En Stade: New Looks at New Yankee and Giants Stadiums

I love Citi Field's design.

I agree! Probably the best new ballpark in the nation ... Busch is pretty damn sweet too.

AV66STL.jpg

You can't tell from this pic, but the lights have a cool old-school iron look:

Beautiful brick entrance:

stlbpk03.jpg

I'm not a fan of the new stadiums trying to look as if they are old. There is something very fake about them.

^Agree completely.  I guess it's OK that New Yankee stadium is taking design cues from old Yankee Stadium, but from Camden Yards onwards, the whole brick arches thing has gotten out of control; in most cases trying to evoke some historic/nostalgic sentiment from a history that never existed for that team, city or site.  Barf already.  Especially when in a parking lot, like Citifield- seriously, why the f does anyone care what Citifield's facade looks like given the setting?

One of the very few refreshing exceptions is the Prog which really isn't sentimental or old timy at all.  Not that I'm unbiased...

While the whole retro look is pretty pathetic, the new stadiums have tended to take advantage of urban locations and of site lines. I love watching the games where the outfield spills into a skyline or large body of water.

I think it's alright to take a retro approach if it's done right.  Except that 95% of these new stadiums taking that approach fail miserably.  At the same time, I don't want some contemporary blob.  That's okay for in the middle of a desert, but doesn't lend itself to an effective integration into the urban fabric.

I'm really not that big of a fan of Citi Field.  It's kind of boring looking to me

But what really got my attention was this photo below...

My+Pictures+524.jpg

It got featured on an ESPN show as a "screw up".  It looks like the seats have zero legroom.  However, its likely that this section of seats haven't been bolted down yet and are temporarily resting here.  At least that's what some commenters on the blogsite think.  Hope they're right!

http://slidingintohome.blogspot.com/2009/03/312-new-stadium-photo-update.html

LOL that's awesome.  But yeah, I doubt they are bolted down yet.  Look at the large aisle behind them.  Clearly these have plenty of space to move back.

Wow.. that stadium is going to be amazing, can't wait to go to some games this summer.

Construction Watch: One More to Cement the Stadium Fatigue

Let's see. Yankee Stadium? Nope. Citi Field? Not that one either. The new Giants Stadium? Good guess, but incorrect. What we have here is yet another new stadium in the metropolitan area, flying under the radar out in Harrison, New Jersey. What team will call it home? Here's a hint: it's called Red Bull Park. Still nothing, huh? It's for the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, and when we looked at the plans for the new $220 million stadium, it was just one part of a massive mixed-use development that would also include 800 apartments—all on the shores of the bucolic Passaic River. Of course, those were the heady days of 2006, so your guess is as good as ours as to the fate of that master plan.

CURTAIN RISES ON AMAZIN' NEW BALLPARK

March 30, 2009

The outfield fences are black, topped by orange trim, and both dugouts are green. The lights were shining, and the giant red Pepsi-Cola sign sat beyond the right-field porch.  Citi Field opened up yesterday, and while the Mets weren't in action and the stadium isn't completely finished, the field is at least playable.  St. John's and Georgetown proved that, playing 8½ innings in the new ballpark's first event.  It was an early test of the stadium and field itself -- especially since it rained -- and Met officials were happy with Day One, in which their park looked impressive.

ARCHITECTURE REVIEW

Two New Baseball Palaces, One Stoic, One Scrappy

By NICOLAI OUROUSSOFF, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Published: April 2, 2009

American stadium design has been stuck in a nostalgic funk, with sports franchises recycling the same old images year after year.  Still, if you have to go with a retro look, New York City could have done worse than the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.  Both were designed by Populous (formerly known as HOK Sport Venue Event) and are major upgrades over the stadiums they replaced, which had been looking more and more dilapidated over the years.  Both should be fine places to spend a few hours watching a game.

Dirt, Seats And Bases Available From (Old) Yankee Stadium Auction

2009_05_yankauc2.jpg

Get your old home plate from Yankee Stadium! (Richard Drew/AP)

After paying NYC $11.5 million for the right to auction off items, the Yankees are selling off remnants of its old stadium. Yankees COO Leon Trost said at a press conference, "We're talking about making available pairs of seats, commemorative seats, seat backs, seats from the bleachers, foul poles." Heck, there's even a chunk of freeze-dried grass for $79.99 or a 4' by 80' piece of sod from between second and third bases for $6,000.

The auction is being conducted by Steiner Sports; Brandon Steiner said, "Our goal is to save as much as we can. People can laugh about the dirt and laugh about the brick, but those are memories we can savor." Newsday reports the items will be rolled out over time. One much-mentioned item is a piece of the wall that Derek Jeter fell over to catch a pop-up during a 2004 game against the Red Sox. It's not online yet, but a Yankee Stadium seat is ($749).

However, not everyone is happy with the deal: Frequent Yankees critic Assemblyman Richard Brodsky said, "The carcass of Yankee Stadium is city property and it’s clearly worth more than $11.5 million. I know no good reason why taxpayers, having built the new stadium, should not benefit more from the sale." Trost responded to Brodsky's stance, "I say that [brodsky] continues to grandstand, that he has an agenda that we don't know what it is. We hope his constituency likes what he's doing, because they're paying for it." In this arrangement, the Yankees cover the cost of removing all the seats and other items, instead of the city bearing the cost.

Speaking of spending money on Yankees items, a NY Post reader offered this analysis of how crazy the prices are at the new stadium: "Option 1: Two tickets to Tuesday night, June 30, Mariners at Yanks, cost for just the tickets, $5,000. Option 2: Two round-trip airline tickets to Seattle, Friday, Aug. 14, return Sunday the 16th, rental car for three days, two-night double occupancy stay in four-star hotel, two top tickets to both the Saturday and Sunday Yanks-Mariners games, two best-restaurant-in-town dinners for two. Total cost, $2,800. Plus-frequent flyer miles."  :-o

Construction On New Meadowlands Stadium Ahead Of Schedule

Thursday, July 9, 2009

2007_09_New-Meadowlands-Stadium-701517.jpg

Meadowlands Stadium in East RutherfordMeadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the soon-to-be home field of the New York Giants and Jets football teams, is under construction and months ahead of schedule. The stadium will still open during the projected time frame of December 2009 to April 2010.

Meadowlands Stadium is replacing Giants Stadium, with the construction taking place nearby in the parking lot. Giants Stadium will be demolished when Meadowlands is completed to free up more parking lot space.

The new open-air stadium will have 82,500 seats, including 200 luxury suites, four large video boards in each of the four corners, and a fenced in security perimeter. It will be the second-largest stadium in the NFL behind FedExField, home to the Washington Redskins outside of Washington D.C., with a capacity of 91,704.

Environmentally friendly initiatives are being taken to create one of the greenest sports venues there is. Meadowlands Stadium will be partially built with 40,000 tons of recycled steel and stadium seats will be constructed from scrap iron and recycled plastic. Water use and construction waste are being cut, and concessions will use biodegradable utensils, plates and cups. Construction costs are currently estimated at $1.6 billion.

The opening of Meadowlands Stadium follows the open of Citi Field in March 2009 and of the new Yankee Stadium in April 2009, both in New York City.

Iconic facade comes down from old Yankee Stadium as part of demolition

BY Oren Yaniv

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Even Babe Ruth would have trouble recognizing the old Yankee Stadium now.  The beloved ballpark's iconic facade - the white scalloped frieze that ran above the scoreboard and billboards - is being pulled down as demolition kicks into high gear.  "It's an end of an era," Yankees fan Maria Abbamont, 44, said Thursday as she watched some of the panels be removed Thursday.

'Awesome' opening of Red Bull Arena has players excited for future

By Frank Giase/The Star-Ledger

red-bull-arena-opening-fans-77fbda81d3cf68b8_large.jpg

It was 15 years in the making, going through countless redesigns. Owners and general managers tweaked the plans, then threw them out and began again.

The last ownership group wanted a stage at one end for concerts, and we would have gladly taken that if someone would have just built the darn thing already. But in the end, when it all shook out, Red Bull Arena is what it should have been all along, a soccer-only stadium where all other events take a back seat

Red Bull Stadium looks good on the outside.  But it is positively dazzling on the inside.  And this stadium shows just how far the MLS has come in the past 10 years.  The first MLS soccer-only stadium opened in Columbus at a frugal $22 million in 1999.  This year brings a new soccer-only stadium for Philadelphia and the $200 million Red Bull Stadium for New York.

Barclays Center Gets Its Roof

By: NY1 News

The roof is on, and the Barclays Center is one step closer to being finished.

The future home of the Brooklyn Nets was “topped” on Thursday.

The arena at Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues will not only house the NBA's Nets, but will also host other sporting events and an array of concerts and performances.

It is scheduled to open this September with a performance by Brooklyn's own Jay-Z.

Sky's the limit on pre-fab towers for Atlantic Yards developer

4:30 AM, February 8, 2012ι By  RICH CALDER

...FCR is currently seeking financing to build a prefabricated, 32-story residential building at the corner of Dean Street and Flatbush Avenue — the first of 16 towers slated for a once financially doomed project that also includes an under-construction arena for the NBA’s Nets.

Sanna said modular construction — where whole sections are built off-site and then attached to the building like Legos — could slash costs for the $4.9 billion Atlantic Yards development by at least 25 percent under “modest” estimates...

Developer Bruce Ratner took the Post on a tour last week of the Barclays Center construction site in Brooklyn.

The Nets, who play their final game in New Jersey tonight, will be moving into their 18,200-seat future home in Brooklyn next season. The arena opens in September with a series of concerts by rap icon Jay Z, a part-owner of the Nets. Here is a transcript of some of the interview with Ratner, also a part owner of the Nets. You are a NJ Nets fan??? I didn't have an nba favorite, but all my friends were mostly Knicks or 76ers, with some Lakers and Celtics

thrown in. But I'm not exaggerating, I personally don't know of any Nets fans.

It’s a regional team, and also the disadvantage of driving [to Brooklyn] would be made up by being in a brand new arena and the excitement of a team playing in a new place -- all the energy that is going to go with it. What [having to travel from New Jersey to Barclays Center] gives up in transportation, it will make up in entertainment. I think a lot will come. They might not buy season tickets, but they’ll come to a lot of games whether it’s partial season-ticket packages or just tickets to some of the games.

Isn't their current arena just a couple years old? I guess the Nets will need another new arena to call home in another couple years...?? You know, to stay fresh??

I wouldn't feel like the move was such a raw deal if they kept the NJ name. The NY Giants, Jets, and Red Bulls play in NJ, after all. I don't know how anyone could be a NY sports fan. Or NJ, really. The sense of community is too diluted, especially when the teams are statewide or they play in a different municipality/state.

If NKY got a basketball or hockey arena, I wouldn't want the team to have Cincinnati's name attached. And I would be less of a fan if the Cbus Blue Jackets were the Ohio Blue Jackets. (Or, heaven forbid, if the Reds/Indians/Bengals/Browns/Cavaliers went statewide.) It's one of the fallacies of being a Buckeyes fan, especially if you're not an alum.

I think the Giants and Jets are a different situation.  Both of the played in NYC for years (the Giants for decades).  I think most people in NYC understand that they play in New Jersey because building these stadiums (at least with any semblance of cost effectiveness) is not really possible in a lot of the parts of NYC.

They both play in MetLife Stadium. They could have built a football stadium in Brooklyn instead of a basketball arena. Or they could have built the Red Bulls stadium there instead of in Harrison, NJ.

Whatever the reasons, NY seems to habitually give NJ the shaft when it comes to sports franchises. Stealing the Nets is the most egregious example to date.

That new arena in Newark (imho) always seemed more about Devils hockey. Unlike the Nets, the Devils have a strong fanbase and the franchisehas a history of success.

p.s. I think you're right ninja that it's harder for statewide teams to attract a core, critical mass of fans. This is especially true in a place like NJ where

it's so closely tied to Philadelphia and NYC. Fans of the Flyers and Rangers liked to point out how "lame" NJ was because when the Devils won the Cup, there was no place for a traditional parade. Now they have Newark.
