Canton has a great building stock and one of Ohio's most interesting courthouses...

What a fantastic little city.  Beautiful buildings all around, and you didn't even show the McKinley memorial.  I look forward to visiting there this summer.

All of the rehabilitation downtown has been fantastic.  Just 10 years ago downtown was really sad looking.  Here is a picture of the building you called quality infill 10 years ago, now its one of the best

^Thanks for the image, what a difference. Do you have any images of the hotel that was demolished?

Oh man, now my comment looks stupid.

I got that picture from the cityofcanton.com website.  They have a large gallery of historic pictures, I believe they have a few with the hotel.

I like Canton.

OK, this definitely blows Louisville out of the water. For some reason the modern monstrosities lingered in my mind's image of Canton. Nearby Massillon doesn't do much for me, except for their quality mid-rises, and I couldn't find a thread on Alliance...

Good set; I don't know how I missed this one before.

The courthouse originally was symmetrical. I remember reading somewhere that the second tower was removed, along with other changes, during a remodeling. Too bad they did that!

I visited Canton en route to Pennsylvania in 2006 and was impressed despite a very dreary fall day. It looks like the improvements had progressed farther by the time you visited.

There are some photos of Alliance on the main page, but I will be posting a thread one of these days.

Canton looks better in these pictures than I have ever seen it.  I was born there, and remember downtown as extremely bustling as a kid.  There were several large department stores, and a number of theatres.  My grade school was at Cleveland Ave and 6th St, NW.  I think it is nearly 20 years since I've been back there, but one of these days....

One of the best photo tours of Canton I have seen on this or any other site.  Downtown Canton has improved greatly in the last 10 years or so.  Many upscale and casual restaurants have opened.  An art district has developed and there has been a pretty decent amount of new construction though no high-rises.  Canton really does need a new tallest to fill in and modernize the skyline.  Canton is medium sized city comparable to Youngstown, Reading, Pa., Scranton, Pa., Roanoke, Va., Peoria, Ill and Kalamazoo, Mi.  Canton seems to be much healthier than Youngstown at the moment.

An event called First Friday takes place the first Friday of every month downtown.  This event has been going on the past couple years and has brought real life back to downtown at night.  Live bands are at most bars and restaurants and the new art galleries are open during the night.  There is a good amount of pedestrian traffic between bars, restaurants and art galleries.

There are a couple large projects in the works or proposed.  The 13-floor Onesto Hotel which has been vacant since the mid 1970s is being completely renovated into luxury apartments.  An old large factory just a couple blocks from the downtown  center is planned to be turned into offices, retail and convention space.

^Unfortunatly the hercules factory renovation is at a standstill until they can get a loan.  I hope this happens soon since the project is soooo massive for Canton

I don't know what's happening at the Onesto, I toured it last fall and they had the demo finished.  I have not seen any outward signs of progress since.

First Friday is great, I will be down there this week.  The cadillac garage has been restored and will be open so i'm excited for that.  The owner did a really really beautiful job on the rehab.  I'll take a camera with me.

Wow I had no idea Canton had all this.  Its amazing that even though I have lived in Cleveland all my life the most I have seen of Canton is Foster Stadium.

How are the residential neighborhoods?

Just FYI, that's Fawcett Stadium. :)

Some of the neighborhoods immediately surrounding downtown are pretty rough, some of the roughest in Canton.  I live about 5 minutes bike ride from downtown and the neighborhoods get slightly better from there.  There are some beautiful old neighborhoods too, Ridgewood, Harter Heights and Hills and Dales come to mind.  Most of the homes are comparable to Cleveland working class neighborhoods, think "A Christmas Story"

I'll have to load some of my own photos of Canton sometime soon.

Thanks, but even if you're not into football, these things get drilled into your head when you live in the Massillon/Canton area. :D

Yea I can definitively see that.
