Posted May 12, 200817 yr I was cleaning house and looking through a good portion of my computer files when I stumbled across these random Chicago pictures I had taken in late April/early May last year (2007). I'll admit I'm not the best urban photographer, nature photography is more of my specialty; nonetheless, I hope you all like these pics. Oh yeah and I used two different cameras so the sizes may vary from pic to pic  I am fortunate enough to have a friend who used to live in a high-rise across from Soldier Field (the South Loop neighborhood) so I had a home base whenever I took the train into the city. Unfortunately for me and my college town, the nearest Metra station is a 15 mile drive to the east........but it's still better than driving the whole way in! Enjoy! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Skyline Hancock Lake Point Tower Lake Shore Drive Michigan Avenue Views from my friend's former-condo Planetarium Anti-War Gathering The Indiana shore in the distance That state up north (well, out east in this case) Bus-Only road to the left; Metra and freight rail to the right (obviously) Sun setting
May 12, 200817 yr Great pictures! Ironically, a friend I recently graduated with just purchased a condo in what looks like the same building you took that from.
May 12, 200817 yr Beautiful photos! Makes me want some more Chicago; I'm planning to go in about a month, but I don't know if I can wait that long.

May 13, 200817 yr I've reached an odd state of complacency with Chicago. The city kind of bores me. I'm been there SO many times because it's a hop, skip and jump form Milwaukee. So the appeal of a foreign place has worn off. But at the same time, not living there has kept me from becoming familiar with the cultural stuff that locals enjoy. Oh well, that's not at all a reflection on the city. It's a great place. Here's a fun fact on Lake Point Tower though. One of the 5 students of Mies that designed the tower, Charlie Rice, is a good friend of my mother. I've had a few meals with him and last time I was over I asked him about the curves. Mies was all about simplicity, so I thought that the curved building was a little too eccentric to be Mies. Charlie said that was his idea. Originally the building had four sides, meaning it was sort of "+" shaped. And he curved it so that every joint could be the same, eliminating the need for corners. I thought that was a cool idea, but engineers discovered wind load issues so it had to be redesigned. John Heinrich (Rice's colleague) redesigned it, keeping the curved nature, but making it three-sided. This kind of defeated to original purpose because now there are three joint types, but it gave the tower a unique identity. So that's the story.
