Forgotten by those heading to the big city of New England in the east or the quaintness of the Berkshires to the west, central Massachusetts is probably the path least traveled in the region. Fitchburg is a city with a population around 39,000 with a long, intact Main St.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yep, it's a boulder sitting right there. Guess they slapped a plaque on it and called it a day rather than move it.

 

 

 

 

 

The theater has been closed for some time.

 

Wide, one-way streets are never good for Main St USA. They need some traffic calming and a two-way conversion. I heard businesses are at least clamoring for the latter.

Good to see some new facades. That pizza place on the corner used to be a popular place to go for high school students, until they moved the school to the burbs, that is.

I have family there so I figured, why not? Also, there's an amusing note on the skateboard shop's door in case no one caught it.

Fitchburg was home to Fitchburg Engine Company, a preeminent manufacturer of high-quality steam engines for mills and factories from 1871 into the 1920s.

 

I know where a Fitchburg engine reposes. I think all or most of the parts are still there.

 

You always know something interesting about any town out there. I certainly didn't know that.
