Posted May 3, 200817 yr Wouldn't it be neat if Cincinnati bid for the U.S. Grand Prix as a street race? The USGP will not be returning to Indianapolis in the near term. Currently, Formula 1 has no firm plans to return to the U.S., but definitely wants to race here again. In fact, F1 would not be opposed to holding two USGPs in different locations (probably not as close to each other as Cincly and Indy, though). There has been some talk about bringing it back to Las Vegas and racing around the outside of the casinos as was done in the early '80s. Instead (or also), what if Cincinnati, with its exciting hills and curves, hosted the race? My idea would have the course start by PBS, past the ballpark, to part of Mt. Adams, back through a bit of OTR, then heading downtown and back to the stadium. The terrain changes and some narrow turns would undoubtedly lead to comparisons to the Monaco GP, arguably the most celebrated race on the circuit. Visiting foreigners would love the location and learn that our inland cities can have charm as well. And, they would bring TONS OF MONEY with them, taking advantage of the weak dollar.
May 3, 200817 yr That would be sweet... but I can't imagine how they would set it up in Mt. Adams with the narrow streets... But how cool would that be!
May 3, 200817 yr F1 is really rather boring, once you get past the spectacle. Those foreigners wouldn't find Cincinnati sufficiently glamorous — and there isn't a racing tradition to overcome a lack of swank. Vegas, SoCal, or Miami I could see.
May 3, 200817 yr I can definitely see a return of the USGP in the near future. With rumors all over the place of the Andretti kid joining Honda next year and the possibility of Danica Patrick (a single IRL win does not make one F1 caliber), F1 will want to capitalize on that. Add in the fact that they're wanting to add more street circuits to the schedule, the addition of Valencia and Singapore this year and Ecclestone wanting to move the French GP to the streets of Paris, a Cincy GP would be amazing. What better of a way to market the city than the most popular and watched sport in the world behind soccer. The spending power and money in this sport is amazing, with over 1,000 employees traveling to every race with just the racing teams alone. My dream was always a lap beginning along 5th St. downtown (how sweet would it be to have cars passing Fountain Square at 200 mph) crossing the Ohio River on the Big Mac bridge, going through Newport, across the Licking through Covington then across the Bailey Bridge and back onto 5th. But the logistics of having a race in 2 states would probably be too much. Maybe something along the soon to be created new Mehring Way through the Riverfront Park. Create a Monaco-esque effect with all the yachts tied up along the riverbank. One can only dream... And I always thought I was the only one on here that's a fan of F1

Those foreigners wouldn't find Cincinnati sufficiently glamorous — and there isn't a racing tradition to overcome a lack of swank. Vegas, SoCal, or Miami I could see. You're probably right. I highly doubt F1 has much of a fan base in this area, look at the Indy failure for proof. And F1 definitely likes the glamor. But, Detroit did have a GP...
May 4, 200817 yr It's true that F1 does not have a big fan base in Cincinnati or Kentucky. But where in the US does besides Indy and cities with a lot of immigrants? There are many F1 fans in the US, but they are spread out across the country and location isn't as much of an issue to the hardcore fans. The USGP was at Watkins Glen for many years -- a remote area in upstate New York. Mt. Adams work for F1. Remember that passing generally only happens in "passing zones" and doesn't happen that often anyway. The cars are small; you really have to be right up on an F1 car to see how small it is as compared to even an Indy Car. I don't think the "Indy Failure" was due to a lack of race fans in the Indianapolis area. Racing is the #1 passion of the state of Indiana (with basketball a close second). They love it all, too -- Indy Cars, NASCAR, F1, dirt, midgets, sports cars, motorcycles, drag racing on & on. The loss of Indy's USGP can be placed directly on the pissing match between Tony George and Bernie Ecclestone.
May 6, 200817 yr ^ Did you ever attend any of the USGPs at Indy? Unfortunately I've never been to a F1 race before. The year I finally get out of school and have a little bit of money they take it away from me. So next year it looks like I'll be booking a trip to Montreal to see the Canadian GP. And thank God there's a race this weekend, The one negative about F1 is how spread out the circuit is, There's sometimes weeks in between races, I can't stand all the down time.
May 6, 200817 yr Ha, they could FLY down Central, then turn around at Broadway Commons and...... getting carried away! That would kick ars!!! I'll talk to Carl. "The Great American Grand Prix"

Yes, I was at the 2005 race :( I think that the limited schedule is somewhat charming in that it makes each race more special and is more representative of the rest-of the-world's-approach to work. NASCAR is the typical American over-worked slog.
May 9, 200817 yr WOW!! A two state Grand Prix across the Ohio river would be a one of a kind race. Lots of viewing opportunities by the river & bridges. Sounds too exciting compared to all the boring racecourses they are accustomed to though. The drivers would lose focus & end up in the river... :-o Plenty of advertising opportunities on those bridges too!
May 9, 200817 yr After checking out some pictures, you know how awesome it would be to see the worlds most high tech race cars zooming North by the Ascent onto the historic Roebling Bridge & braking hard into the corner possibly ending up on the lawn of the Freedom Center! and thats just a half mile! *catching breath* now onto Mt Adams...
May 20, 200817 yr Monaco week! The greatest spectacle in all of motorsport and perhaps all of sports. I'm gonna say BMW get their first ever win this weekend, with Kubica (although Heidfeld is my favorite driver). Alonso the other surprise comes in second with Hamilton in third.
May 20, 200817 yr We shall see! Hopefully there won't be too much talk of prostitutes and Nazi-themed S&M play. I'd rather focus on the racing.
June 1, 200916 yr I met a girl last night that said that she worked for Cincinnati Grand Prix. She was telling me that they are really making some head way in getting a race in Cincinnati. Just be warned that I'm not sure how good her word is but I'm hoping she is telling the truth.
November 14, 201212 yr Grand Prix planner faces fraud charges http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20121114/NEWS/311140091/Grand-Prix-planner-faces-fraud-charges?odyssey=tab|topnews|text| I thought a Victory Parkway, Columbia Parkway, Madison Road sorta east side race would be cool. I guess you'd want it to swing by the casino now. oh well I doubt anybody is gonna get their money back on this, however. Dude had a FB page......
November 14, 201212 yr D'oh, just as Bernie said that he would like to have 7 Grands Prix here in the States. But Bernie talks a lot.
February 1, 201312 yr IRL has 2 Grand Prix races this season pretty close to us here in Ohio, Birmingham and Detroit. http://www.indycar.com/schedule
