Tribe fans voted their Progressive Field as the best ballpark in baseball.

These are your rankings. They are based solely on results taken from an online survey of baseball fans in March, when we asked readers to rate their hometown ballpark in 10 categories. As a group, these fans know of what they speak: Nearly 15 percent of the responses came from season-ticket holders, and more than half of all the responses came from fans who attend at least five games per season.

Pretty cool.

But Dodger Stadium is now considered a "grand old" ballpark? I think you have to be pre-war to be considered old, at least in my estimation.

Pretty cool.

How many "pre war" stadiums are left?

That's cool about Progressive Field. I think just 3 pre-war stadiums are left: Fenway, Wrigley and Yankee Stadium.

Those are the three I was thinking about as well and next year it will be down to two.

I love the sports illustrated fans.  They are such intelligent readers!  :-D

"The Prog" is cool and all, and certainly a Top 5 candidate...but I don't know about it being the best.  I've always heard fantastic things about Camden Yards and Coors Field...PNC Park looks pretty darn nice too.  With that said, I haven't been to anyone of those ballparks (Great American Ballpark, Turner Field, Comiski Park) so I don't have personal experiences to back up what I've heard from others.

Pretty cool.

Don't worry. We have new wars.

Keep it on topic, nobody wants to hear your opinions on military conflicts in a thread about baseball stadiums.

From what I've heard, Turner Field isn't very unique, sort of missed the boat on the retro stadium fad.

In my opinion, Comiski (US Cellular) is a dump, nothing unique, the neighborhood blows.. you get of the El and walk directly to the stadium (which is in the middle of a big parking lot) and after the game, you leave and walk directly back to the El.

Camden Yards is awesome, it was the first MLB retro stadium, and still a gem.

yes, the si folks and fans debated those ballparks as well. they got their due consideration, clik the link, you'll see they can be found down the list

How is that an opinion on military conflicts? It's a fact that there are more wars. Therefore, there will be new reference point for pre-war buildings at some point in the future, when it's historically significant.

Sheesh.

To contribute something on-topic: I found Camden Yards failed to impress. Now I hadn't gone to it until after I'd been at the Jake, but I felt Cleveland's park was better.

Fenway is great if for the majesty, but as car as a place to watch a game, it does leave something to be desired. The view lines are not great everywhere. The seats are uncomfortable. The prices are crazy.

PNC Park is a great new ballpark.

Yankee Stadium is a great, but HUGE, place to watch a ball game. I'd rank it above the Jake.

I haven't been to enough stadiums to say what's the best, but the Jake is the second best of the eight parks where I've watched a game.

In other news, a bill has just been passed that makes it illegal to call Progressive Field "the prog". :police:

I haven't been to Coors, but I think the Jake is better than Cameden or GABP.

  • Codger stadium is cool to look at but a bitch to get to.  Good food!  People show up in the 2nd inning and leave in the 7th
  • Wrigley is just bad for sitelines and horrible seats.
  • Shea is OK if you're in the lower bowl near the bases.
  • Yankee stadium is eh, but I will only sit in the outfield.
  • I like Enron Minute Maid in Houston
  • Joe Robbie/Pro Player is bad for baseball
  • I don't like Fenway, it's just outdated and uncomfy to me.
  • Tropicana Field is like a circus tent and just stinks!
  • Rangers Ball park reminds me of the jake in a way
  • Turner Field is an afterthought
  • Oakland Coliseum is hard to get to and feels half empty.  But their doesn't appear to be a gad seat in the house.
  • Rogers Centre is interesting in a '80s kinda way.  The Suites are fab-u-lous!
  • The Giants Park is another jake knockoff but boring to look at.
  • Citizens Park is a Jake knockoff.  The Roof top bleachers are neat and the bullpin set up is interesting.

Oh....I guess I paid a lot of attention.  Can you ask them to improve their food.  thanks!

In my previous statement I wasn't referring to GABP, Turner, or Comiski as being good ballparks...but rather the ballparks I have personally been to.  From what I've heard Camden, Coors, and PNC always come up in the conversation.  So my Top 5 just out of observation would be:

1. Camden Yards

2. Coors Field

3. Progressive Field

4. PNC Park

5. Fenway, Wrigley, or Comerica

And yet the Indians had the 5th lowest attendance in the League last year according to Terry Plutos column yesterday.Even with a team that was a game from going to the World Series. I think that the whole town has a hangover from the 90's teams that couldn't win it all...

Agreed the term "the Prog" is unacceptable, maybe they could go old school and call Progressive Field the 'Teepee' ala Major League?

It is still, and will always be, The Jake.

lol ...

Over Busch II? Yeah right. Like Rando said above, PNC is also nice. Small, but nice. If they would remove the gimmicky pirate theme on that video board, it would be 5x better. That's why I can't stand Turner and At&t Park.

How about Progro Field?  Good ring or no?

Yeah the Jake is tops! If only Crooked River were still around and had a vend stand.

Folks, this poll wasn't the result of asking SI readers which ball parks they liked the best!  It was a survey of each park's amenities, resulting in rankings for each of the amenities.  Progressive won the overall ranking. Period.  That's all!  No one said it was now the best ball park.  All it says is that Progressive's fans overall like it more than other ballparks fans like their park.

I have been to 22 of the 30 major league ball parks.  My top 5 rankings of the one's I haven't been to are:

1.  San Diego

2.  Seattle

3.  Coors

4.  Washington

5.  Houston

I have no idea what that means!!!!

The Jake by far has the best amenities of any of the parks I've been to.  and as mentioned earlier many have tried to copy.

That's nice.. well this poll ranks The Jake #1, and that's their (along with many other's) opinion.

But isn't the Progressive a knock off of Camden Yards? (since they started the retro trend?). That's like calling Veterans' a knock off of Three Rivers a Knock off of Riverside a knock off of Busch a knock off of Shea...

Ok, ok. My apologies then ...

So what are the amenities that Prog Field have that the majority of others don't?

I have no idea. Honestly, I don't go beyond a beer and a hot dog/brat. I mean the scoreboard is nice? The bathrooms work? The centerfield beer garden is nice, especially since no one goes to tribe games.

Correct, but IIRC, Camden came back and did a minor renovation and reevaluated their food options and adjusted their field, boxes and loges after the Jake opened.

According to some of our sports writers, now their field is about to lose it's intamacy as building is built that will block views and make the park feel cramped.

I think that the retro trend isn't really a copycat type of trend.  Cookie cutter stadiums, yes.  The retro trend (in my opinion) centers around fitting a stadium to its city/neighborhood/surroundings.  It attempts to keep old traditions while adding modern amenities.

I would agree

Wow.. MTS agreeing on numerous threads.. human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA!

Have you guys ever figured out what amenities are available at Prog Field that aren't available at other ballparks? I'm really curious.

If you are referring to my mention of amenities, I didn't mean to imply that there are ones in Cleveland better or different from others.  My point was that the same questions were posed to visitors at different ball parks, and for a given question, the Cleveland voters gave a higher rating than other cities did.  Then they just totaled up the results, and overall, Prog had the highest rating.  Take a look at the survey and you will understand.

I've been to a few games at the Jake and I never really thought it was all that great.  Sure it's a nice ballpark and I enjoyed my experiences there, but I didn't really think it was anything too special or extraordinary.  Personally my favorite ballparks that I have been to are Dodger Stadium, Safeco Field (Seatle), Wrigley, and in some ways Yankee.  I actually think I like Great American better than the Jake because the outfield is open and has great views of the river and the bridges, the other side has great views of downtown, and the concourses are nice and wide and allow for easy movement.

While I love The Jake (Not that Prog crap) and it is certainly a fantastic ballpark, I've been to PNC, the old PacBell in San Fran, and Camden Yards and all three are hands down better than "The Prog."  I'm not even including the old time Fenway or Wrigley, which are the "nuff said" parks.  That isn't to say "boo The Prog!" but just an unbiased observation (and fyi, I find GABP a tragedy).

And to be quite honest, I enjoyed Comerica Park as well, though it was a bit cheesy.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

notice PNC Park ranks THIRTIETH in "team quality"!  hahahahahahaha... put a MLB-calibre team in there for once and it would take its rightful place on top of this poll... the Pirates are like the Cincinnati Bengals of baseball... what a squandered stadium that is

Love these quotes about PNC

What is the worst incident you've witnessed against an opposing fan or yourself?

    * "There aren't any bad incidents I've witnessed. It's difficult to get too fired up at a Pirates game, the fans are so numb from the interminable losing!!"

    * "I wound up sitting in the midst of a crowd of drunk West Virginia natives who were rude and smoking."

    * "The level of play for the past 15 years is the worst."

    * "Witnessing Jeromy Burnitz, Benito Santiago, or Derek 'Operation Shutdown' Bell put on a Pirates uniform."

btw, Miller Park at 2?  wtf!

Progressive is quite nice... no complaints here... and the team is consistently good... definitely a Top 10-er

^ I loved PNC park.

Thank you Bill Murray! :)

Could you guys use city names when debating the various ballparks? The sponsor names change too often for me to keep track of.

I actually think I like Dolphin Stadium (home of the Marlins) better than the Jake because if one sits in the nose bleed section and downs five large beers, squints real hard, one can see the downtown Miami skyline about the size of a pea. Being the only person in the entire upper deck it is very roomy and allows for easy movement.

On those same lines (perhaps not as sarcastic), I hear that the upper 3rd base line deck of the new Washington National's park has some flipping sweet views of the Capitol, monument etc. FYI.

Great American is a glorified Triple A ballpark with a Triple A team playing in it.

And Jacob's Field/Progressive Has so many championships to show for it to.

The team is bad, but is right there with San Diego, Colorado, Washington, and Pittsburgh for the bottom dwellers...additionally I don't know how any reasonable person can compare GABP with a Triple A ballpark.

^How do you compare it to the AAA ballparks you've been to?

Find me a Triple A ballpark that holds 43,000 people, has the best team Hall of Fame attached to it, and home to the first professional team in baseball.  You are a fool and your biases towards Cincinnati are becoming so old.  Really, I stick by my claim that in my personal opinion, I like Great American better than Progressive Field.  In my opinion Progressive is a fine ballpark but just seems fairly plain and generic.  At least at GABP you know you're at a Reds game due to the red seats, Reds mosaics at the entryway, the satues of Reds greats in Crosely terrace, the Nuxhall quote on the outside, steamboat in the outfield, etc.  The Jake felt like it could have been anyone's ballpark simply put down in downtown Cleveland.

Guys, I don't care if you disagree with someone's opinion, but lets try to avoid being obnoxious, biased and critical of other cities.

Not directed at anyone, I would simply like to avoid making my flame bigger by blowing out theirs.
