may want to get yourself a copy of Downtown Digs - very, very good resource.  http://www.downtown-digs.com/ME2/Sites/Default.asp

See, now, thats how you can tell I am not from the area!  I guess I should have said we are looking downtown in general...what exactly defines the Warehouse District (ie what street coordinates should I be looking for?)  The significant other will be working on E 9th St by St. Clair...Thanks again!

There are some maps of downtown in the relocation thread.

in a nutshell

the historic Warehouse distict:  is bound by West 3 to West 9 8 Lakeside to Superior

Tower city:  is Public Square and all of Tower City

the historic E. 4/gateway district :  is Ontario to East Ninth and Euclid to Carneige

Check out downtownapartments.com, 425 Lakeside is very nice.

I've lived in the Pointe at Gateway for about 2.5 years and have really enjoyed it. I think a few different 2 bedroom floor plans are available but no 1 bedrooms. The only thing I don't like is that parking is across the street. Also, I wouldn’t recommend living below the 5th floor in the Pointe on the side facing Huron road because of noise from the bar patios.

Also, check out http://www.prospectplaceapartments.com/ It's about 2 blocks east of the Pointe at Gateway.

JeffreyT, mentioned Downtown Digs, which has a terrific website and maps showing where the basic downtown neighborhoods are. The maps list various apartment and condo buildings, which you can click on to get pictures and descriptions of each building. Start here:

Happy hunting!!

Thanks again for all the help!  We decided on The Bingham, due to a combination of factors.  We also checked out Cleveland as a whole and while it will be a big change from Beantown, I think we will be happy in Cleveland.  All the input was greatly appreciated!

Congratulations and don't be a stranger here.  We'd like to know how accurate our advice is and new blood in the mixing bowl is always a good thing.

Hey everyone...I'm thinking about moving downtown, and was thinking about WaterStreet Condos or Perry Payne Condos.  Anyone have any I'm going to check them out, and I'll report back, but I was wondering if anyone has any first hand experiences.
