So ... many ... towers!

Yet...so...many...swamps!

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

And someday, the towers will sink into the swamps.

That first pic makes Miami look like a South American city (which it kind of is, but still).  I might be heading down to South Florida in a month or two...I can't wait for the unbearable heat, bugs, and muggy weather.

^ And not just from above!  8-)  It's only May and it was a super muggy 96 degrees today. Oh the joys of SF.

I flew in to Ft Laud. last year and found it very interesting how, from the air you could make out Everglades Park boundary's very well (I guess it was the park or urban boundary's).

Great shots though.

Parts of South Florida are really become very urban, and dense. They also are developing a good mass transit system. It to bad downtown Miami's street life doesn't equal it huge skyline.

I heard it was because all those high rise towers are basically empty.

I thought Miami was really interesting, mostly because it's so much different from the midwest. I didn't pay much attention to the street life and this was before they built too many high rises but I enjoyed the exotic atmosphere.

That first photo is pretty amazing - I stayed downtown in 1990 and it probably has 3 times the number of high rises now.  I have not really seen it up close recently as we pretty much go straight to South Beach when we visit.

I love all of these aerial photos by the way.

I call it vertical sprawl (see Dubai).

"Downtown" South Florida is Miami Beach not Downtown Miami. Lots of street life pretty much 24-7 with the clubs closing at 5 AM. Because of tourism a lot of Florida communities tend to have street life near their beaches vs. the traditional downtown setting.

CSI: Miami!

^Thanks! Mystery solved.

While some of the resort beach areas might meet this descriptions, many areas have become major pedestrian/mass transit, dense areas. Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Kendall, Miami Beach, and downtown Fort Lauderdale. Calling it all vertical sprawl is really missing the mark for a lot of areas. Outside of Chicago there are no cities in the midwest that can compare to some of these areas for density, pedestrian access and mass transit.
