Is it OK to get pastic bags if you reuse them to pick up the dogs crap?

I used to do that but now you can buy biodegradable corn bags for cheap and feel good about throwing it in the can.

It looks like Ikea is really coming along nicely.

I can't wait 'til it opens...I've been doing some pricing out down here at the Atlanta IKEA.  I'm ready and waiting for the Cincinnati location to open!

don't you have to get your own place , away from green twp., first

^It's in the works...and I really wish you didn't have to advertise that fact like that.  I hate admiting that I live in the 'burbs...but it's not by my own choice.  If that's any saving grace with you guys...  :|

What's the latest projected open date?

I recently got a bed from IKEA, couldn't wait until this one opened, had to order it from the catalog.  Can't wait to get up to this one and buy the crap out of things.

Rando, at least you're from the Westside and have the Highlander roots!

I can't wait either!

Their shipping prices suck & more than half the sh!t on there is unavailable for online purchase! :(

Their shipping prices suck...

Understatement of the century. Ikea's exorbinant shipping prices have always fascinated me. I think they're the only mail order retailer that charges actual costs. Put another way, you really understand how other retailers roll the cost of shipping into the retail cost, which in turn drives down the quality of manufacturing, all in an effort to keep pricing attractive and profit margins wide.

Charging for bags? Is that what helps big box retailers sleep at night?

You need to travel to Europe.  They have been charging for bags for years.    They are a nicer bag than your standard Kroger plastic bag.

Does anyone understand the reputation of Ikea and how crappy their product is?  I don't have any Ikea products, but friends from around the country that have Ikea stores have told me that it has a terrible reputation.  Granted, cheap praces and decent style, but I can't help but think that my first visit to Ikea will be a disappointment.

I said this early in the thread.  Plus, WHY?, WHY? is this thread 11 pages long!

Because it is well over a year old and people like IKEA. You get what you pay for at IKEA. Which means, they have more-affordable stuff that's more cheaply manufactured, and they have higher end stuff that is very well made. In my experience, IKEA furniture is solid until you need to move it to your new place. And considering the mobility of this society, it's no surprise that horror-stories abound.

Because of people like me who have their own opinion that Ikea is a great store where you get great stuff at very reasonable prices. Can you get stuff there you may be unhappy with? Probably, but they do have a return department just like any other large retailer. I suggest you ignore this thread and don't shop there when it opens and we'll all be happy.

I agree wiith Cincymarkertman and Kingfish!  I've gotton some nice stuff there, and my kids have purchased things that I hate!  Don't shop there if you don't like it!

Besides, what is the obsession with thread length?  If there is stuff to talk about, and people are talking, what is the problem?  And what is with the power trip some people are on when a thread goes off topic?  Again, if the discussion can survive, what's the difference?  Get over it!!

Personally, I like IKEA.

... but I am more excited about the amount of people that this is going to bring to the region (grab lunch, catch a movie, go shopping at other places while they are here, etc...)

I refuse to post in this thread & contribute to forum sprawl. From now on, all my Ikea comments will be posted in The Banks and/or Queen City Square threads.

The restaurants in IKEA are actually quite good and cheap. Something for the poor YPs of West Chester.

I hated the thought of Ikea until I actually visited the one in Pittsburgh.  After that visit I had a change of heart.  While I prefer solid wood furniture, Ikea is a great place to accessorize your home so in the end I am looking forward to visiting Ikea when it opens in West Chester.

How is this place different than any other Big Box?

Ikea kind of gets off because they actually put SOME effort in being more envriomentally friendly- solar panels, paying for bags, magazine recycling...It's I guess the lesser of the evil big-boxes.

Plus, some of their stuff is cool. And Cheap.

I have a small rug that I purchased for my Bedroom from ikea...in 2004. I wouldn't buy the big stuff (personal pref) but bookshelves, entertainment centers, and the like hold up rather well, and look pretty good.

I think they get a free pass since they are"cool" and "European"; I appluad their environmentally friendly efforts, Wal Mart does the same things in some pilot stores. In the end the IKEAS still rely on greenfield development, large sites, large buildings and car-friendly locations.

33% of their stuff comes from Asia too http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/about_ikea/press_room/manufacturesproduct.pdf

Considering that half of the store is a warehouse, that's to be expected. I would love to see them attempt an urban store, however. I also like how they have a limited number of stores.

Its a drop in the bucket compared to the inherent wasted land and abandonment involved in the development of suburban/exurban big boxes. Not to mention its a business that draws from other cities, which wastes tons of gas in a vehicle that I'm sure is bigger on average than those used for Walmart shopping (loading furniture requires a lot of space). IKEA is no better than any other big box retailer, lets face it; we all have less of a problem with it, because it's such a trendy store.

Walmart is for american hillbilly's  and Ikea is for European hillbilly's.  :-D

^

yeah, actuallly the market in Euro for Ikea is more low-end/blue collar (at least Germany)

One of their German stores is in Saarlouis, which is sort of a German Lordstown.

Well they are putting up 50 ft poles to hold up what will be a huge IKEA sign. The area is a big mess with Cin-Day closed and all the road work on Mulhauser and UC Blvd.  Good thing roads are being upgraded or it would be impossible to get to this place.  I wish they would've bought the land north of the Streets of West Chester, would be easier to get to.

Actually there are some brownfield Ikeas. They built a massive one in South Philly. Though Philly is their North American hq. They have two in the region and both are relatively brownfield in their location.

The one in Atlanta is also a redevelopment of a brownfield site in Midtown Atlanta.  It has a multi-level parking garage under the building (which is 2 stories, like most IKEAS)...that helps to minimize that actual amount of surface lot parking on site.

other big boxes are being built on Brownfield sites.

Wal*Mart is proposed for the old Ford Plant in Fairfax; and the Centre on Cinti was a brownfield, I think.

(but those are not ped friendly developments -- I guess it would be hard to carry furniture home tho)

  • 2 weeks later...

Drove past there yesterday and they are putting up the blue siding.  I'll be over the tonight, so I'll snap a picture or two.

Ikea storefront taking shape

BY MIKE BOYER | [email protected]

WEST CHESTER TWP. — The iconic blue exterior of home furnishing retailer IKEA’s first Ohio store is starting to be visible here.  With the structural steel in place for the 344,000-square-foot store in place, contractors have begun installing the distinctive blue composite panels for the building’s exterior.

The store is slated to open next spring.  “We hope to be fully enclosed before winter,” said spokesman Joseph Roth.  The West Chester store is on 28 acres along Interstate 75, south of Union Centre Boulevard.

He was obviously on his way to grab a bite to eat in downtown Dayton, spreading his wings about in the Cincinnati-Dayton Metroplex.

why were you out there to begin with?

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I'm moving there in a couple weeks; the Mrs. just wasn't down with moving to OTR or Northside like I wanted to, for safety purposes.  Or if truth be told, I'm just a huge fan of clock towers and "urban parks".

Didn't have time to pull over and take some decent shots but, save for the geezer in the caddy, this shows the corner where they have started adding the blue.

please note the sarcasm in my statement about clock towers

^Well now you're going to have to change your avatar to the logo of the local West Chester ale.

hyde park; oakley, even mariemont

HUH??!! West Chester over OTR or Northside?? I would file for divorce!

You probably would have been better playing along with my guess that you were heading out for dinner in Cincinnati's northern downtown (aka Downtown Dayton).

I'm sorry, but I'm loving that northern downtown designation...I find it quite hilarious.

I would make my wife's life a living hell if she forced me to live in the suburbs! I hate the suburbs.

I think Clifton, Mt. Lookout, Hyde Park or even Pleasant Ridge would be a good compromise.

We should just call it uptown!

P. Ridge is great.

If my spouse just completely shut me down to the city, but wanted something like WC, BA, or Mason ... I think I would pull for Mariemont.

However, I don't understand why you guys didn't check out Hyde Park, Oakley, or Mt. Lookout?

(Wow ... have we gotten off topic or what? lol ...)

Schools, I'm guessing.

Like my boss (who lives in Orlando proper) says "I do live in a good school district. We just make it bad by not sending our kids there."

Whats BA?

blue trash

Wow, has this gone off topic!

It was a combination of factors: like being priced out of a decent place in Hyde Park, Oakley, or Mariemont; we both work in the northern burbs, it's halfway between our families in Dayton and Cincy, etc, etc.  It's going to be a 5 year thing, then we'll be able to afford a nice place in HP.

Don't crucify me yet, I'm too new to the forum.
