I am the cell phone jinx - How often do you replace your cell phone?

So, this is the 5th cell phone that has died on me in 3 years.  :shoot:

Getting really sick and tired of having phones die, especially since its not cheap (Blackberry 8830).  I figure I've spent more than $1500 on cell phones in 3 years (gotta have the PDA or blackberry).  This can't be normal!!!

How are they breaking? My 8830 with Verizon had its center button stop working. I was able to have them send me a new one for free since it was within a year.

With Verizon, even on a two year contract, if your phone breaks after your first year, you can buy a new one at the two-year-contract price so long as you sign a new two year contract (it replaces the old one).

So, basically, I have a one-year replacement warranty for defects, and if it doesn't last the whole second year, i can replace it for relatively low cost.

All this said, I'm considering ditching my cell phone and getting a landline. I am increasingly missing the days of not being available 24/7.

Funny you posted this, I just got my "new every two" phone yesterday and now I wish I would have kept the old one.  The 'newer model" of the same phone I had previously seems to just be not as nice at all.  Ah well, it's just a device for making calls and I shouldn't overthink it I guess.

I get a new phone about every 6 months, but that's because I choose to ...

I sold this

to pay for this (16GB model):

The iPhone is honestly the best mobile phone I have ever used and with apps I actually use. I plan on upgrading to the new 3G iPhone with built in GPS as soon as it comes out and since T-Mobile is launching their 3G data service soon.

I clicked the wrong button.  I replace mine about every 12-16 months.  I get lots of product samples and I like boy toys with the latest bells and whistles.

Yeah, I like the toys too, and I probably would go a new phone every year if it weren't for the fact that they are breaking faster then that ;)

My problem with my 8830 is that the scroll works, but the center press and the rest of the buttons do not.  So I can't even answer an incoming call or start an application.  This is going to cut into my UO commute time browsing!

I would totally go with an iphone if it were available on verizon.  My vz contract is up in december and I can get the upgrade in august... I bought it in October last year from ebay, so I dunno if I can con them into the 1 year manufacturer replacement...

CDMA is soooooo lame. ;)

8830 is dual CDMA/GSM (I do use it for international travel as well)

(note - I agree CDMA is lame, but vz has far better coverage where I use my phone than any of the others)

I usually go every two years. My philosophy is to not pay more than $50 for a new phone. My last one was a Razr, which I got for free about 18 months ago by ordering online. Just replaced it with this, which is a Verizon Branded phone (SMT5800), made by HTC.

It's alright. I didn't want a clunky blackberry, so this gives me a smartphone without a giant toast-like unit to talk into.

I've had about 4 phones during the last 2 years.  I now have the Verizon Voyager, which isnt too bad just a little bigger than I'd like it to be.

I've had 6 phones in the past 2 years. Just recently had a Krzr but snapped it in half during one of my temper tantrums. I said screw it and bought a $20 phone from wal mart and it works just as well.

This year alone I am on my 4th phone....

1st one I got free when I signed up: 1.5year (no sound) RIP: January08

Hand-me-down from hubby when he got a crackberry: 3 months (blank screen failure) RIP: Feb 08

Hand-me-down from sister: 1 month  (lost it at Krogers in Walnut Hills, cancel! cancel! immediately!) RIP: April 08

Latest phone: Samsung blackjack.  Only learned one feature so far: camera phone

I have always had great luck with phones.  I usually replace them every two years without any problems.  However, this year seems to be an exception.

I started out the year with an LG Chocolate that got possessed and I had to toss it.

I replaced that with another chocolate, and had the heat censor die after four months.

About two months ago I got an LG VX8300 which is a great phone, but the screen is starting to mess up on it.

Im pretty careful, but being a neat freak I've packed away electronics and forgotten about them.

I once sat my phone on top of a taxi for a second, just to get stuff out.  I closed the door and as I about to grab the phone, the taxi took off.  The phone died a painful death on Sixth Avenue...run over by 100 vehicles.

I always leave my blackberry somewhere.  My shady assistant got me a string, like those childrens gloves, so I wouldnt leave it in someones office.  Now it just sits in the charger.

I end up replacing mine about every 3-4 years.  I think I have dropped my current Nokia 6230 a few too many times and it is time to replace it, but haven't really seen one that I like considerably better.  I know everyone is all about the iPhone, but I've had such great experiences with Nokia phones that I don't plan to change.  Also, I've thought about lowering my plan, but figured it is worth sticking with my current plan of unlimited anytime minutes for about $45/month (which if I were to sign up for that plan today, it would be $100/month.)  Although Cincinnati Bell Wireless doesn't require a contract, I've been very happy and have no plans to change providers and will probable stick with my current phone a little longer.

My Razr phone did pretty well despite some spills.  The thing that malfunctioned was the keypad once, but it was replaced at my Verizon store free.  That's about it, usually I get a new phone every two years.

I know some people with the iPhone who have already dropped it several times (one who was on a bike) and their phones were fine, no damage.  Apple products (see my apple thread here from awhile ago) have drastically improved in their durability since the early iPod days where you might as well have been dropping expensive china.

On avg about every 4 months.

Well, the good news is that the verizon store didn't even ask where I bought the phone, they just flat out replaced it.  Nothing like walking out of the store with a nice working phone, no questions asked.  (esp. since I wasn't looking forward to any kind of a new contract or spending several hundred dollars on a replacement)
