Posted May 18, 200817 yr We are family of four, looking for a place to live, not to far(10-15 minutes is ok) from Case/CWRU with a good neighbourhood and excellent school for our 2 children who will be in elementary school. Can somebody tell us what area to avoid and which area/suburbs are safe & have great schools? Also...we'll welcome any information about small single family house (or townhouse )for rent, for 1200 or less in that area thanks before
May 18, 200817 yr Suburban neighborhoods within 10-15 minutes pretty of CWRU well limits you to Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights, and possibly University Heights. There are neighborhoods within these suburbs, with the walkable shopping districts being Coventry, Cedar-Fairmount and Cedar-Lee in Cleveland Heights, plus the Severance Town Center on Mayfield. There's Chagrin-Lee and Warrensville-Chagrin in Shaker Heights. And there's several shopping areas at the edge of University Heights -- Cedar Center at Warrensville and Cedar (Whole Foods Market, etc), and Legacy Village at Cedar and Richmond. However, if you're willing to consider the city and can get your children into the Montessori School at Holy Rosary Church (see http://www.montessori-holyrosary.org/) then Little Italy might be worth considering too considering how close it is. It's an amazing, historic neighborhood. More quality schools are coming to this area of Cleveland, including a University Circle Montessori school. The area is already home to the Cleveland School of the Arts, a high school in the city's schools which attracts suburban students. Another option is the Shaker Square area. This Cleveland neighborhood is actually part of the well-regarded Shaker Heights school district. While the immediate Shaker Square area is mid- and high-rise apartments and condos, look for single-family houses north and east of the square. May 18, 200817 yr Cleveland Magazine does a suburb rating each year. Although the methodology and ranking can be debated depending on what you feel is particularly important and the report generally does not favor suburbs closer to the city, it does gather a lot of data from the various suburbs and puts it in one place. It is available online for $15 or you might be able to find a back print copy. http://www.clevelandmagazine.com/suburbs
May 18, 200817 yr Orange, Solon, and Beachwood on the Eastside. Avon, Westlake, and Rocky River on the West.
May 18, 200817 yr ^^ All those burbs are not even close to 15 min from CWRU with the possible exception of Beachwood. As KJP said her options will be limited by the 15 min criteria.
May 18, 200817 yr thank guys.... I think we may consider 15-20 minutes drive if that means better place & school What do you think about Lyndhurst and Mayfield heights? thanks
May 18, 200817 yr sunflower, it might be helpful to give us a little more perspective - what area are you moving from? It seems like we're better able to find a match when we know a little about where you're from. If there's a neighborhood/suburb that you prefer/like where you are now, that would help us steer you into something you'll likely be comfortable with. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 18, 200817 yr Hi Mayday, thank you for asking, we are new to the area, will move from Massachusetts, dont know much, except read somewhere that Beachwood, Lyndhurst & Mayfield hts schools are not bad
May 18, 200817 yr Caution- this topic is a minefield of personal opinions. But I would think Shaker Heights seems to fit perfectly (and you are likely to hear this from many people at University Circle institutions). Here's a recent article about Shaker's success producing National Merit Scholars: http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1210581026265890.xml&coll=2
May 19, 200817 yr Where in Massachusetts are you coming from? Many of us are familiar with various towns and cities in Mass. If you tell us what you liked there, we might be able to suggest a comparable neighborhood here. May 19, 200817 yr SF, I moved from Cambridge and find Shaker Heights TOO suburban for what I was used to. Cleveland Heights, Lakewood and Ohio City are far closer to what I prefer. That said, I don't have kids, so SH could be better for that. Beachwood and further out feels like one big traffic jam to me.
May 19, 200817 yr Thank you guys...you are awesome!! still accepting informations Btw we are now live in a small town in western mass which is incomparable to cleveland, but once live in Mpls. Can somebody compare Cleveland with Mpls-St Paul? I think Roseville MN is one suburb in my mind, thats not too far from everywhere & good enough for family Good school & safe neighbour'd are more important to us than the distance to restaurants/cafe etc
May 19, 200817 yr I'll let someone else familiar with Minneapolis/Roseville offer comparisons. But I wanted to ask if you live in Pittsfield? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
