I don't know if it has been mentioned on this thread, but the turf at Yankee Stadium is being installed by Sports Construction Group, a small Cleveland company which has done major turf installations throughout the nation.

So, even though the Yankees are one of the most popular and profitable sports franchises in the world, their stadium construction is of course heavily subsidized by the local governments and the federal government (in the form of tax free bonds).

But Kucinich is now sniffing around some of the financial engineering behind the bond issuance and allegations about impropriety are flying...

Priciest Real Estate in Town: $400k for Two Seats

Yankee Stadium, Citi Field—let's forget about those new inner-city stadia with their paltry 50,000+ capacities. Instead, let's head across the Hudson to fabulous East Rutherford where, by the looks of this new WCBS 880 photo gallery, the $1.6 billion new Giants Stadium (capacity: 82,500) is chugging along in advance of its 2010 opening.

Hey, speaking of the new Giants Stadium, the Jets recently auctioned off the personal seat licenses—the cost paid for the right to buy season tickets—for the two best seats in the house, and a mortgage broker shelled out $400,000 for the pair. The Post caught up with the (lucky?) buyer, who'll still have to shell out $7,000 per seat per season for the actual tickets. He said, "Although part of the mortgage business is in turmoil, this is an opportunity to invest in my business - and to further demonstrate our loyalty to the New York Jets." Hopefully that loyalty will be returned when Brett Favre is looking to buy a Jersey McMansion and needs a loan.

Yanks move home plate, rubber to new stadium

Associated Press

updated 4:22 p.m. ET Nov. 8, 2008

NEW YORK - During the Yankees’ last game at their old stadium in September, players dug their hands into the ballpark dirt to take some home along with the memories.  On a hushed, rainy field Saturday, a group of Bronx youths and a few former stars used shovels to dig into the soil around home plate and the pitcher’s mound, filling dozens of blue and white buckets.  Workers then removed the plate and pitcher’s rubber, and the group walked across the street to the Yankees’ shining new stadium to mix the old dirt with the new.

I like it, looks like a euro soccer stadium.. I'll never go there, but it still looks cool..

The Red Bulls Stadium looks great on the inside.  It does have a very euro soccer feel with the rooftop sunscreen.  They won't have the MLS Cup to open up the new stadium because it will be at Columbus Crew Stadium instead .

Mets: New ballpark will still be called Citi Field

Updated: December 2, 2008, 7:36 PM EST

NEW YORK (AP) - Citi Field will remain the name of the New York Mets' new ballpark following a government bailout the team believes will help the struggling bank survive its economic crisis.  Citigroup agreed in 2006 to pay the Mets $400 million over 20 years for naming rights to the stadium, scheduled to open next year.  Two New York City councilmen said last week that the $800 million ballpark's name should be changed to Citi/Taxpayer Field.

Wait, where's the Red Bull Stadium at? Why do we keep talking about putting stadiums in mixed use environments then never follow through? I know it would be a nightmare for residents but damn, at least get a bunch of retail and maybe some office space around there. It's NYC - they can make it happen. I don't see a need for all that green space. I'm not hating - it's a nice stadium, I'm just saying why not go all out.

And why the hell did they choos the name Red Bulls? I keep picturing giant red bull can inflatables on top of the roof.

The name of the organization is Red Bull New York while the actual team name is New York Red Bulls when the team was sold to Red Bull sometime in 2006. Red Bull also owns a team in Austria called Red Bull Salzburg. The stadium they are building is top class and is way better than the other cookie cutter soccer specific stadiums in MLS (Colorado Rapids, Chicago Fire, Real Salt Lake, and Dallas Fire all have very similar looking stadiums). Football is the most popular sport in the world as well as the most played sport by kids in the U.S. The foundation is set here and its only a matter of time before it will be compared to the big 4 sports here.

The Stadium is in New Jersey NOT NYC.

So NYC has pretty much built 2 new MLB ballparks, 1 new NFL stadium, 1 new MLS stadium, and possibly a new NBA arena.  That's ridiculous.

BTW, I'm liking the interior of the new Yankee Stadium as it still reminds me a lot of the old Yankee but with some modern finishes.  Citi Field on the other hand looks somewhat cookie-cutter for the new wave of ballparks (see St. Louis, Philly).

They should have done something with that trashy Madison Square before anything.

How exactly is it trashy?

It sucks. It's ugly and it belongs in Toronto. I've never seen such a large scale building of high importance with a gross, simplistic pattern wrapping around it. The building is dehumanizing. Don't get me wrong, it definitely fits. New York isn't about erecting buildings as monuments. It's purely about money. If NYC truly valued quality architecture and civic concern at the time it was built, they would have just kept the old Pennsylvania station which was just..absolutely stunning. I'm sure Madison Square Garden will be demolished as soon as the city figures out what can replace it at a higher assessed value. Buildings like that in Manhattan only last 30-40 years. The old Pennsylvania station only lasted about 50. It's time is up.

You just can't argue for the existence of Madison Square Garden unless you're strictly talking in terms of economics. Look at these Corinthian columns. I'm offended and I don't even live in New York.  :|

Sadly, due to the size of Manhattan, functionality can come before beauty.

You can't possibly convince me that the "new" Penn Station is more functional than the old one.

The same can be said for Union Station in Chicago.

So having it below MSG is the same functionality of the same track space BUT.. no MSG?

It's a huge, prestigious transit hub without a face. The old Pennsylvania Station sort of represented its grandiosity. Just look at those overbearing columns. It was an arrogant building that lived up to its hype. Penn Plaza just blends in with everything else in Midtown and MSG looks unnatural and out of place. The round shape alone is obnoxious.

In a way, Madison Square Garden is similar in its significance - just think about all of the athletes and performers that say "my dream is to one day play at Madison Square Garden blah blah blah". But you see the site in person and you think "..."That's THE Madison Square Garden?!" Snore.

and what does MSG and Penn Station have to do with New Major League Ballparks?

Quick, who do I sound like?

^ Yeah, Yankee Stadium was old.. but it was still amazing.. the same ground that all those legends played on.. it just won't be the same.

funny but it's not just old penn station --- every single building in that first picture is gone. c'est la vie.

I'm sorry, but you have NO clue as to what you are talking about in regards to Toronto. If you're going to trash talk a city, then atleast trash talk one you've spent more then a day or two in! Toronto is filled with beautiful buildings! I especially like their station. It may not be Penn Station, but its still very nice! And yes, I prefer Penn Station over the Garden as well!!!

Pretty amazing looking, even though it won't have the history of the old stadium.

I agree with the comments about MSG being kind of dumpy, both inside out, from the basement transit station to inside the arena, the toilet seat really needs to go.  Some modernist buildings have aged nicely, but this one took a turn for the worst.  I'd expect the replacement to be world class, and a much better anchor to the urban environment.

The LIRR, Amtrak and the subway stations have been renovated and look pretty good.  Considering all four systems were built at different times, with different designs it could be much worse.

Yeah, the four stations are fine for now, especially with the LIRR eventually coming into Grand Central.

Not snow, nor controversy, nor government bailout of CitiBank shall keep the construction of the new Shea Stadium from its spring deadline.  Here's some new aerial views of the progress from the WCBS helicopter taken on 12/23/08 (w/snow) and 1/5/09 (w/o snow).

I love Citi Field's design.

and both NYC ball parks are under scrutiny.  Gotta love it.

I agree! Probably the best new ballpark in the nation ... Busch is pretty damn sweet too.

you like your throwbacks! i like citi & busch fine, but they aren't really very exciting.

me i'm waiting on the new florida stadiums. i'm hoping for some groovyliciousness.

The best thing about Busch is its location and layout.  It is connected to the city's light rail I believe, and it is freeing up a bunch of new develop-able land that will probably turn out being like Cincy's The Banks project.  Oh yeah, and the sweet city views much like the Jake in Cleveland.  St. Louis got it right.

^ The open outfield exposing the arch is incredible.

Any new photos from Red Bull Park??

I flew directly over it on sunday on my flight from Glasgow but couldnt get my camera out in time.

Thanks a lot, looks like its coming along nice and cant wait to see the finished product. I wish more MLS teams would follow the red bulls lead and built less generic stadiums
