I just downloaded the software last night for Google Earth, and I must say it's pretty damned awesome. I was able to "fly" between (and through!) the 3D buildings in downtown Cleveland (see the graphic below), and I did the same for downtown Chicago. The 3D graphics are pretty basic, but I can't complain. After all, it's a free service. Check it out at http://earth.google.com/

I have to download this, and then play with it.  See you guys in a month!  ;)

I paid $25 for a year's worth of Keyhole about half a year ago, and now it has evolved into this and become FREE!  I want $12.50 back! :-)

At least I got to have the luxury of using this newest version for a month or so before all you common scum were able to climb on board and make everything load more slowly.

But seriously, it is great... if only they hadn't replaced the Dayton imagery with crappier coverage when they updated their database a while ago.  In case anybody is wondering, it is still accessible, at least for me, by logging into the "Legacy Database" instead of the "Primary Database."  That will also get you coverage for Youngstown and probably some other places that aren't covered in the new version.

Oh, and to you rail transit fans, be sure to look at the transit layers that you can turn on!

and I was all excited...

Google Earth downloads temporarily delayed

Thanks for your interest in Google Earth, but we're sorry we can't offer you a download right now. As you know, Google Earth is in beta, and we're still building out our ability to take on new users. We're making good progress, and expect to be able to accept new downloads shortly, so we recommend you check back daily at earth.google.com. We hope to be able to welcome you and other new planet surfers soon.

We appreciate your patience,

Sounds like everyone is downloading the software at the same time! I'm glad I got in on it early. I suspect it'll free up in a day or two. It's worth the wait. And, yes, I really like the transit overlay, but the railroads aren't in the right place! No big deal.

Dammit!  I want it now!  :D

Patience, young Grasscat....

^ Who are you fooling? You aren't young anymore ;)

:(

Maybe that's why I'm practically useless the day after drinking.

But seriously, it is great... if only they hadn't replaced the Dayton imagery with crappier coverage when they updated their database a while ago. How do you do this?

^ If yours is like mine, when it starts up there is a prompt to log in, with a dropdown "Server" list; from there I can choose Primary or Legacy database.  Or if already viewing stuff, under the File menu is "Logout" and also "Disable auto-login"... fiddling with those might do the trick, if they exist.  The only reason I suspect they might not exist is that I am still a subscriber for having previously paid for Keyhole, so it's possible I have access to some things that the masses don't.

I hope those are available to everyone, though.  For some reason when they updated the images a while ago, in some places the new images cover much less area, and instead of supplementing the old ones they just replaced them.  So places like Dayton, Youngstown, Milwaukee, and others are not really covered.  It would be a shame to not be able to see them!

No such luck :(

I guess the other images must not be available in the free version.

If it's important enough, the upgrade to the next level is $20 for a year, and presumably that allows you to access the other database.

the download link dfly gave is working for me

What's this "login" bullshit?

I got it to download, but I'm getting an error screen.

Never mind the previous post.  The reason for the error is the same as the reason it can't be downloaded from the Google Earth page.

When I tried to install it at work today, I got the same error message.  Just keep trying it at different times and it eventually will connect (at least it did for me)

BTW...I downloaded it today and it works just great.

I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW COOL IT IS!!!

I downloaded it today, too.  Its pretty cool.  It needs to be easier to move around on the map, however.  It's almost impossible to try and navigate through a city street with anything approaching ease.  I also wish it would hold more buildings in memory.  It's hard to get the full effect in NY, for example, because most of the buildings won't show at once.

i dl'ed this about a week or so ago and i am 100% addicted.

one thing i've been looking at a lot are housing projects.  it's mind-boggling how similar they are from city to city.  i decided to check detroit and got my first true glimpse at the large-scale urban decay in that city.  i'd post some pics, but i'm lazy, so if anyone's interested, just go to detroit and turn on the "housing projects" layer, which also labels particular decay areas.  blocks upon blocks of razed housing right in the middle of the city.  amazing to look at, but of course the reality behind it is sad and angering.

anyway, that's just my latest find, been checking out everything.  back to google earth...

Has anyone joined the BBS?  I registered but I haven't looked at it yet.

Just what I need--another forum.

<--- just joined today.  i have been perusing it for the past week though.  i browsed the planet on my own for a while and then checked the forum there for new things that i wouldn't have thought of on my own.

extremely addictive.  proceed with caution.

Google Inc., the world's largest search engine, is developing a beta version of its fascinating Google Earth geographical satellite imagery and mapping application for Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system, sources tell AppleInsider.

The application asks users to type in an address and will then "fly" the user from space to the address through satellite imagery. Users can then zoom in on the aerial satellite view of the search location, view buildings and landscapes, and tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings.

Google Earth also offers driving directions and lets users search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Additionally, the application includes multiple layer support, allowing users to annotate satellite views and combine multiple layers of information such as restaurant locations, driving directions and service stations.

In late June, Google deployed a free beta version of Google Earth on the Windows platform. The company said the application "utilizes broadband streaming technology and 3D graphics, much like a videogame, enabling users to interactively explore the world, either their own neighborhood or the far corners of the globe."

An advanced version of Google Earth for Windows includes GPS (Global Positioning System) compatibility for $20 a year, while a commercial version promises high-resolution printing and other professional tools for $400 a year.

Earlier this month, a pre-release version of Google Earth for Mac OS X that uses OpenGL rendering reportedly began making the rounds overseas. The 40MB application packs a hefty set of preferences, allowing users to tweak detail and color, and control the speed of their "flights."

Google Earth interfaces with Google's Web-based mapping service, Google Maps, in providing local search results and driving directions. However, sources say Google Earth for Mac OS X includes a superior set of satellite imagery when compared to the Google Maps Web service, offering additional clarity and a deeper zoom function.

Over the past year, search rivals have been launching new mapping services and related tools in an effort to capitalize on the lucrative search industry. At the Wall Street Journal "D" conference in May, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates previewed a tool similar to Google Earth called MSN Virtual Earth. Meanwhile, Amazon.com has launched a comparable project through its A9.com Web site that aims to provide photos of most U.S.-based businesses for an online service called BlockView.

Damn it!

Only on 10.4!!! Thanks for nothing Monte ;)

Sweet!!

Cincy-Rise, get Tiger you won't regret it.

What, you don't have 10.4?  Oh man, I have Panther at work and it is such a disappoint from Tiger.  You need to have Tiger, you can get it off eBay dirt cheap.

I know too many people that have upgraded to 10.4 and then downgraded back to 10.3.9... I am not missing too much without 10.4.

You are a liar, no one in their right mind goes back to 10.3.9 ;)

You are a liar, no one in their right mind goes back to 10.3.9 ;)

What!? You are a liar... I can name 3 people right now that have done this. When Panther first came out, it seemed a little unstable and I came close to downgrading back to Jaguar.

Name 5 things that I am missing out on that I cannot do with Panther... and then get back to me! ;)

(besides the fact that I use a few smaller apps that will not run on a 10.4)

Newer Mac Mail

Newer Adress Book

Upgraded Safari

Dashboard

Expose

iDVD

Garageband

Better USB & Firewire support

Larger driver list

Most compatitibility with 3rd party devices

Spotlight

Not to mention all the latest video drivers and patches released in the latest 10.4.4 patch release:

The 10.4.4 Update delivers overall improved reliability and compatibility for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users.

It includes fixes for:

- SMB/CIFS and NFS network file services

- Bluetooth wireless access

- Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, RAW camera support, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers

- Spotlight indexing and searching

- AppleScript, iChat, DVD Player, and Safari applications

- Dashboard widgets: Calendar and Stocks

- Software Update and Sync Services

- compatibility with USB and FireWire devices and third party applications

- previous standalone security updates

I have a system at work that has 10.3 Panther and I see a major difference.  I have had zero problems with my Mac systems running 10.4.

Anyway I think I covered your 5, plus I was joking with you.  Notice the wink...

I know you were just joking man... I didn't take it seriously.

On a side note...

Newer Mac Mail - I use Gmail and Gmail's mail notifer, you click on the email and no waits. I also cannot use macmail due to my email being forwarded to my Treo

Newer Adress Book - I don't use the one I have. If I need to, I use Gmail or my Treo

Upgraded Safari - Only difference is the RSS feeds, I use NewslitePro... or you can use Firefox for free.

Dashboard - I use Konfabulator, free, plus thousands of downloadable widgets.

Expose - Expose is on 10.3

iDVD - Also on 10.3

Garageband - Also on 10.3

Better USB & Firewire support - I'm not sure how much faster firewire 800 can run, same goes for USB 2.0.

Larger driver list - I didn't have problems with drivers on 10.0 Jaguar

Most compatitibility with 3rd party devices - This is a main reason why I have not upgraded (as of yet).

Spotlight - One of the biggest reasons on WHY I WOULD upgrade (although there is 3rd party software that is similar)

It includes fixes for:

- Bluetooth wireless access - Never had any trouble with my bluetooth, and I use BT a ton (there is only BT 1.1 & 1.2, so I'm not sure how much more it could be improved?)

- Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, RAW camera support, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers - not sure if I would notice a difference in Audio & Video, but I'm sure it is a plus.

- Spotlight indexing and searching - Like I said above

- AppleScript, iChat, DVD Player, and Safari applications - Applescript, iChat, & DVD are included on 10.3.9 (they were a couple of years ago actually)

- Dashboard widgets: Calendar and Stocks - Konfabulator

- Software Update and Sync Services - Updater and Sync services are also on 10.3

- compatibility with USB and FireWire devices and third party applications - No problem here.

- previous standalone security updates - Same goes for Security updater. ;)

iDVD & Garageband didn't come with 10.3 although I know there were available for purchase.  They are included with 10.4 as part of iLife and are newer versions at that.

The newer Safari isn't just RSS feeds, there are also a bunch of bug and security fixes.

Konfabulator is a bloated program and doesn't run as smooth and intergrated as Dashboard.

You have made your point, you are now in the same boat as people that swear Windows 98 is just as good as Windows XP.

For me, spotlight is the biggest difference between Panther and Tiger. I regularly use several widgets too. Printing and PDF handling are much improved too.

you are now in the same boat as people that swear Windows 98 is just as good as Windows XP.

And you my friend, have fallen in the same boat that Apple had targeted within their marketing campaign! ;)

Truce! .... Truce! .... :-D

You are right, I am always looking for the next best thing.  A gadget junky at heart.  I thought it was Linux and for years I used Red Hat & Suse and it usually resulted in fustration.  Mac was a nice fit because of my UNIX bankground and it solved the fustrations I had with using Linux - no Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Office Suite.  Open Office is great but it is not perfect and the last thing you want to do is make a document in Open Office and send it to your boss and when he opens it in Word, the formating is all skrewed up.  That is why Linux will never get to the next level in the desktop world.

  • 1 year later...

Does it annoy anyone else to death that GoogleEarth has the Cincinnati marker...waaayyy too far north, and not even in city limits (its in Norwood)??

Doesn't bother me.

If you were from somewhere else...and wanted to see a Cincinnati aerial or check something out in Cincy.  You would type in Cincinnati, Ohio into the search bar....GoogleEarth would then proceed to take you to Norwood...not Cincinnati.  That bothers me a lot!

Its the center of the city, ironically. That's why Rookwood and all that excess big box retail nearby in Oakley is so sustainable.

I suppose I would be upset too.

One thing I noticed recently when looking at Cleveland - East 9the Street has the "Rock and Roll Boulevard" moniker labeled in the two closest zooms.

Its the center of the city, ironically. That's why Rookwood and all that excess big box retail nearby in Oakley is so sustainable.

Aside from the 'Center of Cincinnati' development in that area...its really not the geographic center of Cincinnati.  The geographic center would be more in the neighborhood of North Avondale, so that isn't even a excuse...I just expect more from the Google Empire!

The Cincinnati location bugs me, and it's the same on every online map site, it seems.  Maybe it's a Navteq thing.  Or I suppose it has to do with the 45201 zip code being out there.

Not that it offends me or anything (not being from Cincinnati), but it's irritating because 9 times out of 10 if I want to search for just "Cincinnati" I mean downtown. So driving directions, etc. are a pain because you have to actually put a street address or something, and if I just want a quick map, I also need to enter something else into the search.

^yeah downtown is actually 45202 zip code...that is where the marker should be!

For driving directions, I just use 45202 instead of Cincinnati...but yeah, every map I remember using has done the same thing...
