August 23, 200717 yr Google Blogoscoped: Google Sky Released Google Earth (version 4.2) now comes with sky imagery, or a “virtual telescope,” as Google calls it. Google explains you can now explore star constellations, see planets in motion, or look at supernova explosions. The New York Times reports that these images were “stitched together from more than one million photographs from scientific and academic sources, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Palomar Observatory at the California Institute of Technology and the NASA-financed Hubble.” To see this in Google Earth, select View -> Switch to Sky from the menu. Google already has imagery of earth, moon and Mars available as online services. Wonder if the sky pictures will make it to the web as well? Another new feature in Google Earth is the addition of super-high resolution photo content, which you can see by adding the layer Primary Database -> Featured Content -> Gigapxl Photos. Unlike Google Street View, these photos however are only available for a few select places (like buildings), so there’s not a lot of random fun stuff to be found. http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-08-22-n49.html

Into the breach stepped Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) itself, with its own hot story: not the iPhone but the "Gphone." September 24, 200717 yr ZDNet: New version of Gmail being tested Gmail was launched on April 1, 2004, and has revolutionized the way many of us use email. The interface has remained largely untouched since it launched, but get ready, it’s soon to undergo a change in what they describe as a “New Version”. Only a select few people have access to use the new interface — mainly employees and trusted people outside the company called “Trusted Testers“. Unfortunately, there are no leaked screenshots to look at yet, but if you are one of the lucky few testers, I would love to take a peek. How do I know they are working on a “New Version”? Well, Google lets every-day users who are fluent in both English and another language translate small snippets of English text into the language of their choice. This is how they can offer services in several languages without spending a dime on professional translators. Unfortunately, exposing sensitive information in this manner makes it hard to keep a secret. One of my readers, who wishes to remain anonymous, stumbled across an interesting snippet of text (which I confirmed exists) spilling the beans on a new version of Gmail that is either currently being tested, or about to be released to testing in short order. It’s small, but telling — here is a screenshot of the text he was asked to translate.

November 5, 200717 yr Google Press Release: Industry Leaders Announce Open Platform for Mobile Devices Group Pledges to Unleash Innovation for Mobile Users Worldwide MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.; BONN, Germany; TAOYUAN, Taiwan; SAN DIEGO, Calif.; SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (November 5, 2007) -- A broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies today joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders. This alliance shares a common goal of fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today's mobile platforms. By providing developers a new level of openness that enables them to work more collaboratively, Android will accelerate the pace at which new and compelling mobile services are made available to consumers. With nearly 3 billion users worldwide, the mobile phone has become the most personal and ubiquitous communications device. However, the lack of a collaborative effort has made it a challenge for developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers to respond as quickly as possible to the ever-changing needs of savvy mobile consumers. Through Android, developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers will be better positioned to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. The end result will be an unprecedented mobile platform that will enable wireless operators and manufacturers to give their customers better, more personal and more flexible mobile experiences. Thirty-four companies have formed the Open Handset Alliance, which aims to develop technologies that will significantly lower the cost of developing and distributing mobile devices and services. The Android platform is the first step in this direction -- a fully integrated mobile "software stack" that consists of an operating system, middleware, user-friendly interface and applications. Consumers should expect the first phones based on Android to be available in the second half of 2008. The Android platform will be made available under one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products. Next week the Alliance will release an early access software development kit to provide developers with the tools necessary to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform. Android holds the promise of unprecedented benefits for consumers, developers and manufacturers of mobile services and devices. Handset manufacturers and wireless operators will be free to customize Android in order to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. Developers will have complete access to handset capabilities and tools that will enable them to build more compelling and user-friendly services, bringing the Internet developer model to the mobile space. And consumers worldwide will have access to less expensive mobile devices that feature more compelling services, rich Internet applications and easier-to-use interfaces -- ultimately creating a superior mobile experience. Open Software, Open Device, Open Ecosystem "This partnership will help unleash the potential of mobile technology for billions of users around the world. A fresh approach to fostering innovation in the mobile industry will help shape a new computing environment that will change the way people access and share information in the future," said Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. "Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks. Our vision is that the powerful platform we're unveiling will power thousands of different phone models." "As a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, T-Mobile is committed to innovation and fostering an open platform for wireless services to meet the rapidly evolving and emerging needs of wireless customers," said René Obermann, Chief Executive Officer, Deutsche Telekom, parent company of T-Mobile. "Google has been an established partner for T-Mobile’s groundbreaking approach to bring the mobile open Internet to the mass market. We see the Android platform as an exciting opportunity to launch robust wireless Internet and Web 2.0 services for T-Mobile customers in the US and Europe in 2008." "HTC's trademark on the mobile industry has been its ability to drive cutting-edge innovation into a wide variety of mobile devices to create the perfect match for individuals," said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corp. "Our participation in the Open Handset Alliance and integration of the Android platform in the second half of 2008 enables us to expand our device portfolio into a new category of connected mobile phones that will change the complexion of the mobile industry and re-create user expectations of the mobile phone experience." "The convergence of the wireless and Internet industries is creating new partnerships, evolving business models and driving innovation," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer of Qualcomm. "We are extremely pleased to be participating in the Open Handset Alliance, whose mission is to help build the leading open-source application platform for 3G networks. The proliferation of open-standards-based handsets will provide an exciting new opportunity to create compelling services and devices. As a result, we are committing research and development resources to enable the Android platform and to create the best always-connected consumer experience on our chipsets." "Motorola has long been an advocate of open software for mobile platforms. Today, we're excited to continue this support by joining Google and others in the announcement of the Open Handset Alliance and Android platform. Motorola plans to leverage the Android platform to enable seamless, connected services and rich consumer experiences in future Motorola products," said Ed Zander, Chairman and CEO of Motorola, Inc. March 14, 200817 yr in biz news --- the euros finally caved in and the google takeover of doubleclick is done. i suppose in the near future you can expect tons of ads pasted all over the google site or something like that. google founders sergey brin and larry page came in today and talked to all the doubleclickers, but they were vague. it's been leaked internally that there is going to be a royal bloodbath and unless you are a programmer all heads will roll. so anyhoo that means my spouse will probably be losing a job. in the meantime, at least we for now have access to the fantastic google cafeteria. :|

March 16, 200817 yr It will -because the Android is an OS, while the iPhone is a phone. HTC and other companies will manufacture handsets for Android to run on while the OSX will only run on iPhone. Now, if the Android only ran on one phone, manufactured by Google then it'd be close, or I think Apple would "win".
March 27, 200817 yr i tell ya its rough in the biz world. its now getting a little bit nasty as the goog is taking over the dubclick. :whip: March 25, 2008 DoubleClickers Sow-er Over Facebook Ad This little piggy got acquired? We may never know who's behind a goofy yet somewhat mean spirited message sent to all DoubleClick employees on Facebook today. Some think it's a Googler who had his or her finger on the ad trigger. "Hi DoubleClick. Please stop gorging yourselves on all our food," reads the ad message, accompanied by a cartoon image of a slovenly piggy. It ends, "Maybe we won't fire you. Thanks." Ouch. The ad may be a reference to the integration of the two firms, particularly at Google's famed cafeterias in NY and CA. When a DoubleClicker grabs the last almond crusted pork tenderloin, don't expect a Googler to be happy about it. No matter who the culprit is, the ad evidently has ruffled the feathers -- or perhaps crisped the skin -- of a few DoubleClick staffers.
April 1, 200817 yr Google puts its eye on Cleveland Posted by Michael K. McIntyre March 31, 2008 19:30PM Categories: Top Story Google Maps, with a new feature that lets you tour much of greater Cleveland without leaving your office chair, might better be described as "ogle" maps. It's a fantasy land for a virtual drive down city streets, where the sun always shines (thank goodness it wasn't cloudy in October when they gathered pictures for the project); traffic never jams, and gas is a refreshingly affordable $0.00 per gallon... Presenting the elusive musky house.
May 15, 200817 yr http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/13/google-maps-adds-more-wikipedia-entries-and-geo-coded-photos/ If you go to Google Maps, you’ll notice there is now a “”More” button right next to “Street View”" and “Traffic.” If you click on it after getting a map, you will be given the options to tick “Photos” or “Wikipedia.” Ticking the first option populates teh map with geo-tagged photos provided by Panoramio. Ticking the second gives you geo-coded Wikipedia articles. For instance, I found entries on a New York City map for the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, the New York Yacht Club, and other landmarks. The more that Google can populate maps with data, the more useful they become. I’d like to see geo-coded Flickr photos on there as an option. Maybe Jerry Yang can negotiate that as an extra if any search deal goes through. Yelp reviews would also be cool. What other data overlays should Google add to the “more option? What other buttons would readers like to see as well? Update: Google has also integrated real-estate listings if you click on the “show search options” link. you can search by real estate, businesses, locations, user-created content, and mapped Web pages.

June 11, 200817 yr Check it out at http://maps.google.com On June 10, 2008, twelve more cities were introduced: Atlanta, Buffalo, Charlotte, Columbus (Ohio), Fresno, Jackson, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, Sacramento, St. Louis and Virginia Beach. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming was also introduced. This update also included a number of locations which are unattributable to camera icons as their recorded streets are not contiguous with those of adjacent featured cities. These unlabeled locations include Bakersfield, Cincinnati, Dayton, Death Valley National Monument, Greenville, Huntsville, Knoxville, Lexington, Omaha-Lincoln, Palm Springs, Reno, Rochester (New York), Sequoia National Park, Syracuse, Toledo, and Tulsa.
June 11, 200817 yr Google also unrolled its face-blurring technology today. For a good example of this check out Cincinnati's Fountain Square at the corner of Vine St. and 5th St.
June 11, 200817 yr Oh Sh!t this is kinda scary because I went to the 'Street View' of my house and there is a car in my driveway that I don't recognize :wow:

June 11, 200817 yr oh, here are more hours of fun. i still use it all the time for SF, but now I can cruise around Cincy any time I want. Cincinnati coverage is pretty wide too. Leads me to believe that at least that portion of the photos was taken around labor day weekend 2007.
June 11, 200817 yr Good for you, Cincy, Dayton, and Cbus! It was only a matter of time. Anyone want to join my newly-formed Church of Google?
June 11, 200817 yr Oh Sh!t this is kinda scary because I went to the 'Street View' of my house and there is a car in my driveway that I don't recognize :wow: Is somebody "creepin'" at your crib? :-o
June 13, 200817 yr I was reading up some articles on google streetview, especially ones from blogs. I guess the cars are labeled with google's name on it, so you definitely know what it's for. The camera mounting system is fairly crude though. They also hire out 3rd party drivers (from what I read) so I guess they aren't directly tied to google. There's occasional flukes where you actually see the drivers exiting the vehicles while the camera is still on. BTW, It appears they get these up fast. Ann Arbor was also added, and my old rental house still shows our recently removed Christmas lights on the chair. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toledo,+OH&ie=UTF8&ll=42.286683,-83.740357&spn=0.002988,0.006845&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=42.286185,-83.741648&panoid=z1wd1KsseD7PcRg4P97QaA&cbp=1,249.74976986780953,,0,-2.047959917126313 EDIT: I'm aware it says Toledo, not AA, but I was looking at Toledo first.
