FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio -- The legal battles might be over, but residents downwind and downstream from a future Morrow County landfill are preparing to watch what goes into it and comes out.

"Oh yeah, they'll be under surveillance," Bob Durbin said. "We won't be able to trespass, but they will see a car with someone with binoculars."

Durbin is the general manager and a resident of Candlewood Lake, a gated community in northern Morrow County with 557 homes and 380 campground lots. The community sprang up in 1972 around a man-made, 280-acre lake fed by Whetstone Creek. It is about 3 miles southeast of where the landfill is to be built.

I've attempted to do Mt. Gilead four times and it was always too dark or rainy; this time was no exception.

Looks cute and they have a pharmacy, radioshack, and a hardware store snugly close together for small-town urbanites. I wonder how that Chinese restaurant is, since we don't have a good one Downtown.

I had dinner there last night; it was nothing special, but it was good.

Dammit.

Great pics as usual, Ink, of a place I know well.  The Capitol Theatre is a truly great retro place to see a movie, by the way... very small, pressed tin ceiling, and fantastic popcorn.

Looks almost Appalachian.

We haven't got many Morrow County projects in the thread - like basically none.  But we've got one now.  From today's Dispatch article about Central Ohio projects receiving state tax credits:

Dollar Tree is planning a $125 million, 1.2 million-square-foot distribution operation in Morrow County that will serve Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores.  The tax credits have an estimated value of $1.6 million and the 400 jobs will have an annual payroll of $12.8 million.

“Dollar Tree is a large and growing organization,” said Gary Philbin, Dollar Tree’s president and CEO, in a statement.  “We currently operate more than 735 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores in the state of Ohio and we are excited about our new distribution center project in Morrow County. This new facility will enhance our supply chain, provide convenient access to our network of stores."

The $125 million, 1.2 million square foot Dollar Tree/Family Dollar distribution center is set to open next month next to an I-71 interchange in southern Morrow County.  Bringing with its opening is 400 jobs and some much needed economic development to the area.  Also bringing with its opening is increased traffic - which predictably brings complaints - even in this heavily rural county.

The Mt. Gilead exit off 71 (at 61) is looking a lot different these days.

Another huge warehouse is up next to the Dollar Tree Warehouse and the Lion's Den is now a Sheetz
