Posted May 18, 200817 yr Unless someone expresses interest or would like to pitch a date, the UO Bicycle Riding (and Urban Exploration) Group is temporarily on hold. I may organize one last group ride before this fall, but it isn't an UO group ride without UO folks participating! Stay tuned.
May 20, 200817 yr I won't be able to attend any of these, but if someone can remember - please take photos! :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 21, 200817 yr I'll be there... I think I am going to ride down from O.B. if anyone wants to join...
May 28, 200817 yr Again, please post if you'll be joining. That way, we can wait up for you if you're running late. Also, I'll be sending my cell number to the folks who post so we can let you know where we are.
May 31, 200817 yr Jar3232, X, and I went on the first UO Bicycle Group Ride this morning. Here's a quick summary of what transpired: - We met up at OCBC, tried to fix a flat that I got, but then broke off and went to get it fixed at Fridrich's. The OCBC folks didn't seem to want to help out, and were more eager to get rolling to the Stockyards neighborhood. - After about fifteen or so minutes at Fridrich's, we made our way down to Detroit with Edgwater Park at West Boulevard our destination. We went around Edgewater, stopped a few locations for sightseeing and photos, then rolled up West 65th. - We biked down Bridge to the West Side Market Cafe, had lunch, and hung out for a bit. X went on his way Jar3232 and I went on ours back to Old Brooklyn via Tremont. Jar and I ended up doing about 20 miles. - It was a beautiful day for biking, except that it was a bit humid from the storms. Excellent time. We'll shoot for another ride during the week after work. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know and I'll try to work something out. We definitely want more people to do urban exploring with us next time.
June 1, 200817 yr I'm still new to everyone on these forums and don't really know many of you, but this sounds exciting and I'm sure I'll be up for it in the future!
June 1, 200817 yr Aw, I forgot all about this! I wouldn't have been able to go anyway since I was backed up with work and didn't have time to spare this weekend. Once I make a dent in the backlog in the coming weeks, I should be able go. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 1, 200817 yr Sounds like good times! I'd like to see something organized for Cinci. A grand tour of DT or one of the neighborhoods... What bikes did you ride -- fixed or road?
June 1, 200817 yr After work on a weekday would work better for me, plus once it starts getting hot, I prefer to bike after the sun is down a bit (my pasty white Irish skin doesn't do sun). Maybe we could meet in OC and stop for smoothies at Johnnie Mango afterwards...mmmm...pina colada....
June 1, 200817 yr I'm aiming to take a longer ride this Thursday beginning around 6pm, probably from Old Brooklyn to Brothers Lounge via Ohio City. If anyone would like to join either starting at Old Brooklyn, along the way, or just meet up for food/drink at Brothers, let me know. I may also try to organize a bike tour of Old Brooklyn sometime in June, if there is interest. Again, let me know!
June 16, 200817 yr Is anyone interested in possibly doing a group ride Friday, June 28, say 6-6:30pm?
June 23, 200816 yr Weather-permitting, the second UO Bicycle Riding Group event will take place Friday, June 27 at 6pm. We'll start in Old Brooklyn near Steelyard at 6pm and will go "neighborhooding" on the West Side of Cleveland or Downtown. We'll pick a destination (like a development area or the waterfront) and an interesting route with plenty of sights along the way, then stop someplace for food and beer on the way back. Feel free to provide your suggestions, but if not, I'll have a tentative route later in the week. If you'd like the bike brigade to swing by and pick you up or would like to join up later, post here and we'll make arrangements. Of course, you can do the full ride or just part of it. Hopefully some non-bicycling UO folks want to meet up with us for a drink! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here or send me a PM. Hope you can join us!
June 23, 200816 yr I'd like to do this, but I get out of work in Valley View at 6:00, so I'd probably have to meet up somewhere. (FYI, Friday is June 27, not 28.)
June 23, 200816 yr Brian and I (newly moved to Cleveland) would like to meet you for a drink later as we aren't bike riders. Just let us know time and place.
June 24, 200816 yr ^ Great! Come on, UO community...let's welcome Justine and Brian in style. Ink's supposed to be in town, too, so maybe we can get him to come out as well. I'm thinking Brothers Lounge as a place to meet up, say 8pm? Hopefully we'll get some UO folks who don't bike to join up with us. Oompa, if you're north or west of Old Brooklyn, we might be able to push back our original leaving time and swing by wherever you'd like to meet the bike brigade. Maybe that will give you some extra time? I have at least one other person confirmed for the ride. Let's see some more!
June 25, 200816 yr I'd be up for it - but not sure if how I feel about riding my bike back post 9pm from Brothers Lounge back to Old Brooklyn...I'll let you know or maybe i'll just break off early.
June 25, 200816 yr ^ Good to have you on board, lewarctj. Any other ideas for locations to meet up (anyone)?
June 25, 200816 yr What if we began and ended at Brothers? That way if people don't feel comfortable riding after dark, they can park there and drive home.
June 25, 200816 yr ^ That's a great idea. I'll probably still bike from Old Brooklyn, but I can handle the ride there, the UO Bicycle Tour, and the trip home. I'll be coming out with a non-UO guy that's very pro-Cleveland and works in historic preservation. So we have Oompa, lewarctj (maybe), cd-cleve, and one more person so far for the ride. And Justine and Brian will be meeting up with us after the ride. Let's see some more people join us, or else I'm going to start calling folks out. And if anyone wants to bring a friend, feel free. The more, the merrier as long as they can keep good pace and are just a bit comfortable riding on the road (it's much, much easier in groups).
June 25, 200816 yr Ink's supposed to be in town, too, so maybe we can get him to come out as well. I'd like to, but I'll be at Progressive Field about that time.
June 25, 200816 yr Thanks, everyone. This sounds like it will be a blast. Let's officially push the meeting time to 6:30pm to accommodate everyone a little better. I'll have a solidified plan for a destination and route plus a time for any UO folks who would like to come up for food or a beer to meet us either this evening or tomorrow afternoon. How about some more people join us?
June 26, 200816 yr Sounds good. Just FYI, be careful where you park around there, some places are fine, others they will definitely tow. I know Pizza Hut tows. There's a map here showing where you can park: http://www.brotherslounge.com/calendar.php I believe it's also posted on their front door. Maybe we should exchange a few cell phone numbers via PM in case anyone is running late, gets lost, whatever.
June 26, 200816 yr There's a 50% chance of rain, namely t-storms, for Friday evening. In case of inclement weather, would you all like to just meet at Brothers at 6:30pm or 7-something for food and/or drink? Oompa and Justine, I'll send you my cell number via PM. I have numbers for lewarctj and jar3232. Let's meet at Brothers at 6:30pm. Let's plan on touring the Edgewater neighborhood a bit, maybe hit Edgewater Park along the way and possibly Whiskey Island, then find a scenic route back to Brothers. Sounds to be about a ten-mile ride. We'll try to get back to meet Justine and Brian and hopefully some other UO folks around 8-8:30pm. My non-UO friend and I will probably still bike to Brothers from Old Brooklyn via Denison and West 65th. We'll probably leave around 5:30pm. So if anyone wants join us for that portion of the ride, just let me know. Sound good? Any last-minute takers? Looking forward to hanging with all of you!
June 27, 200816 yr We will be riding the rapid so won't need to worry about parking. There's a stop at 117th or you can get off at 98th and take the Detroit Ave. bus which runs very frequently (about every 20 minutes at night).
June 27, 200816 yr Who wants to come out for a drink with us? Any last minute takers? Weather.com says that there's only a 20% chance of rain around 7pm, so I think we'll end up having a nice day for a ride.
June 28, 200816 yr Thanks to Oompa and Jar3232 for coming out on the ride and Justine and Brian for meeting up with us at Brothers Lounge. Despite a little rain, we toured the Edgewater neighborhood, went through Edgewater Park, then hit Whiskey Island. After a stop, we meandered back through Detroit Shoreway and Cudell. All six of us hung out at Brothers, got food and drinks, and had some great conversations. In all, Jar, our non-UO friend JP, and I biked 27.5 miles! Maybe we'll aim for another ride in a couple of weeks.
June 30, 200816 yr We had fun and enjoyed meeting all of you hardy bikers! It's great to talk to people who appreciate city life and patronize independent businesses. Thanks for putting it all together, Jeff.
July 10, 200816 yr How about another ride soon? I'm proposing a couple of dates: Thursday, July 17 - 6:30pm Friday, July 18 - 6:30pm Saturday, July 26 - 10:30am Give me feedback on which would work best for you. I'm thinking we can do a tour of the Industrial Valley both east and west of the Cuyahoga. It's a quiet, scenic route, and you can see my photos of it here, here, and here.
July 16, 200816 yr X, I'm down for Thursday. Want to make it official? Sorry, I just found out I have family coming to town. I will be having dinner with them instead.
July 17, 200816 yr So far, we tentatively have Jar3232, FrqntFlyr, cd-cleveland, and possibly lewarctj. Anyone else want to come out for a ride? Guv? Jamiec? KJP? MapBoy? I'm thinking we could potentially pay a visit to Gordon Park via the Lakefront Bikeway. If we want to make the route longer, we can take MLK to get to Euclid and use the bike lanes.
July 18, 200816 yr Thanks to FrqntFlyr and Jar3232 for coming out for the third UO ride! We met up at Settlers Landing and went to Voinovich Park to try to check out the Mountain Dew tour. The three of us took St. Clair down to East 72nd Street, and FrqntFlyr gave us a bit of a neighborhood tour. We then hit Cleveland Lakefront Park, biked down MLK, then came back down Euclid Avenue. We all had an excellent time talking Cleveland and getting to know each other along the way. I'll try to organize a few more rides before the end of the summer, but would really like more participation! I think X, Oompa, lewarctj, FrqntFlyr, and Jar3232 would all say that they enjoyed the ride and company. Hope to see more of you UO folks out next time. That being said, let's tentatively do that bad-ass ride of the Industrial Valley in two weeks. How's Thursday, July 31st sound?
August 20, 200816 yr I'd like to try to get some folks out on one last ride for the season. I anticipate doing the Industrial Valley, both east and west sides with a small group. I've ridden it numerous times, and the scenery is pretty spectacular. It's quiet and serene down there as well. If you're interested, please post here. We'll try to figure out a day and time to make it happen. Maybe we can also select a location in Tremont where we can meet up with non-bikers from UO like we did at Brothers Lounge. But if you're ever up for an impromptu ride and would like to join me in exploring, just drop me a PM. I (and oftentimes others) usually try to head out either a Thursday or Friday after work for about 20 miles and a stop for food/drink along the way. I/We certainly don't mind the company if you like exploring and can keep decent pace.
September 15, 200816 yr Anyone still interested in another ride? I finally got myself a new bike (going to try to not have this one stolen like my last two). I used to ride the industrial valley all the time when I lived in Tremont....actually used to ride through the old warehouses that were demolished for Steelyard Commons. That was quite surreal going through them. There were three in a row, each about the size of a football field and you could just roll through from one to the next. The lights were on for some reason I could never figure out. I kept expecting someone to jump out in front of me, but I never saw a soul while I was there. Anyway, I would definitely be up for a group ride sometime before the weather turns.
September 15, 200816 yr The Ohio City Bike Co-op is a great place to find used, refurbished bikes. http://www.ohiocitycycles.org Really cool resource.
