Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann has become an election-year live wire.

"That's between the voters of the state and me," he said in an interview with Plain Dealer reporters and editors on Friday.

Well, Mr. Dann, I'm a voter and a life-long Democrat....and I voted for you in the last election. If you have any honor at all, you should resign.

Can a poll be added to this thread?  the question could be "should Marc Dann resign"?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

All statewide Democratic elected officials and legislative leaders are calling on embattled Attorney General Marc Dann to resign from office. But Dann is rebuffing the request.

“The work of the Office of the Attorney General matters more, and is far more important, than any one person,” Gov. Ted Strickland and a who’s-who of Democratic state leaders wrote to Dann. “In many, many cases it is all that stands between the people and the powerful. Sadly, we no longer have even the most remote hope that you can continue to effectively serve as attorney general and that is why we are asking for your resignation.”

Ohio lawmakers prep to impeach Dann; proceedings would be 1st in 200 years

By JIM PROVANCE

BLADE COLUMBUS BUREAU CHIEF

COLUMBUS - Lawmakers have begun preparing for what could be the first Ohio impeachment proceedings in nearly two centuries after Attorney General Marc Dann yesterday rejected calls from fellow Democrats to resign.

Democrats, including Gov. Ted Strickland, vowed to lead the impeachment march, and the head of the state party announced plans to essentially shun the attorney general in the wake of his admission that he had an extramarital affair with an employee at the same time that two other employees were being sexually harassed by a top aide who lived with him.

They're overreacting. As if this sort of thing isn't common in marriages that are failing. People who are most offended are probably just projecting.

David, are you smoking crack, again?

This isn't about him having an affair, it's about his conduct with his staff in office and the result that Ohio taxpayer, YOU AND I, will have pay for the investigation and the resulting slow down in the legislative process.

My point is it's a dumb and irrelevant thing to focus on. They should investigate his mafia ties.

I don't appreciate the smoking crack again remark, Mr. "classy".

I think all of the information will come out in the wash.  The "affair" portion is planted to destroy is credibility.  It's all a PR game now.

David, you don't know what "classy" is, remember!  :-D

And I don't appreciate all the mafia references........

Hey.... let's stop the name-calling.  I can hear this easily enough from the 10-year olds in my neighborhood.  We don't need it here.

He started it!

Heard that from the 10-year-old's as well.  Is even more meaningless when it comes from adults.

Typical Stewart.  Nothing new here.

Democrats move to impeach Dann

Ohio House Democrats this morning filed articles of impeachment against Democratic Attorney General Marc Dann, accusing the state's top lawyer of misconduct and malfeasance in office.

The Democrats said they want to remove Dann in the wake of a sexual harassment investigation in his office that concluded earlier this month with two top managers being fired and two other employees resigning. Dann also admitted to an extramarital affair with a staff member, and admitted that he wasn't prepared for the job of attorney general when he took office in 2007.

What a circus!!!

In Kwame Kilpatrick's case, they obtained text messages sent by him, proving his affair. When I talked to Verizon the other day trying to obtain transcripts of my OWN text messages they said it would violate a federal law to give me that information. I wonder how it's so easy for them to obtain it. Maybe there's different stipulations about corporate email and phone accounts or maybe it's a post-9/11 PATRIOT ACT sort of thing?

If its corporate it's a whole different ball game, since the "unit" is "property" of the city (or business, state, etc.).

So for a business I'm sure all that is backed up on a dedicated server administered by the city, using the Verizon services.

The Columbus Dispatch

Attorney General Marc Dann offered to resign today if the state legislature agreed not to pass a bill with a clause allowing an immediate investigation of his office, but legislative leaders refused, a state lawmaker said.

State Sen. Robert F. Hagan said Michael Harshman, Dann’s attorney, told him to offer Dann’s resignation this afternoon “within the hour” if the Senate removed an emergency clause in a bill giving the state inspector general the power to investigate.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A press conference by Attorney General Marc Dann will not be held and the 17th floor of the Rhodes Tower where his office is located is apparently on lock-down to protect sensitive documents that may be subject to investigation.

The State Highway Patrol is in the attorney general's offices, checking employee badges and monitoring to see if documents are being removed from the floor, sources told The Dispatch. Troopers were even searching the purses of employees leaving the offices.

Equipment seized; computers reportedly locked down

Investigators from the Ohio Inspector General's office descended on Attorney General Marc Dann's office shortly after 11 this morning, defying Dann's legal arguments that they had no right to investigate his office.

A state trooper was seen hauling video equipment from the attorney general's office in the Rhodes Tower.  Authorities also reportedly locked down computers operated by Dann and many of his top assistants.

Strickland must appoint successor

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann resigned this afternoon, just hours after the inspector general's office launched a raid on his office.

The embattled Democrat made the announcement in a joint appearance with Gov. Ted Strickland.  The governor called it a "sad day" for Ohio but said he is "pleased" Dann quit.

Strickland said he hasn't considered whom he will appoint to succeed Dann, but would start the process today.  He said the next attorney general should possess "maturity, experience and management ability" and be someone with "great integrity."

Marc Dann Resigns

Published by DP

Under immense political pressure from his party and Governor Ted Strickland (right), Ohio attorney general Marc Dann (left) resigned late this afternoon

Just one day after Ohio House Democrats filed nine articles of impeachment against him and an inspector general investigation was authorized, Attorney General Marc Dann resigned late this afternoon at a hastily arranged news conference in the state capital. Standing beside him while he made the announcement was governor Ted Strickland, who later said that no deals were used to entice Dann to step down. First Assistant Attorney General Tom Winters will head the office until Strickland appoints a permanent replacement and they will have to run against a Republican challenger in November’s general election to complete the rest of Dann’s term (ending in January 2011).

You could run a caption contest to discern the look on the governors face.

It is not too much to ask to have public officials that are competent, respectful and honest.

Buh Bye Mr. Dann.

OSU dean replaces Dann

Temporary appointment out to regain public's trust

BY JON CRAIG | [email protected]

COLUMBUS - Gov. Ted Strickland took some of the politics out of the Attorney General's Office on Wednesday by appointing Ohio State University's law school dean to replace shamed Democrat Marc Dann, who quit May 14 under threat of impeachment and multiple investigations of wrongdoing.

The Democratic governor's temporary appointment of Nancy Hardin Rogers, 59, to serve through November's special election was praised by most. Former Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken, for instance, said Strickland's choice "just shows how smart he is."

Dann admits guilt to criminal charges

By Laura Bischoff | Friday, May 7, 2010, 11:46 AM

For two years, former attorney general Marc Dann insisted that while he made mistakes, he committed no crimes. But on Friday, May 7, Dann pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor ethics charges in the scandal that forced him to resign, damaged his reputation and finances and destroyed his marriage.

Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Ted Barrows sentenced Dann to $1,000 in fines and 500 hours of community service, plus court costs. Dann told the judge that he was unable to pay the fines until next week.

Dann said he would report the convictions to the disciplinary counsel of the Ohio Supreme Court and make an argument that he should be allowed to continue practicing law.
